Todacheene After we get back to our country it will brighten up again and the Navajos will be as happy as the land, black clouds will rise and there will be plenty of rain. –Barboncito, 1868 Introduction Traditional Navajos believe the Diné Bahane’1 or the “Navajo creation story” and journey narrative was given to the Navajo people by the Holy Beings. Changing Woman is the Holy Being that created the four original clans of the Navajo and saved humans from the monsters that were destroying the earth. The Navajo tribe is matrilineal because Changing Woman created the clan system in the creation story. -

INTRODUCTION Three-types of educational systems are foundwithin the Navajo Reservation:(1). state-supported public schools, (2)Bureau of Indian Affairs Boarding and DaySchools, and (3) private schools. Approximately 50,000 students attend school daily,with sOme^25,-000 enrolled in public schools; 20,850 attendingBureau of Indian Affairs schools, and the remaining 4,000or so registered at private schools. Few special education servicesare available to students. Only fifty-two special class unitsare provided in Bureau of Indian Affairs schools.Public schools offer no organized specialservices while several private schools providesome services to handicapped children.Therefore, it was and is readily apparent thata signifi- cant number of handicapped children receiveno special educational services.Prior to the efforts of the Navajo EducationResource Center, no regional.plan for full services tohandicappedchildrek, p had been developed. To initiate movement in service provisionfor handicapped Indiarchildren, it was necessary to identify thesechildren, define". Ross) Keywords : Diatreme, non-bedded pyroclastic rocks, phreatomagmatic, Navajo volcanic field Abstract Cathedral Cliff is a well exposed mid-Tertiary phreatomagmatic diatreme in the Navajo volcanic field, New Mexico. Post-eruptive erosion, estimated between 500 m and 1000 m, exposes the deep part of the diatreme. Cathedral Cliff provides an opportunity to examine the transition between the bedded pyroclastic rocks of an upper diatreme, and the non-bedded pyroclastic rocks of the subjacent lower diatreme. Bedded pyroclastic rocks occupy 49% of the mapped diatreme area, non-bedded pyroclastic rocks occupy 45%, and the remaining 6% consists of sedimentary megablocks. The bedded pyroclastic rocks range from coarse tuff to medium lapilli tuff, and from lithic to juvenile rich. They were emplaced during eruption at the bottom of the crater by pyroclastic density currents, pyroclastic fallout, and as ballistic bombs and blocks. As the eruption continued, they subsided into the diatreme to their current location. Bedding ranges from well-preserved (“continuous beds”) to partially destroyed (“broken beds”). -
