    CHAPTER 1 WELCOME TO THE NATIONAL CRIME AUTHORITY Maybe it was who you knew, not what you knew, that would help you get ahead in the Force. In the early 1980s in Sydney, drug dealing was big—it still is. In 1981, the infamous drug dealer and armed robber, Warren Lanfranchi, was wanted nationally for the attempted murder of a traffic cop in Sydney. When Lanfranchi aimed the shot, the firing pin jammed in the hammer of his revolver, which saved the life of the traffic cop that day. Lanfranchi became a prime target of the New South Wales Police Force. My partner Schuey and I had information that Lanfranchi sold heroin on behalf of the notorious drug kingpin Neddy Smith to Aborigines who hung out at the Everleigh Hotel. The Everleigh was in the area called The Block in inner-city Redfern. Warren Lanfranchi was a creature of habit. If he wasn’t at The Block tormenting drug addicted Aborigines, he wouldn’t be too far away. It was a matter of hitting the place a couple of times to catch him. So, dressed in jeans and T-shirts, Schuey and I bowled through the Everleigh Hotel searching for him. We were the only two white guys in the dump. 13 DIRTY WORK The locals did not welcome our arrival. In fact, they were hostile, shouting and mouthing threats under their breath, until the loudest loudmouth in the place accidentally fell from his barstool and landed on his arse. After that it was dead quiet. Schuey and I searched the pub high and low for Lanfranchi.

    DEEP BLUE MURDER Ex cops at centre of death probe as body surfaces WRAPPED in a tarp and floating in the sea off Cronulla, the body of murder victim Jamie Gao was found by a fisherman early yesterday. Several hours later, former police officer Glen McNamara faced court charged with his killing. As of last night, disgraced detective Roger Rogerson was still wanted for questioning over the death. Police will allege CCTV captured the pair walking into a storage unit with Mr Gao and leaving minutes later carrying a body in a bag. FORMER detectives Roger Rogerson and Glen McNamara walked into a storage facility with young Asian student Jamie Gao — minutes later only two of them walked out carrying a body, police will allege. Damning CCTV footage allegedly captured the two former officers carrying between them what appears to be the body of Mr Gao, wrapped in a blue tarpaulin. The whole sequence of events from Mr Gao’s meeting about an hour earlier when he allegedly got into a car with the two men on a Padstow street was filmed on CCTV at various businesses in the south-western Sydney suburb. Police will allege Mr Gao was killed in an alleged $3 million ice — methamphetamine — deal gone wrong. The two experienced former police officers are alleged to have used their own cars. It is claimed that Mr Gao’s body was put in McNamara’s white station wagon, which was followed by Rogerson in his silver Ford Falcon. McNamara, 55, was yesterday charged with murdering Mr Gao, 20, even though his body had not then been found.

    Contemporary Comment MISCARRIAGES - WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?* Any attempt to deal with wrongful convictions requires a thorough understanding of their causes. A common and tempting response to perceived flaws in any system is to jump in rapidly with a reform, an adjustment or a refinement but, often as not, such changes fail to address the problem at its root. Dealing with the legal system - in which perceptions are considered as significant, if not as flighty, as those in the money markets - we have an additional, semi-religious peculiarity known as the doctrine of sustaining the integrity of the system. This notion implies several things: first, that the reputation of the legal system has a precious, perhaps supreme value; second, that any perceived flaws in the system must be rapidly seen to be dealt with and disposed of; and third, that any such flaws can only be admitted at the periphery of a system which owes its integrity, or wholeness, to the coherence, trustworthiness and bona fides of its component parts. Justice being seen to be done looms as large in the minds of most judges and senior barristers as justice actually being done. The best recent example of this in recent times was the expressed horror of the British Judge Alfred Denning, that the wrongful convictions of some unfortunate Irish people known as the Birmingham Six and Guildford Four might be overturned. In 1980 Denning expressed the matter starkly, in a judgement dismissing a civil action for assault brought against arresting police by the Birmingham Six: If the six men win, it will mean that the police were guilty of perjury, that they were guilty of violence and threats, that the confessions were involuntary and were improperly admitted into evidence and that the convictions were erroneous ..

    :: SCAN | journal of media arts culture :: Scan Journal vol 2 number 1 april 2005 Blue Murder: a RE-IMAGINED history Greg Levine & Stephen McElhinney Erich Auerbach, whilst discussing the influence of Joyce and Proust’s use of reflected consciousness and time strata, makes an interesting comparison between a novel’s conception of time and a film’s: a concentration of space and time such as can be achieved by the film (for example the representation, within a few seconds and by means of a few pictures, of the situation of a widely dispersed group of people, of a great city, an army, a war, an entire country) can never be within the reach of the spoken or written word. (Auerbach, 1991:546) The interesting part for us is the phrase “a great city”. In a few sequences a film can give you a version of the past far richer in detail than any history book in the same space of time. This paper will apply this idea to the tele-movie Blue Murder (1995), a quasi-fictional account of Sydney’s criminal milieu of the 1970s and 80s. Made in 1995 and screened on ABC TV in most parts of Australia shortly after, Blue Murder was not broadcast in NSW and the ACT until July 31, 2001. The 6- year delay was caused by a legal embargo placed on the mini-series because Neddy Smith, the main character depicted in the piece, was still on trial for the crimes the portrayed. We compare Blue Murder ’s representation of events in Sydney’s past with impressions of the present by visiting the haunts of the central characters and experiencing the space between representation and actual lived perception.

    Underbelly: A Case Study in Cultural Production Anne Elizabeth Ferguson Bachelor Communication Bachelor Arts (Hons) School of Criminology and Criminal Justice Arts, Education Law Griffith University Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Submitted for examination May 2016 Synopsis Based loosely on the events which occurred in Melbourne during the period 1995-2004, Underbelly retold the story of how and why a gang war was carried out on Melbourne streets. It also told the story of why Task Force Purana was formed to bring the gang war to an end. Being scheduled for broadcast concurrently with the R v A trial, Underbelly raised concerns about the judicial process, namely the rights of the accused to a fair trial, free from external interference. I am not aware, nor was the Victorian judiciary, of the scheduling of any other television crime mini-series which had coincided with a trial. Melbournians were frequently subjected to the real events of the capital city’s gangland war which were widely reported in various newspapers, and which were broadcast on television, radio and the internet where viewers were confronted with gruesome images of victims. Capitalising on the popularity of such news stories were numerous books such as Big Shots (Shand, 2007a), Leadbelly (Silvester and Rule, 2004) and Underbelly (Silvester and Rule, 2008), still in print at the time of Underbelly’s broadcast and available to Victorians even when the series was banned. The news items and books informed the public about the controversial lives of those who chose to live outside societal norms.
