The original texts include religious epics, Shakespeare’s plays, Bengali novels which were written pre- independence, and Hollywood films. This venture uses adaptation theory as well as postmodernist and postcolonial theories to examine how women and men are represented in the adaptations as well as how contemporary audience expectations help to create the identity of the characters in the films.

Habib Subhan Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University, India ABSTRACT: The postmodern era has observed a shift from what has so long been considered as fixed and static to nothing is constant or fixed like concepts. Taking such notion as the parameter postcolonial theorists, feminists, poststructuralists have tried to see and analyze various issues from different angles. Issues like identity, subjectivity, representation, authentic voices have got new perspectives. Like culture, body or sex is a site of conflict where individual’s identity is being contested endlessly. The ‘third gender’, which has long been marginalized or deprived of their identity, representation, true and authentic voice in the main stream of social and cultural milieu deserves the critical attention. ‘Third gender’ or the ‘People of In-between’ are considered not belonging to the general binary division of gender - male and female. Since long their plight is more like the ‘subaltern’. The Bollywood cinema has long been portraying the character of ‘third gender’ in various films. These films clearly reveal that their representation is biased, sensitive and stereotyping. The violation and violence, centered on issues of sex and body, is not only sexual violence in nature but it is a kind of denial of identity and voice in the society. They are judged and studied in terms of sexual behavior.

  • Copyright Piracy and the Indian Film Industry: a “Realist” Assessment
BANERJEE ARTICLE (Do Not Delete) 10/28/2016 3:03 PM COPYRIGHT PIRACY AND THE INDIAN FILM INDUSTRY: A “REALIST” ASSESSMENT ARPAN BANERJEE* Abstract In India, the academic discourse surrounding intellectual property (IP) has been marked by great skepticism. Global IP laws have been viewed as a Western imposition detrimental to national interests. In this paper, I will make the case for a “realist” approach to film piracy in India, i.e., an approach that is rooted in legal pragmatism and draws from the New Legal Realism (NLR) movement. I will suggest a rough template for such an approach, referring to seven broad elements: a) international relations realism; b) contextualization of IP; c) contextualization of copyright; d) the views and interests of the film industry (including creators); e) the working of the pirate economy; f) Permission is hereby granted for noncommercial reproduction of this Article in whole or in part for education or research purposes, including the making of multiple copies for classroom use, subject only to the condition that the name of the author, a complete citation, and this copyright notice and grant of permission be included in all copies. *Alexander von Humboldt Foundation German Chancellor’s Fellow, Bucerius Law School, Hamburg (2016-17); Assistant Professor and Executive Director, Centre for Intellectual Property and Technology Law, Jindal Global Law School, India (on research leave). A shorter version of this paper was awarded first prize at the 9th ATRIP Essay Competition for Young Researchers in Intellectual Property Law (2015), and presented at the 35th ATRIP Congress at Jagiellonian University, Krakow, 26-29 July, 2016.

  • The Variation in the Depiction of Queer Sexuality in India and the Question of Social Change
www.ijird.com April, 2016 Vol 5 Issue 5 ISSN 2278 – 0 211 (Online) The Variation in the Depiction of Queer Sexuality in India and the Question of Social Change Anee Bhattacharyya Research Scholar, Department of International Relations, Sikkim Central University, Sikkim, India Abstract: The sexual minorities dwelling in India are fettered by the discrimination, stigmatization and continuous subjugation of the hetronormative social structure. The role of section 377 of the IPC also acted a very important role in shaping the homophobic environment in the present Indian society. The politics of creative resistance that is developed by the Indian cinema not only brings to light the plight of queer lives and experiences, but it also constructs an alternative culture against the dominant hetronormative culture that redefines the present Indian society. Indian Queer movement, like many other new social movements, is based upon the idea of bringing a social change; a change in our understanding of sexuality not from the conventional stage but from a peripheral one. It strives to demolish the manicured walls of predominant paradigms that define the sexual universe of any common man. The main argument is that with the increasing popularity of queer themes in Indian cinema a positive change can be expected to occur within subjective self of Indian society. Keywords: Alternative sexuality, Indian cinema, social change, hetronormativity. 1. Introduction Sexuality as a subject of discussion is cautiously wrapped under the satin of heterosexual social structure since an extensive period now. The dominant understanding of sex and sexuality has, over the years, naturalized and universalized a set of ideas about sex.
