Arrive When Conscious Thoughts Depart

There is a sound from my distant past which arrives when falling asleep; it is an earworm of some old dance, perhaps of a European early 17th century metered hymn tune. While not a reference to a real tune, it is the precise form of what I experience. This piece consists of the narrative feature of that tune persisting and invading the semiconscious. First, the frenzied mind stays awake but is gradually overtaken by this old nostalgic sound. Fitful sleep follows, but the tune grows in the shadows. The music is based on the poetic lines below, through which I attempt to mediate my own tendency toward unpredictable and vivid dreaming with the solution of a soothing sound memory. In fact, I think of this as a sort of “prayer to memory,” in hopes that these invocations (and this music) will allow that old dance tune to take over in the end. But in our late time, simple nostalgia cannot be taken alone.

Old song, I call you, tend my mind For healthy sleep to be refined; Restore me, soothe my anxious heart; Arrive when conscious thoughts depart.

Rehear for me the sounds this day; Review my sights as dreams display; Recall for me some fiddles drawn From tranquil pastimes not quite gone.

Relive them as a filtered stream; Play back the cherished sounds in dream; And when the stringings reunite Record them to my heart tonight.
