February 2018 Thessaloniki - Greece ii Abstract This dissertation was written as part of the MSc in Energy Law, Business, Regulation and Policy at the International Hellenic University. Greece is the country which constitutes a main pillar, the last north border of Europe adjoined with the East. It belongs in the region of Mediterranean Sea which is of great geopolitical importance. The latest years Greece is trying to get involved directly and powerfully in the global energy world through delivering energy and producing by exploited its deposits of oil and gas. Owing to the geographic position, it is a key “player” as a transit country based on the pipeline projects, as TAP and others. Additionally, there are plenty discussions about the fossil fuels existing in the underground and the efforts to reach an agreement for the exploitation of these. After long-term researches and explorations, we are nowadays in the nodal point of the fulfillment the prerequisites and continue after the competitions and the interest that giant companies expressed. This thesis is interested to analyze in dept the key factors that could affect a country to exploit its reserves, enhancing the energy security and ensuring better conditions for its future dealing with the economic crisis. Moreover, this dissertation makes an effort to handle the possible consequences of such an exploitation in relation with the global supply and demand, the prices of fossil fuels as well. Concluding, it focuses on the significance for the economy and the position of the country in the global energy market, baring in mind the energy glut. According to the following analysis, someone could be able to understand in depth what happens in the Greek region in relation with the explorations taking place in the past and the existence of oil and gas in the territory, as well the ability of the state to play a significant role transferring energy to neighboring countries. Moreover, it becomes clear that the exploitation of this fossil wealth from the womb of the earth is a key factor for the active involvement of the country in the energy map, basically owing to its geopolitical position. Plenty useful documents, academic literature and global bibliography relative to the issue enhance the evidences of this thesis. Following the structure of the dissertation, Chapter 1 contains an analysis of the geopolitical position of Greece and its great importance, the connection with the other countries by pipelines projects and delivering energy boosting energy security and targeting to become a powerful transit country. Subsequently, Chapter 2 is referred to the history of discoveries of fossil fuels in Greek land in detailed from the beginning until 2014 and the reasons why some projects never continued that period. There is also reference to the innovative energy law 4001/2011. Afterwards, the 3rd Chapter presents two adverse opinions relative whether or not is beneficial for Greece to continue the agreements for the exploitation of oil and gas. Additionally, there is a link between this possible act and the economic crisis which afflict the nation from 2008. Last but not least, Chapter 4 is divided into two sections. At the beginning is made a connection between the past projects in areas that left unexploited facing a lot of obstacles with new researches and the discovery of big amounts of fossil fuels in there, the companies that have shown interest to invest and the optimistic scenario, to become Greece a new major player in the global energy puzzle. The second section presents the consumption of fossil fuels in Greece and how exploitation could be affected by the global energy glut. Finally, the thesis indicates a conclusion focusing on the ability of Greece to improve its position in the energy map, play a crucial role in the delivering of energy and why not production, always under specific 6 circumstances, baring in mind the prices, the demand and supply and the storing of reserves. 1. It is formed in a downwind area of an island or a coast, or at the end of a river where the conditions are appropriate by the incremental progress of sand and gravels in a triangle shape. The formation of the shape depends on the wave refraction and the deposition of sediments at the two sides of the triangle. Some cuspate forelands are flushed with floras which emigrated from the main land and they consist of many geomorphological features, like the lagoon and different types of dunes. Such kinds of ecosystems are sensitive to the human’s activity and nature. The subject of this research was the geological history and geomorphological characteristics of such a cuspate foreland. To this purpose, electric resistivity tomography (ERT) method was employed to map the vertical sequence of sediments in such an environment. The research was focused on a specific cuspate foreland at ‘Mytikas’ in Epanomi, close to Thessaloniki. The main purpose of the work was to map the surface sediments as well as the stratigraphy in depth and to record all the features that are developed on it and which contributed to the forming of this ecosystem.

A place that becomes a vacation resort for many citizens of Thessaloniki especially in the summer and only 45 minutes away is Chalkidiki. Chalkidiki is a beautiful place, which combines the sea with the mountain. Today, Chalkidiki is a summer resort for the people of Thessaloniki. It is really a gifted place due to its natural resources, its crystal waters and also the graphical as well as traditional villages.

The present study deals with the hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical characterization of the granular aquifer system for the purposes of efficient utilization and management of groundwater resources. It is a multilayered formation, composed of unconsolidated to semi-consolidated sands, gravels, conglomerates, sandstones and marly limestones with intercalated impermeable to semi-permeable beds of clays, marls or mixed with pebbles and sands.

Abstract The Anthemountas river basin is located in northern Greece and covers an area of 374 km2. The mountainous part of the basin consists of ophiolitic, crystalline and carbonate rocks, whereas the lowlands comprise Neogene and Quaternary sedi- ments. Porous aquifers are developed in neogene and quaternary deposits of con- fined and/or unconfined conditions. Karstic aquifers are developed in the carbonate rocks and there are aquifers in the Mesozoic and Palaeozoic fissured rocks. The wa- ter demands of the basin are mainly met by the exploitation of the porous aquifers through a large number of boreholes (more than 1000). The aquifers of fissured rocks discharge through cold springs without significant flow rate. Thermal hot springs are recorded across the Anthemountas fault discharging a mixture of geo- thermal fluids and cold water from the karst aquifer. According to their hydrogeo- logical and lithological characteristics, porous aquifers can be divided into the sub- systems of Galatista and Galarinos in the eastern part of the Anthemountas basin, Vasilika-Risio-Thermi and Tagardes-Trilofos in the western part and Peraia-Agia Triada and AUTh farm-Makedonia airport in the coastal area.

Abstract: The western Peloponnese, being very close to the Hellenic Trench, is one of the most active areas in Greece. The study area is located at the central western part of Peloponnese and it is developed in a NNW–SSE direction along 45 km, parallel to the Ionian Trench, which occurs at a distance of only 30–40 km to the west. Based on the morphotectonic studies of the neotectonic macrostructures of the central-western Peloponnese in many scales, it was concluded that the main neo- tectonic mega-structure is the “Megalopolis–Lykaeon–Minthi–Tetrazio Composite Morphotectonic Structure” (MELYMITE CMS) (1st order structure). The neotectonic deformation is expressed not only by faults, but also by folds which in some cases are the principal structures of the neotectonic deformation. Neotectonic folds occur in the Alpine formations as well as in the post-Alpine ones in various scales. The folds, and the ductile deformation in general, are not easily observed on the surface because of the intense presence of brittle tectonics. A rotational couple stress-fi eld could satisfactory incorporate and explain the brittle-ductile neotectonic structures of the area. Kurzfassung: Die westliche Peloponnes, recht nahe dem Hellenischen Graben gelegen, ist eines der tektonisch aktivsten Gebiete Griechenlands.
