Pitt enjoyed a successful 2006-07 season as it set school records for consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (sixth) and consecutive 20-victory seasons (sixth). Pitt also advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the fourth time in the last six years and became the only Big East program to win at least 20 overall games (29) and 10 league games (12) in each of the last six seasons. Clockwise from top: Pitt hosted the popular ESPN GameDay broadcast at the Petersen Events Center prior to its game on Jan. 13 against Georgetown. Pitt honored its four seniors—Aaron Gray, Levon Kendall, Antonio Graves and Doyle Hudson—prior to the group’s final home game at the Petersen Events Center on Feb. 27, 2007. Posing with his parents Michael and Sandy Gray, Head Coach Jamie Dixon and Chancellor Mark Nordenberg, Aaron Gray received the Big East/ Aeropostale Student-Athlete of the Year Award. NEWSLETTER #65 - 2008-09 XAVIER CONDITIONING All summer long, we point towards one small test of conditioning that occurs the first Friday of the school year...the mile run. This mile will be the one and only time each year we run on a track. Based on their position, players are expected to meet a certain time for this mile. If they do not meet this time, they are expected to do two weeks of extra conditioning prior to the start of full team conditioning. We stress the importance of “ALL YEAR CONDITIONING”. The culture we have built does not allow for a player to view summer as “time off” or an opportunity to scale back. This test serves as the ultimate barometer of that. In the past four years of using this test, we have had no more than one player per year miss their time. The following are the times we point to for each position group: GUARDS - 5:25 FORWARDS - 5:40 POSTS - 6:00 Xavier University - Men's Basketball - 3800 Victory Parkway - Cintas Center - Cincinnati, OH 45207 - (513) 745-3417 - (887) WE ARE XU BASKETBALL THOUGHTS ALVIN GENTRY “Toughest thing in the NBA to guard is screen and flare with a good player. Pick and roll is more limited in today’s NBA. Set ballscreens with a shooter.” “In transition, players tend to run back into the lane on defense. It is important for guards to be more man conscious in transition – ‘stay attached to man’”. “Very difficult to trap pick-n-rolls, guards are too good off of the dribble, plus low post player “punches” in middle of lane under goal which means the rotations are difficult.” “Choose 2 or 3 things defensively and get good at them.” “The best defensive teams in the NBA defensively rebound, defend and are simple with their rotations (i.e.: Knicks, Heat), also very physical and consequently are in every game.” “Don’t let great players catch the ball.” JEFF VAN GUNDY “I didn’t like two-a-days.

  • Four of the Top Players in School History Are Depicted Here Including Charles Smith, Don Hennon, Billy Knight and Jerome Lane
Four of the top players in school history are depicted here including Charles Smith, Don Hennon, Billy Knight and Jerome Lane. Smith, Hennon and Knight are the three Pitt players to have their jerseys retired. All three have found success beyond basketball as Hennon became a medical doctor, Knight serves as General Manager for the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks and Smith, following a productive NBA career, is a successful businessman and chairman of the Charles D. Smith Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing a positive alternative for today’s youth. An NBA veteran, Lane is shown here throwing down his backboard shattering dunk against Providence on Jan. 25, 1988. “Send it in Jerome!” proclaimed ESPN broadcaster Bill Raftery minutes after Lane’s thunderous dunk prompted a 30-minute delay in the game. Pitt went on to claim a 90-56 victory, then went on to capture the 1987-88 Big East regular season title. The game is forever labeled as the “Night the House Came Down.” RECORDS & ACHIEVEMENTS NATIONAL HONORS Charles Smith, H.M., 1987-88 BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME The Sporting News Naismith Memorial Basketball Brandin Knight, 2ndTeam, 2001-02 Hall of Fame Henry Clifford “Doc” Carlson, M.D., Scripps Howard News Service Elected, 1959 Charles Smith, 1st Team, 1987-88 Charley Hyatt, Elected, 1959 USBWA All-America Helms Athletic Foundation Hall of Jerome Lane, 2nd Team, 1987-88 Fame Henry Clifford “Doc” Carlson, M.D. NABC All-America Don Hennon, Inducted, 1970 Don Hennon, 2nd Team, 1957-58 Charley Hyatt Don Hennon, 2nd Team, 1958-59 Billy Knight,

  • 2008-09 John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 Candidates Announced Today
FOR RELEASE November 7, 2008 CONTACT: Linda Reid, LRPR Christin Maxwell (310) 291-9205 (213) 630-5231 [email protected] [email protected] 2008-09 JOHN R. WOODEN AWARD PRESEASON TOP 50 CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED TODAY ’08 Winner Hansbrough; All-Americans Curry, Harangody Among the Candidates Los Angeles (November 7, 2008)— The 2008-09 preseason candidates for the John R. Wooden Award All-American Team and Player of the Year trophy were announced today by Richard “Duke” Llewellyn, Wooden Award Chairman and founder. The list is composed of 50 student athletes who, based on last year’s individual performance and team records, are the early frontrunners for college basketball’s most prestigious honor. Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina, last year’s Wooden Award winner, returns to Chapel Hill for his final collegiate season and has a chance to become only the second repeat men’s Wooden Award winner. Ralph Sampson of Virginia won the Award twice, in 1982 and 1983. Other returning Wooden All-Americans include Notre Dame forward Luke Harangody and Davidson guard Stephen Curry. Hansbrough led the ACC in scoring at 22.6 ppg as a junior, while shooting an impressive 54% from the field and 80.6% from the free throw line. Known to Tarheel fans as "Psycho T," Hansbrough was the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the year in leading UNC to a school-record 36 wins and its 17th Final Four. In putting Davidson front and center on the national scene, Curry averaged more than 25 ppg as a junior and set an NCAA record with 162 three-pointers on the season.
