OFFICERS’ MANUAL of the CATHOLIC WAR VETERANS of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA “FOR GOD . FOR COUNTRY . FOR HOME” Revised January 1997 CHARTERED BY CONGRESS 17 AUGUST 1984 2 PREFACE. You learn to lead only by leading. In Catholic War Veteran units throughout the United States, there are many diversified types of activity in which members serve as leaders. This is the firing line. Leadership becomes most effective when it is motivated by an inspiring ideal and when it acts on good principles of organization and authority. The adequate management of the affairs and activities of the organization depends on a number of common principles of organization and authority. To adhere to these principles is to assure efficient, successful administration. To acquire knowledge of good principles of organization and authority and to apply them wisely to particular conditions and situations is the obligation of all officers in their responsibility to the membership and anyone whom they represent and serve. The purpose of this Officers’ Manual is to present a number of sound principles and methods of organization and command, which it is hoped will assist officers to develop leadership. Fundamentally, the strength of your leadership will lie: 1. In the understanding of the ideals and ideas, the purpose and procedure of Catholic War Veterans, and 2. In the cooperation with the programs of all higher echelons. Ultimately, one can only learn to lead by leading. This Officers’ Manual is meant as a guide, use it! 4 PRINCIPLES OF ORGANIZATION Desirable Qualities The Catholic War Veterans of the United States of America is a living thing.

The Villa Magazine b Spring 2017 b I VILLA MARIA ACADEMY Board of Trustees, 2016-2017 Dear Villa family, ooking out over white fields to the white-capped bay, it seems winter refuses to surrender to spring this year. But it will. It’s inevitable. I’ve already seen the blooms on Sr. Sally Norcross, CND Lthe now-frozen trees and the crocuses under the snow. I can feel that springtime energy Sr. Teresa Barton, CND getting ready to break out in a riot of blooms and so many different shades of green. In the Mr. Paul Bossidy words of the poet Percy Shelly, “If winter comes, can spring be far behind?” Mrs. Rose Burkhart The years since the economic crisis of 2008 have been years of consolidation; not just for the Sr. Marion Andreykovic, CND Villa but for Catholic schools across the nation. Gradually declining enrollment necessitated Ms. Helen Cannistraci creative thinking. Our winter gave us time to refine our mission to better support the reality of today’s families and respond to the needs of today’s students. Working together with Mrs. Roberta Garland faculty and trustees, we maintained our essential mission in leaner times, and learned how Sr. Eileen Good, CND to better communicate our good news to a wider community. Through it all, we continued Mrs. Gheri Kaufman to deliver the time-honored Villa Mrs. Catherine Leon education, achieving the highest standardized scores and developing Mr. James J. • Vermeer in the Age of the Digital Reproduction and Virtual
VERMEER IN THE AGE OF THE DIGITAL REPRODUCTION AND VIRTUAL COMMUNICATION MIRIAM DE PAIVA VIEIRA Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais ABSTRACT: The twentieth century was responsible for the revival of the visual arts, lending techniques to literature, in particular, after the advent of cinema. This visual revival is illustrated by the intersemiotic translations of Girl with a Pearl Earring: a recent low-budget movie was responsible for the revival of ordinary public interest in an art masterpiece from the seventeenth century. However, it was the book about the portrait that catalyzed this process of rejuvenation by verbalizing the portrait and inspiring the cinematographic adaptation, thereby creating the intersemiotic web. In this media-saturated environment we now live in, not only do books inspire movie adaptations, but movies inspire literary works; adaptations of screenplays are published; movies are adapted into musicals, television shows and even videogames. For James Naremore, every form of retelling should be added to the “study of adaptation in the age of the mechanical reproduction and electronic communication” (NAREMORE, 2000: 12-15), long previewed in Walter Benjamin’s milestone article (1936). Nowadays, the celebrated expression could be changed to the age of the digital reproduction and virtual communication, since new technologies and the use of new media have been changing the relations between, and within, the arts. The objective of this essay is to explore Vermeer’s influence on contemporary art and media production, with focus on the collection of portraits from the book entitled Domestic Landscapes (2007) by the Dutch photographer Bert Teunissen, confirming the study of recycling within a general theory of repetition proposed by James Naremore, under the light of intermediality.

  • Title: the Distribution of an Illustrated Timeline Wall Chart and Teacher's Guide of 20Fh Century Physics
REPORT NSF GRANT #PHY-98143318 Title: The Distribution of an Illustrated Timeline Wall Chart and Teacher’s Guide of 20fhCentury Physics DOE Patent Clearance Granted December 26,2000 Principal Investigator, Brian Schwartz, The American Physical Society 1 Physics Ellipse College Park, MD 20740 301-209-3223 [email protected] BACKGROUND The American Physi a1 Society s part of its centennial celebration in March of 1999 decided to develop a timeline wall chart on the history of 20thcentury physics. This resulted in eleven consecutive posters, which when mounted side by side, create a %foot mural. The timeline exhibits and describes the millstones of physics in images and words. The timeline functions as a chronology, a work of art, a permanent open textbook, and a gigantic photo album covering a hundred years in the life of the community of physicists and the existence of the American Physical Society . Each of the eleven posters begins with a brief essay that places a major scientific achievement of the decade in its historical context. Large portraits of the essays’ subjects include youthful photographs of Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, and Richard Feynman among others, to help put a face on science. Below the essays, a total of over 130 individual discoveries and inventions, explained in dated text boxes with accompanying images, form the backbone of the timeline. For ease of comprehension, this wealth of material is organized into five color- coded story lines the stretch horizontally across the hundred years of the 20th century. The five story lines are: Cosmic Scale, relate the story of astrophysics and cosmology; Human Scale, refers to the physics of the more familiar distances from the global to the microscopic; Atomic Scale, focuses on the submicroscopic This report was prepared as an account of work sponsored by an agency of the United States Government.
