Scandinavica Vol 52 No 2 2013 Stockholm’s Archipelago and Strindberg’s: Historical Reality and Modern Myth-Making Massimo Ciaravolo University of Florence Abstract The Stockholm Archipelago is ubiquitous in the prose, poetry, drama and non-fiction of August Strindberg. This article examines the interaction in Strindberg’s oeuvre between the city of Stockholm as civilized space and the wild space surrounding it, tracing the development of a literary myth of Eden in his work. Strindberg’s representations of the shifting relations between city and nature, it is argued, played (and still play) an important role in the cultural construction of mythologies of the loss of the wild space. The environments described in Strindberg’s texts are subject to changes, shifts and repetitions with variations, such that the archipelago in itself can be read as a mirror of the polyphony of points of view, the variability and the ambiguities we find in his oeuvre at large. The archipelago is ubiquitous in his oeuvre; it occurs in prose as well as in poetry and in drama, and it characterizes both fiction, autobiography and non-fiction (essays, letters and diaries). It can sometimes provide the setting to whole works, but in a series of other works it can be included as one of the settings, or even be mentioned peripherally. -

1 Laurence Olivier in Hamlet (1949) In the late 1930s and early 1940s, when Samuel Goldwyn, MGM, and David Selznick were wooing him, Laurence Olivier chose not to become a movie star “like dear Cary.” After playing Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights (1939), Darcy in Pride and Prejudice (1940), and Maxim Dewinter in Rebecca (1940), he appeared in Hollywood pictures sparingly and tried to avoid a fixed persona. He nevertheless became the symbol of what midcentury America thought of as a distinguished actor, and was the most successful English theatrical type in the movies. He wasn’t romantically flamboyant (Orson Welles was closer to that), he wasn’t a naturalist like the students of the Method, he wasn’t a Brechtian, and he wasn’t the sort of movie actor who plays variations on a single character. He belonged instead to a school of disciplined, tastefully romantic verisimilitude, and within that school was a master. He was also the best-known Shakespearian in films. Olivier often said that his favorite movie role was the working-class comedian Archie Rice in The Entertainer (1960), but his performances in the Shakespeare films that he directed are more representative of his skills and more significant in film history. Based on canonical texts with a long performance history, they foreground his stylistic choices 2 and make his influences relatively easy to identify. His version of Hamlet (1949), for example, seems to derive pretty equally from the English romantics, Sigmund Freud, and William Wyler. These sources are not so eclectic as they might appear. Romantic-realist ideas of narrative shaped nearly all feature films of the period; Wyler had been the director of Wuthering Heights and at one point was scheduled to direct Olivier’s production of Henry V; and Olivier’s conceptions of character and performance are similar to the ones that shaped Hollywood in the 1940s, when Freud was in vogue. -

European modernist drama developed in two qualitatively distinct stages, and these two stages subsequently arrived in the United States in two distinct waves. The first stage of European modernist drama, characterized predominantly by the genres of naturalism and realism, emerged in Europe during the four decades from the 1890s to the 1920s. This first wave of European modernism reached the United States in the late 1910s and throughout the 1920s, coming to prominence through productions in New York City. The second stage of European modernism dates from 1930 through the 1960s and is characterized predominantly by the absurdist and epic genres. Unlike the first wave, the dramas of the second wave of European modernism were not first produced in New York. Instead, these plays were often given their premieres in smaller cities across the United States: San Francisco, Seattle, Cleveland, Hartford, Boston, and New Haven, in the regional theatres which were rapidly proliferating across the United States. -

Krapp. landmark Site: :Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1016, lDt 11. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the landmarks Preservation Conunission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a landmark of the Broadhurst '!heater and the proposed designation of the related landmark Site (Item No. 19). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty-one witnesses spoke or had statements read into the record in favor of designation. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. 'Ihe owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. 'Ihe Connnission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPITON AND ANALYSIS 'lhe Broadhurst '!heater survives t00ay as one of the historic theaters that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built shortly after the end of World War I, the Broadhurst was one of a pair with the Plymouth and among the numerous theaters constructed by the Shubert Organization, to the designs of Herbert J. Krapp, that typified the development of the Times Square/Broadway theater district. Founded by the three brothers Sam s., lee and J.J. Shubert, the Shubert organization was the dominant shaper of New York's theater district. Beginning as producers, the brothers expanded into the building of theaters as well, and eventually helped cover the blocks east and west of Broadway in Midtown with playhouses. -

Tongues and Trees: Towards a Green Pentecostal Pneumatology by AARON JASON SWOBODA A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY School of Philosophy, Theology and Religion College of Arts and Law The University of Birmingham July 2011 1 ABSTRACT This thesis develops a Pentecostal ecotheology by utilizing key pneumatological themes that emerge from the Pentecostal tradition. It examines and utilizes the salient Pentecostal and Charismatic voices that have stimulated ecotheology in the Pentecostal tradition and situates them within the broader context of Christian ecumenical ecotheologies (Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, and Ecofeminist). These Pentecostal expressions are placed in dialogue with the particular ecological pneumatologies of Denis Edwards (Roman Catholic), Mark Wallace (Protestant), and Sallie McFague (Ecofeminist). The thesis advances a novel approach to Pentecostal ecotheology through a pneumatology of the Spirit baptized creation, the charismatic creational community, the holistic ecological Spirit, and the eschatological Spirit of ecological mission. Significantly, this thesis is the first substantive contribution to a Pentecostal pneumatological theology of creation with a particular focus on the Pentecostal community and its significance for the broader ecumenical community. Furthermore, it offers a fresh theological approach to imagining and sustaining earth-friendly practice in the twenty-first century Pentecostal church. 2 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Before continuing, some long-standing personal debts must be paid. Södertörns högskola Litteraturvetenskap med genusinriktning Konsten att svälja sin läsare En analys av August Strindbergs roman En dåres försvarstal Mikael Färnbo C-uppsats framlagd för Jakob Staberg HT 06 Abstract This essay analyses the act of reading August Strindberg’s novel En dåres försvarstal (A Madman’s defence). It reveals the writer’s motif and purpose with the text and it shows how a certain interpretation of the text is crucial for the writer’s intentions to become reality. But it also shows how this interpretation is threaten by several, both intertextual and extratextual, thematically and structural, factors. Those factors are logical effects of the writer’s motif and purpose and they inevitably creates an ambiguous narrative structure witch threatens to undermine, from the writers point of view, the optimal interpretation of the text. The essay also reveals several thematical and structural strategies that, in spite of the inevitable ambiguity, the writer make use of to prevent alternative interpretations and at the same time reinforce the one suited for its own needs. Furthermore, the essay comment some other writings about the novel in the vast field of Strindberg research. It shows that there is a tendency to analyse the ambiguity of the text as an effect of some kind of unconscious crisis. It deconstructs these different kinds of interpretations and shows that there is an alternative, completely logical, way of reading the novel that also suits its writers intentions, although that kind of reading is threaten by the -

Egil Törnqvist TRANSLATING DOCUDRAMA PER OLOV ENQUIST'S TRIBADERNAS NATT IN ENGLISH AND FRENCH Documentary drama or, for short, docudrama differs from `ordinary' drama in its heavy reliance on authentic material. As in the case of historical drama, this means that the recipients — readers and spectators — fall into two categories: those who know the facts underlying the drama and those who do not. The difference between the source text and the target text recipients is merely gradual. The difference between recipients within both groups may, in fact, be greater than the difference between them. In extreme cases, recipients may not even realize that they are confronted with a docudrama. For the readers, ignorance about the underlying authentic reality can easily be resolved by means of an illuminating introduction and/or informative notes. Since this kind of material appears more often in target texts than in source texts, the readers of translations are surprisingly enough frequently in a more favorable position than the readers of the source text. For the spectators the situation is the opposite. Here the source text recipients are definitely in a better position to separate facts from fiction. This means that in the theatre, the authenticity of a docudrama can only be grasped by those spectators who have the necessary pre-knowledge, a pre-knowledge that is usually secured via the theatre program. As in the case of historical drama, this pre-knowledge is especially important when it comes to productions abroad. Scandinavian drama — except for Holberg, Ibsen, Strindberg and, lately, Lars Norén — has rarely been successful outside the Nordic area. -

As a dramatist, he wrote one of the most frequently produced plays in American dramatic history, Our Town. Given his fame, it is surprising that very little has been written about Wilder’s dramatic works from a political perspective. My dissertation aims to address this oversight by unearthing a family-based social and political ethic in his dramatic works. Through close study of his plays, interviews, letters, influences, and other writings, I have found that he promotes a democratic ethic through his drama. He creates the utopia that he longed to see in our global political climate and imagines what the world would look like if we truly ascribed to democratic ideals.
