Jewish Organists and Organs in German Synagogues The title alone sounds nonsensical to most of us. But there is now an entire book on the subject, carried out with meticulous care by a German writer, describing herself as “a scholar who is not Jewish”, prompted by her accidental discovery that such people and activities once flourished. More than that, they continue into our present era and will do so in the future, it is hoped. Her research led to a comprehensive work in German, published in 2005. Now we have its English translation, published by the Oxford University Press in 2009: The Organ and Its Music in German-Jewish Culture by Tina Frühauf ISBN 978-0-19-533706-8 (284 pages, hard-back) We regard the organ as a Christian possession, a vital part of the religious service. But it was only slowly accepted ca. 900—1100 CE, when still a primitive instrument, and even then it was not incorporated into the liturgy. By comparison, instrumental music (whatever its form may have been) was apparently used in prayer by the ancient Hebrews; there is even a possibility that an organ — the magrepha — was used in the Temple in Jerusalem. It was not until the 15th century that Christianity adopted the organ as a devotional instrument, and this was slow to take hold. The Presbyterian Church, for example, did not accept the organ in services until well into the 19th century. There was concern that organ music would be regarded as frivolous, unworthy of the gravity of religion. Jewish orthodox practice continues to take this attitude. -

Read more about Joan's career later in this issue. More than 200 votes were cast by the Chapter membership, and it is clear that many people hold a deep appreciation for all Joan has done and continues to do in the world of the pipe organ and its music. Brava! The International Performer of the Year Award was created in 1978 to recognize excellence in organ performance and to increase public awareness of the organ and its performers. Robert Noehren was the first recipient of the award, in 1978. The award is considered by many to be the highest organists' honor given by a musicians' guild in the United States. The New York City Chapter's Distinguished Career Award was created in 2016 to honor people for exemplary service to the organ, choral music, and related fields. The inaugural recipient was Diane Bish. Each award is made on a biennial basis. Our grateful thanks go to the Awards Committee members, Chelsea Chen, David Hurd, Daniel Hyde, and Donald Meineke, Chair. -

Organ Interpretation Competition for the Johann Pachelbel Award at the 69th ION Music Festival 26 June - 02 July 2020 A WARM INVITATION TO NUREMBERG For 52 years, young artists have been invited to come to Nuremberg in early summer to give proof of their artistic prowess to a jury comprised of prominent experts. The climax of this process has always been the presentation of the widely known Johann Pachelbel Award. And so again we issue an invitation to register for this prestigious international interpretation competition in 2020. What is it all about? The organ interpretation competition is looking for organists who in their young careers have already achieved independent interpretation of significant works of organ literature. But it will also seek interaction with contemporary works. And expect competitors to be able to deal with both the soundscapes and playing technique of historical organs and to cope with the possibilities and challenges of modern instruments. At the same time, this interpretation competition explicitly demands not only technical skills, but also looks for interpretations which are courageous, sometimes leaving matters open, finding new aspects in well-known works, and eliciting unique sounds from the instruments themselves – feeding on the tension between tradition and future perspectives. And of course, the sequence of works, the organists’ programming and sometimes the link between the individual compositions to be played is of special interest to the jurors. This is all about a contemporary way of dealing with the history of music and instruments. From the first round on, the competition will be public. The final will be an integral element of the festival programme of the 69th ION Music Festival, staged in the world famous Old Town of Nuremberg, and played on the Peter organ of St Sebaldus’ Church. -

Die Marienkirche in Grimmen und die zum Kirchspiel gehörenden Kirchen und Kapellen in Kaschow, Klevenow und Stoltenhagen 1 Grimmen von Süden, Stadtansicht des Eilhard Lubin, 1610/1618 Die Entstehung der Stadt Grimmen Das Gebiet der späteren Stadt Grimmen, das zum festländischen Teil des Fürstentums Rügen gehörte, wurde längere Zeit sowohl von den mecklenburgischen als auch von den pommerschen Herzögen beansprucht. Die Auseinandersetzungen zogen sich von der zwei- ten Häl e des 12. bis in die erste Häl e des 13. Jahrhunderts hin. Die damals noch völlig unerschlossene sump ge Niederung südlich von Grimmen bildete eine natürliche Grenze zum Gebiet von Demmin, das in den 1120er Jahre von den pommerschen Fürsten erobert und 1128 von Bischof Otto von Bamberg zum Christentum bekehrt wor- den war. Die mecklenburgischen Bischöfe setzten sich im festländi- schen Teil des Fürstentums fest und begannen von Schwerin aus mit ihrer Missionsarbeit. Nach dem Aussterben des rügischen Fürsten- geschlechts 1325 gewannen die pommerschen Herzöge das Fürsten- tum, doch es gehörte weiter zum Bistum Schwerin. Seit dem 13. Jahrhundert zogen die slawischen Fürsten deutsche Siedler zur wirtscha lichen Erschließung des Landes heran. Für jene Zeit lassen sich im Bereich der späteren Gemarkung Grimmen mehrere slawische Siedlungen erschließen. Eine im Schutz der fürst- lichen Burg o e n b a r rasch wachsende, sich zur deutschen Stadt ent- wickelnde Siedlung unmittelbar westlich der Burg trat hinzu. Zu ihr 2 gehörte die neu errichtete Pfarrkirche. Da entsprechende Urkunden fehlen, lässt sich ein genaues Gründungsdatum für Grimmen nicht nennen. In den 1280er Jahren wird die 1267 erstmals erwähnte Sied- lung mit lübischem Recht bewidmet worden sein.
