After a fisheries biologist visually identified the species and weight was verified with certified scales, a small fin clip was sent for genetic testing to confirm that the fish was not a hybrid. The previous state record for a black crappie was 4 pounds, 4 ounces caught in Brown’s Creek Lake by Clyde Freeman 33 years ago. Ferguson’s catch also would qualify as the new International Game Fish Association (IGFA) world record for black crappie, besting the current record by 7.68 ounces. The current record was caught from a private lake in Missouri by John Horstman in 2006. Ferguson has indicated that he plans to apply with the IGFA for the new world record. ---TWRA--- NOW! Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander is one of the co-sponsors of the bipartisan legislation that recommends funding for those fish and wildlife species of greatest conservation need across the country. “Senator Alexander has championed several wild- life-related issues specific to Tennessee and his lead- ership on this national issue will be instrumental,” said Ed Carter, executive director of the Tennessee Wildlife * Fishing Equipment Resources Agency. “His longtime personal interest in * Tackle wildlife and the outdoors allows a unique personal con- * Live Bait nection as an advocate for this critical legislation.” * Open Mon - Sat The legislation recommends that Congress au- thorize $1.3 billion annually from energy development 423-365-2266 on federal lands and waters to the existing Wildlife Con- servation Restoration Program to conserve the full ar- 290 Whites Creek Road ray of fish and wildlife. This solution, proposed initially Spring City, TN 37381 by leaders of the energy, outdoor recreation retail, man- ufacturing, and automotive sectors and well as sports- men’s/women’s and other conservation groups is complementary to existing natural resource conservation and outdoor recreation programs. It will not require taxpayers or businesses to pay more, but instead allows all Americans to become investors in fish and wildlife conservation. The Senate bill complements the House version introduced in December 2017 which has gained strong, biparti- san co-sponsorship due to its innovative approach to solving America’s wildlife crisis, with the current list of co-sponsors growing to more than 75 members. Tennessee has one of the most diverse populations of fish and wildlife in the country,” said Pandy Upchurch, as- sistant chief for the TWRA Biodiversity Division. “While some of our species are thriving, others are continuing to face increasing challenges.” There are 1,499 species in Tennessee considered to be species of greatest conservation need. There are 79 animals listed as threatened or endangered. As of July 1, a requirement similar to the “Move Over” law on land will go into effect. As written, the new law will require boaters to slow to no wake speed within 100 feet of a law enforcement vessel that is displaying flashing blue lights. Also effective July 1, there will no longer be an exemption from boating education for renters of watercraft. Winter normal elevation: 736.0 feet. Current elevation: 741.19 feet. The water surface temperature is mid 80’s. Largemouth Bass: Humps, ledges, and points are the locations targeted the most in primary areas. Use the arsenal typically used in the summer. Smallmouth Bass: Target rocky areas on the main lake with small profile lures. Crappie: Target deep brush or docks in or close to large water while using minnows or jigs. Fish at night near lights while using minnows or jigs to increase comfort and possibly the number of fish caught. Catfish: Use meaty baits in the main channel. Current will increase the odds of catching fish. Striped bass: Some fish are being caught in the Clinch River and upper Tennessee River while using shad. The number of fish being caught seems lower than in previous years. Some anglers speculate that increased rain may have kept the fish from congregating as they normally do. Creel clerk Danny Stone met a fine young man from Memphis that makes several fish- ing trips to the Caney each year. He caught a nice brown trout! They're biting.
