Specifically, in the southwest Kansas region, there are more than three hundred feed yards and four meat processing plants. Traditionally, processed meat, some of the meat byproducts, grain, and other industry-related products are transported using large trucks (tractor-trailers). In addition to the highway system, there are two Class I railroad carriers and four Class III railroad carriers in the southwest Kansas region. Because there is a rich railroad network in the southwest Kansas region, it is necessary to study whether there is a need to utilize other transportation modes, such as railroad and intermodal, to transport goods and products for the processed meat and related industries. The objectives of this research are to study the transportation modes, their utilizations for the processed meat and related industries in southwest Kansas, and their impacts on local economic development. To achieve the objectives, the research team conducted a literature review, collected data through site visits, interviews, and web-sites, estimated vehicle miles of travel (VMT) by truck using TransCAD software, and projected future growth of processed meat and related industries as well as emerging industry development in the region. The research results demonstrate that there is heavy usage of trucks in the southwest Kansas region which need to be diversified to other transportation modes such as railroad and intermodal. To utilize railroad and intermodal transportation for the processed meat and related industries, there is a need to build required infrastructure near or within the feed yards and meat processing plants to support these transportation modes. In addition, to use the railroad for transporting feed grains, the system infrastructure of short line railroads needs to be improved. During this project, the research team also found that two new industries, dairy and ethanol, are emerging in southwest Kansas. With the development of new businesses, the demand on railroad service (both Class I and Class III) has been increasing recently. These periods are arranged for either a laboratory period or a lecture period, Bowever, in the past it has evolved around one lecture period and two laboratory periods. Our ob- jectives in the course are to familiarize the student with the livestock and meat industry relationships, i.e. live animal carcass comparison, slaughter- ing, cutting, curing and smoking? identification, selection, processing, dis- tribution, utilization of meat and meat products. As more and more subJect material became available in these areas, we found we did not have time to present the students with the subject matter and still do the amount of slaughtering and processing that had been done in the past.

This is a significant increase from just five years ago. In order to fully understand the issue of cargo theft, retailers need to know why it exists, who is perpetrating it, how risk can be reduced, and ultimately how to react to a loss. This article explores a number of dimensions of the issue, and offers several suggestions for mitigating the risk and dealing with theft after it occurs.     Shipbuilding A promising rst half, an uncertain second one 2018 started briskly in the wake of 2017. In the rst half of the year, newbuilding orders were placed at a rate of about 10m dwt per month. However the pace dropped in the second half, as owners grappled with a rise in newbuilding prices and growing uncertainty over the IMO 2020 deadline. Regardless, newbuilding orders rose to 95.5m dwt in 2018 versus 83.1m dwt in 2017. Demand for bulkers, container carriers and specialised ships increased, while for tankers it receded, re ecting low freight rates and poor sentiment. Thanks to this additional demand, shipbuilders succeeded in raising newbuilding prices by about 10%. This enabled them to pass on some of the additional building costs resulting from higher steel prices, new regulations and increased pressure from marine suppliers, who have also been struggling since 2008. The end goal of producing more and better plant-based meat products is to decrease consumption of animal meat products at all levels of quality and price, from steaks to processed meat. Therefore, some of the opportunities and recommendations presented here may apply to only certain types of products or manufacturing methods. For replacement to be successful, in addition to the scientifc and technological opportunities discussed below, we must consider the nutritional profles of various types of plant-based meat and their comparability to the animal products they are designed to replace.

The industry’s rapid consolida- tion in recent years has triggered alarms that the industry’s new giants in retailing and processing could drive up food prices for consumers and drive down livestock prices for producers. How should public policy respond to the industry’s consolidation? And how can all participants in the industry—producers, processors, retailers, and consumers—benefit from its new structure? This article studies the striking changes in the meat industry in three steps. First it describes how the industry is changing. Then it examines the forces driving the industry’s consolidation. Finally, it con- siders how consumers and industry participants are affected. While cur- rent evidence is scant that market power has hurt either consumers or producers, the industry’s rapid consolidation nevertheless warrants vigi- lance. At the same time, public policy might also play a role in ensuring that all participants in the market benefit from its new structure. All three authors are members of the bank’s Center for the Study of Rural America.
