News and Information Letter for Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly August/September ‘21

I hope you have already spotted the changed front page. The Coronavirus restrictions black box has gone - it has been there since the April 2020 Issue. Fingers crossed that it doesn’t ever return! Returning to our meetings is not quite so straightforward. Both branches have articles outlining their plans and readers from areas covered by Mid Cornwall Branch also have a questionnaire. The back page is now a guide to activities. It will be more important than before to contact organsers in advance if you plan to attend any September meetings. The website calendar should have the most up-to-date information. Elsewhere in the issue there are details of courses both in the community and online. The Medicine Chest has some interesting news regarding Parkinson’s Nurses in Treliske Hospital. There are two more quizzes to tax your brains and even a suggestion of Christmas. Perhaps now is the time to enjoy the sunshine and have a good read of your Newsletter, Happy Reading!

Looking Ahead It has been a long time since we have been able to meet up and the Committee have now had their first meeting in person. Although no date can yet be given to re-start our various group meetings, please be assured that enquiries have started and dates will be given as soon as possible when everyone will feel safe getting together again.

Sing for Fun at Home Thank you for your feedback on summer singing. Gail and I have come up with a schedule which gives space for some holiday but keeps continuity. We are very lucky that Gail is happy to step in again, thank you Gail! Gail will lead the first three weeks of August and I will return in the first week of September. Full details are on the website calendar. It will be great to keep the singing, chat and fun going over the summer. Kelsey Michael

To Open or Not to Open? That is the Question (Sorry Shakespeare)

You may have noticed that a little thing called a pandemic prevented the Mid Cornwall Branch (and the rest of the country) opening the doors to our Face to Face monthly meetings (Drop-Ins). Parkinson’s UK has been advising group leaders on the safety standards required to make any such activities possible.

So, while the whole country is crystal ball gazing about third waves, new variants, mask wearing or not mask wearing etc we are trying to judge when we volunteers would be able to reinstate Drop-ins and at which venues. Please remember though, we on the committee and the lead volunteers have also been through Covid and may not be ready to ‘lead’ for a while.

As I write, some early decisions are being made. It is certain that: • Not all venues will reopen straight away in September even if we get the all clear from Parkinson’s UK. • Some meetings will change venues. • Some meetings will be shorter. • Some meetings may take place at a different time of day. • We shall need more volunteers to help with some groups. A questionnaire has been formulated and included in the Mid Cornwall newsletters so that we can judge what you would like to see at future Drop-ins. Please take some time to reply. The newsletter comes out every two months. If we open up between editions, you might miss out so we need your permission to contact you when it happens.

If you live in the Liskeard, Torpoint, Wadebridge, Newquay and Launceston areas and the East of the county, ring Sue Whipps and let her know you would like to hear from her when the drop-ins open up. 01503 262166 (It may be an answer machine message so leave your name and phone number to get on her list.) 4

If you live in the St Austell, Summercourt, or Fowey areas, phone Nick on 01726 61502. If there is a call minder service in operation, please state your name and telephone number. For Truro and on down to Redruth, phone Rowena on 07813 548767 For now, Kelsey’s singing group and the PD Active group will continue to operate by Zoom but again, this is subject to change if we begin meet in person

You are welcome to any Drop-In, regardless of where you live, so as long as one of us has your telephone number we can keep you informed when we open.

Watch this space Sue Whipps

PDActive Becky, of Neuro Physio Practice, will restart the PDActive online for 10 weeks towards the end of September for all existing participants. If anyone new wishes to join this group on Zoom, they are very welcome and they need to contact Becky on 01326 561012 or email [email protected] .

Promas Caring for People Cornwall Carers Service

We are delighted to announce that our partnership, CRCC, Disability Cornwall & IoS, Age UK CIOS, Barnardo’s and Promas CIC were the successful bidders for the Carers Service in Cornwall. CRCC are the lead organisation in the partnership. Cornwall Carers Service will begin on 1st July 2021. We would like to share with you some information about Cornwall Carers Service. The Service has 3 levels of support: Level 1 will offer help to self-manage via a whole-age Adviceline, an interactive website, text-to-chat options, live web-chat options, Carers Emergency Card, Carers Passport, Carers Register and Carers Newsletter. Level 2 will offer enhanced support when you need it via the whole-age Adviceline where there will be a dedicated Team available to answer Carers’ calls and queries. There will also be face-to-face support available and access to carer specific training and Community Support. Level 3 will offer formal care and support through a Carers Needs Assessment and associated Support Plan. Through the Support Plan, carers will be empowered to improve their wellbeing and manage their caring role. Support for Young Carers and Young Adult Carers is available through all levels of the Service and will be led by Barnardo’s. As we draw closer to the start of the new Service we will share more information about how carers will be able to link in with Cornwall Carers Service. We hope that this information is helpful and we look forward to working with you in the future. Jayne Price (Care & Prevention Manager) 01736 756655

New Parkinson’s Nurses Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust Emma Worden and Angela Hart are pleased to have been appointed as Parkinson’s Nurses within the Acute Hospitals Trust in Cornwall and are based at Treliske Hospital. This is a new and developing inpatient service for people with Parkinson’s who may need to be admitted to the Acute Hospitals. Emma has been employed at Treliske Hospital for 18 years and has worked as a Frailty Nurse, with a specialist interest in Parkinson’s, for the past 11 years. Angela was previously a community-based Parkinson’s Nurse in Cornwall before working as Community Matron and more recently as a Palliative Care Nurse at Treliske Hospital. They will prioritise medication management and promote the need to ‘get it on time, every time’. They will have a key role in educating staff about Parkinson’s to ensure that if you are admitted to the acute hospitals you feel supported and that your needs are understood. Emma and Angela say they are excited by this new opportunity and are here to support you and your family through both planned or emergency admissions to the acute hospitals in Cornwall. Peninsula Parkinson’s Research Interest Group A small part in the work of Dr Will Young on gait disturbance at Exeter University is turning in to deeper involvement. In September we are back in the Zoom studio. Firstly, to introduce the work of Dr Megan Courtman in Parkinson’s Research, and secondly to host a Talk and Q & A Panel about the Homecare Pathway with Emma Edwards and Emma King on September 15th (see https://penprig.org.uk/events-and-videos). This is what we do, we do it well, and we could use some more help to do it! Get in touch through [email protected]
