This speaks to the exasperated parent. When did your sweet pea become a massive sulky thing? Why does every argument go from 0-60 with no gear change in between? Why does your baby compare you with her friend’s better par- ents and make you feel like an overprotective, miserly clown? If it is actually her brain, then hey, it’s not your fault at all. Actually, it is about hearts and minds, and it is massively complicated – because we are. Being a parent at this stage means a constant negotiation between keeping them safe and letting them go. We are not good at letting go, and in my experience we are also very poor risk assessors. One of my kids didn’t nearly die from going to festivals very young, but from an accident on a “healthy” cycling holiday. Her sister also came close to death, not because she didn’t get fed organic carrots, but because she had meningitis. My worst fears nearly came true because of incidents I could not predict, so it’s not surpris- ing I became laissez-faire about the things I could. Why turn yourself into a flappy mess of worry to make them come home by 2am? What are they going to do then that they won’t have done by mid- night? What did you do yourself? If you say it multiple times, we just won’t feel When your child is little, they need you and you with people they don’t know, but I don’t know all of like it. Teenagers don’t need you or even their friends, so it’s not weird that they don’t know say stop them playing computer games or take away appear to like you, but they do need you to be semi- all of mine. Attired in traditional dazzling colourful costumes, the little ones with great enthusiasm and excitement went around exchanging greetings, wishing and embracing each other with a pure heart. The air was filled with euphoria, ecstasy and elation. A video presentation about the significance and virtues of Ramadan was displayed, thereby imparting the students the mes- sage of compassion, brotherhood, kindness and harmony. Students of the primary section were given a memorable experience on June 26, 2014. It was a day of giving — an effort was made to bring cheers to others by little deeds of kindness. Facebook under fire over ‘creepy’ secret study

acebook secretly manipulated the feelings of 700,000 users to understand “emotional con- Ftagion” in a study that prompted anger and forced the social network giant on the defensive. For one week in 2012, Facebook tampered with the algorithm used to place posts into users’ news feeds to study how this affected their mood, all without their explicit consent or knowledge. The researchers wanted to see if the number of positive or negative words in messages the users read determined whether they then posted positive or negative content in their status updates. The study, conducted by researchers affiliated with Facebook, Cornell University and the University of California at San Francisco, appeared in the June 17 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (www.pnas.org/content/111/24/8788. full.pdf). Results of the study spread — and with that anger and disbelief — when the online magazine Slate and The Atlantic website wrote about it on Saturday. “Emotional states can be transferred to others via Man or machine? It’s hard to tell emotional contagion, leading people to experience the same emotions without their awareness,” the study authors wrote. HYPER SUDOKU How to play Kakuro: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.
