ANNUAL REPORT 2015 – 2016 Revered Chief Guest, Distinguished President, Esteemed Secretary, Illustrious members of Vellalar Educational Trust, Learned members of the staff, non-teaching staff, parents, ladies and gentlemen and my dear students. It is indeed my proud privilege to welcome our Chief Guest Dr.N.Yesodha Devi, Secretary, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore, who has graciously consented to be with us here today for the 46th Annual Day celebrations, despite her ever busy hectic schedule and to deliver the college day address and to distribute prizes to the meritorious students who have excelled in their academics. I extend a warm welcome to the dignitaries on the dais, faculty members, non-teaching staff, parents, students and all other invitees. Vellalar College for Women is the fruit of monumental efforts of a few visionaries of the Kongu Vellalar Community who nurtured and cradled this Institution with the grand vision of social and economic empowerment of rural women. Before presenting a brief account of the excellence and achievements in all our endeavours during 2015 – 2016, let me place on record, my respectful homage to the great souls who were behind the birth and growth of this institution. With due thanks to Almighty and with a deep sense of pleasure, I now present the Annual Report for the academic year 2015-16 to this august gathering. With a profound sense of pride and happiness, I would like to place on record that our institution has been recognized by DST and DBT, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. The Department of Science and Technology (FIST) has sanctioned Rs. 69,50,000 for Science Departments and the Department of Biotechnology, has sanctioned Rs. 58 lakhs under “Star College Scheme” in October, 2015 to five Under Graduate Science Departments viz., Botany, Chemistry, Nutrition and Dietetics, Computer Science and Mathematics. These Departments have been executing the scheme excellently, focusing on their goals and objectives. The First Annual Advisory Committee meeting of DBT Star College Scheme was held on 18.02.2016 with Dr. Suman Govil, Advisor, DBT, Government of India. 2 Current Strength of the College The Academic year commenced on 18.06.2015, with 1488 students in the Under-Graduate and 232 students in the Post-Graduate programmes of the aided courses. 66 teaching staff and 19 non-teaching staff are serving in the Aided Wing. A strength of 2934 students in the Under Graduate and 564 students in the Post Graduate programmes, 156 teaching staff and 85 non- teaching staff are in the Self-financing Wing. 81 scholars have registered for M.Phil. and 7 scholars for Ph.D. programmes during the current year. Utmost efforts had been taken in planning and carrying out the activities of the academic year 2015-16 to effectively transform the students into respectable and responsible citizens of our country. Courses offered The College offers 20 UG programmes and 12 PG programmes, 8 UGC sponsored Career-Oriented Add-on Courses, 3 Bharathiar University approved Certificate Courses, 11other Certificate Programmes and 10 Research Programmes.
