BRADFORD ABBAS VILLAGE HALL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE The Village Hall management committee are pleased to announce that the planning application to extend storage facilities has been successful. This will be on the site adjacent to the grassed area in school, where currently a wooden shed sits within the hall outline. It is the first stage of the plans to refurbish and upgrade the hall, providing better storage space for the existing user groups and changing how and where we store chairs/ tables. We will begin to seek funding from grants etc., for this phase and to move on the other phased stages of facility improvement such as the toilet and committee room areas as we gain funds and are ready to do so. Unfortunately we did not get a grant from Sherborne Rotary this year for a particular project surrounding a projector and screen but were encouraged to try again next year if this remains one of our smaller targets. If anyone Can offer some time to the committee, or take on a particular delegated task, we would like to hear from you to support running the hall. Please contact Ruth Jacklin (700001) or Barry Cassingham (427760).

HELP THE VILLAGE SCHOOL I've recently become a Community Governor for Bradford Abbas School. I've been very impressed by the hard work of the staff, and the standard of education and care that they show - we should all be very proud to have such a good school in our village. However I have also been made very aware of the pressures they are under to not just educate the children, but to keep the school functioning. This includes a vast range of administrative and documentation work, but also involves the maintenance and improvement of the buildings, grounds and infrastructure. All this falls on the shoulders of the Head Teacher, and must be financed from the fixed budget. The PTA do an excellent job of doing a lot of this work and hence saving money for the school to spend on actual education, but they are of course mainly working folk and hence have limited time available. Would you be able to help them out and lend a hand occasionally? Perhaps your children or grandchildren went to the school, or maybe you wenl yourself. You may just want to support the school in a practical way and contribute to the community. As an example this summer we are refurbishing the two classrooms in the old building. Much of the work will be done by professionals, but the old equipment and fittings need to be stripped out, the rooms will need redecorating and the furniture installed. There will be lots of cleaning to be done. Rubbish will need to be taken to the tip. There will be lots of ways in which we could all help. If you would like to be part of this or any other work that needs to be done, please let me know and I can keep you involved with any projects that are happening. Needing a good home: As mentioned in the article above, as part of the school refurbishment all the chairs, tables and cupboards from the top classroom are being replaced. The chairs and tables are sized for 10 and II year olds, I expect many of you will have sat at them yourselves or in similar. The cupboards are racked out with plastic filing trays. After all this time all these things are obviously past their best but are all perfectly serviceable. For instance the chairs would be ideal as garden furniture and the cupboards would have a number of uses in various ways. Let me know if you might be interested in any of these items and I can give you more details. Dick Bennett (01935 - 474306) or email dick [email protected]

KEEPING IN TOUCH. The next meeting will be on 8th July in the Village Hall from 2:00pm until 4:00pm. Please come along if you can as we need to decide if we have the need for this particular tea afternoon to continue, as it was set up originally when the shop was closed and people were not keeping in touch. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

PERSONAL MESSAGES Judy Burchett would like to thank all those in the village who were able to attend Mick's funeral, and those who joined us at the Sherborne Hotel afterwards. It was lovely to see so many of you there. Also for the support you have given me and Mick over the last two years. We both came to appreciate what village life is all about - friendship. Mick's donations amounted to £2000, which we were able to give to 'Ward 9' when we went to see them in the middle of June - they were very grateful and asked me to thank everyone. So those of you who gave, thank you so very much in helping to achieve such a great sum to help them on the ward at Musgrove Park Hospital. I know it will be put to good use for the patients there, as Mick wanted.
