This year, like so many before saw our Regiment working hard, deployed across the country and across the globe. On the numerous duties, exercises and operations, once again, you all represented the Regiment so well. This year saw so much activity and historical events. The most significant event was of course the passing of my predecessor, Lady Patricia Countess Mountbatten of Burma. An elegant lady who loved our regiment dearly and she will be missed. We also saw the commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of Vimy Ridge, one of Canada’s landmark battles in the First World War, where I was grateful to attend with the Colonel of the Regiment, Major-General (Retired) Vernon. In addition to participating in 1st Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group’s Exercise IRON RAM, the First Battalion (1 PPCLI) was heavily deployed in domestic and by an embedded team from 3 RIFLES. Earlier in the year, international operations. Of note, Lieutenant-Colonel Alpha Company (Major Wyatt and Master Warrant Officer Rutland, Regimental Sergeant Major Forest and most Proctor) successfully served as the core of the Operation of the Battalion Headquarters, Bravo Company (Major REASSURANCE Rotation 6 in Poland, led by the battalion’s Chelsea Braybrook and Master Warrant Officer Hryniw) Deputy Commanding Officer until the end of February. Additionally, 3 PPCLI deployed individual soldiers across the globe, to include: Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Egypt, Ukraine, the Congo and Latvia. As we begin 2018 the Third Battalion will continue to build their “Light Fighting” skills and I look forward to the results of the trials on Exercise SPARTAN HOPLON. In addition to the extensive work done by our battalions the Extra Regimentally Employed Patricias were busy in headquarters and schools across the country and the globe. Whether they ran operations or trained a new generation of soldiers, their work is greatly admired and appreciated.     Be in the Know with OBIO… New Federal Health Minister: Cabinet Shuffle Recap By: Grant Burns, Public Affairs and Communications Manager As part of a federal cabinet shuffle announced on Monday, August 28, Canada’s Minister of Health is now Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Member of Parliament from the riding of Moncton—Riverview—Dieppe in New Brunswick. In total, six MPs had their portfolios changed, addressing two issues for the federal government: 1. The Ministry of Indigenous & Northern Affairs was split in two: the previous Minister of Health, Jane Philpott, will now take over the new Ministry of Indigenous Services and Carolyn Bennett will remain responsible for the Ministry of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs. To replace Minister Philpott at Health, it is noteworthy that Ginette Petitpas Taylor was promoted from outside cabinet, where she had been serving as Parliamentary Secretary to Minster of Finance. 2. To fill the vacancy in the Ministry of Public Services & Procurement caused by Min Judy Foote stepping down last week, Carla Qualtrough was promoted from the Ministry of Sport & Persons with Disabilities. First, Canada has taken a lead role in the establishment of a battalion-sized battle group in Latvia (Operation REASSURANCE), as part of NATO’s enhanced forward presence to deter Russian use of force against NATO territory (Article 5 commitment). Operation REASSURANCE also includes an air force commitment of six fighter jets (“Six Pack”) to provide air protection along NATO’s eastern and southern flanks, as well as a naval frigate committed to tasks in the Mediterranean and Black seas. Canada is one of four NATO allies to take such a prominent role. The other three battalion groups in this deterrence initiative are led by the U.K. in Estonia, Germany in Lithuania, and the U.S. in Poland. This has placed Canada’s commitment squarely on the politico-military map. Canada’s second operation is a NATO out-of-area training and capacity-building mission in Ukraine. While not a member of NATO and therefore not subject to Article 5 provisions of deterrence and defence, Ukraine is a long-standing NATO partner under the auspices of the Partnership for Peace (PfP).

Government seeking public feedback on health-care review The government is now taking public feedback as part of its review of the province’s health superboard, Alberta Health Services. Members of the public can submit feedback via a newly created email address. ​ ​ Health Minister Tyler Shandro announced the Alberta Health Services review on May 30 with ​ ​ the goal of finding savings a decade after the superboard’s formation. The province directed more than $22 billion to the super board last year, roughly 40 per cent of the government’s overall budget. “All input will be reviewed and considered,” Shandro said in a statement on Thursday. “We are committed to releasing the final report publicly.” The province has hired Ernst and Young to conduct the review; the firm is scheduled to report its findings by December 31.
