1 1. Three Key Principles for Effective Fundraising

HAVE MULTIPLE SOURCES OF FUNDING AND HAVE A PLAN THAT WORKS FOR YOU.

Review this manual for ideas and make a BIG list of opportunities. Brainstorm with your family, friends and Scout Group. Once you have a big list, you can prioritize which activities will get you the most support (the best return for the time invested) and make a plan to achieve your FUNdraising goal.

WORK YOUR PLAN, EVERY DAY.

Set a goal to make contact with at least one of your sources every day (whether it’s a phone call, a knock on the door, an email, or other way to ask for support).

WORK WITH ALL YOUR TEAMS.

You have many people to lean on in : your family, friends, your Scout Troop or Venturer Company, and both your Area and your Council, just to name a few. Meet with all of them and ask for their help AND ideas.

Remember: The more people you tell about your amazing goal, the more support you will receive!

2 2. Fundraising Fundamentals at the Group/Area Level – Helping you Prepare

There are many steps that will get you from beginning Some items to consider: to end but the first thing you need to do is prepare. SAMPLE EMAIL TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS

From: Natalie Smith Sent: December-17-13 1:53 PM To: Shirley Smith; Valerie Smith; Sterling Smith; Lorelei Smith; Grandma Smith Subject: Support my Scouting Group for World Jamboree, West Virginia 2019

Hello Everyone,

Many of you may know that I am getting very excited about my upcoming participation in the 24th in Vest Virginia in July of 2019. This is the first ever North American Jamboree and is co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the USA. This event is going to be attended by more than 40,000 Scouts from 161 countries.

If any of you have ever participated in an event like this, you will know that it will be the experience of a lifetime. My Jamboree experience will begin in Washington, DC where all of the participants from Canada will meet-up at the University of Maryland to explore Washington and get to know each other for 4 days. Then we will leave together for the Summit Bechtel Scout Reserve, which is an amazing High Adventure Camp in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of West Virginia. We will be camping in West Virginia for 11 days of incredible programming and a unique Scouting cultural exchange that can only be experienced at a World Jamboree. I have heard that the cultural experience at a World Jamboree is second to none and the languages and skill sets learned, along with the friendships I will make, will be with me for the rest of my life.

To help support my trip, I hope that you will consider making a charitable donation online at: https://www.canadahelps.org/CharityProfilePage

I know that this experience will be far better than any gift I could ever receive. Donations over $20 to my Scouting Group, through this secure online portal, are tax deductible and your official tax receipt will be sent directly from Scouts Canada. If you have any questions, you can feel free to contact me, or Scouts Canada directly: 613-224-5134 ext. 298.

8 6. Obtaining Support from Service Clubs

One way that your group can obtain support for the World Jamboree is through funding from Service Clubs. There are service clubs that provide funding to youth programs all over Canada. Below are some links that we think will be helpful in obtaining funding in your community. Successful support from Service Clubs may come from some of these tips: a) Write them a letter asking for support (see example) b) Offer to conduct a presentation with youth and leaders in attendance c) Offer to conduct a follow up from the Jamboree experience in the form of a presentation with photos and stories of the life changing event in which you participated d) Ask if anyone in the room was previously involved in Scouting and ask them to share their memories e) Ask everyone to join in on a popular Scouting song to get people involved from the beginning and to create warm memories and/or support for the program f) Ensure that you have information to hand out about your experience and come prepared with statistics of how many are attending, how much the experience will cost, what ceremonies and activities you will participate in, how the experience will change lives, and any more information you think is important.

RE: World Scout Jamboree 2019 – Request for Support

Dear Mr./Ms. CONTACT LAST NAME;

We are writing to you today to express interest in delivering a presentation to the CLUB NAME of YOUR TOWN about the upcoming World Jamboree taking place in West Virginia in July & August of 2019. We will be participating in the first ever North American Jamboree, which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the USA.

The local YOUR TOWN Scouts could not be more excited about the opportunity and would like to share with you what the experience will mean to them. As you can likely relate, many Canadians over the years have been Scouts in their past. It is our guess that many of your local Rotary members have extremely positive memories about their experiences in the Scouting Movement and would love to hear from our youth as they share photos, stories and of course, their own experiences in our local YOUR TOWN group.

In YOUR TOWN, there are # youth and # adults planning on attending the 2019 World Jamboree. Our Jamboree experience will begin in Washington, DC with a 4 day Pre-Jamboree where we will meet all of the Canadian Participants – we are hoping for 2,000 Canadians to participate! From there, we will join 40,000+ participants at the Summit Bechtel Scout Reserve in the Blue Ridge Mountains of West Virginia for 11 days of incredible programming and a unique Scouting cultural exchange that can only be experienced at a World Jamboree. We have heard that the cultural experience at a World Jamboree is second to none; and the languages and skill sets learned, along with the friendships made, will remain with the youth for the rest of their lives. This particular Jamboree is set to have youth attending from over 161 countries. Our youth are working hard to get to the World Jamboree and have undertaken a multitude of fundraisers including Scout Popcorn, Bottle Drives and a FUNdraising dinner. Should you also choose to support our program, we would be extremely grateful.

If we could arrange it, our youth would love the opportunity to talk to you about the experiences we participate in, right here in YOUR TOWN and, the types of programming we will be experiencing at the World Jamboree. This way, if your local members have questions about Scouting or, the World Jamboree in 2019, we can answer them immediately. We would also be very happy to come out to a meeting following our return from West Virginia to share our stories, photos and special memories with all of you. We can assure you that these youth will learn so much from this experience that it is sure to change them forever.

Thank you in advance for your consideration. We look forward to your support on this initiative.

Sincerely;

Scouter Your Name Your Scout Group, Your Role (and proud parent of a youth attending the World Jamboree – if applicable)
