Gardens are privately owned and therefore Autumn opening times and days are at the discretion of the owner. Many of the village streets also display magnificent Autumn colours. See the Autumn Gardens List for more information. MARCH 2021 Sat 23 Jan – Sun Blue Mountains Portraits 2021 – Blue Mountains City Art Gallery, Cultural Centre, 30 Parke 7 Mar 2021 Street, Katoomba. Blue Mountains Portraits is the Cultural Centre’s annual celebration of the local community and its diverse members. The exhibiting artists portray the unique people that make up the cultural fabric of the Blue Mountains and tell the stories behind the person. Over forty artworks in a broad range of styles and media such as painting, photography, drawing, collage and mixed media will be exhibited together with a selection of local students’ work. In the exhibition Landscapes of Anxiety artist Gary Shinfield explores ideas based around the three geographical forms that dominate the landscape of the Blue Mountains – the plateau, the escarpment and the valley. These landforms are reinterpreted as formal, subjective and metaphoric images carrying the memory of recent and future events; drought, fires, flooding and human presence. Exercise your kids inquisitive minds and unlock creative problem solving skills in our KIDS CRE8 art workshops, designed to nourish creativity in a fun and relaxed space. Each 17 Feb – 18 Mar workshop will encourage kids to follow a creative process to develop their own, unique style 2021 across a range of art materials. Kids will learn about designers and artists as well as visit the gallery to take inspiration from current exhibitions. Ages 8-12 years. Time: Wednesday – 5 week term, 3.30pm – 5pm. This exhibition The People We Are, presents a selection of 2021 figurative, landscape and portrait works by emerging artists, Emily Lane, Sarah Frost and Mary Muss. Each artist explores the spiritual connection to the figure, the concepts of fixed and forming identity over time and the connections between place, story and memory. Malcolm Nash is a mixed media artist who loves exploring the landscape and the 2021 world around him. Nash’s creative work includes drawing, animation, painting, printmaking and photography. Beyond the Horizon examines the landscape as well as the world beyond what the artist sees. Nash explores a diverse range of imagery, many in black and white, from the autobiographical with scenes from the artist’s own home to landscapes which he has experienced. Into the Fold looks at finding harmony between old and new through the art of 2021 quilt-making. Traditional techniques of fabric manipulation are studied and reinterpreted in a modern context. Concentric circles of folded fabric, gathered puffs, stitched details, repetitive geometry and balanced asymmetry all explore, develop, and expand the boundaries, but always with a nod to the roots of the craft. Open Sessions is a 2021 free program for young people aged 13 - 18 wanting to share creative interests in an encouraging and inspiring environment. Make something at a drop-in activity station, chat with practicing artists, develop new ideas and meet other young creatives from your community. An evening of sweeping Americana blues, country and rockabilly. One of the Blue Mountains’ most talented singers, Brady is a frontwoman like few others: a vocal and emotional powerhouse whose intimate entanglement with each tale of love, lust or woe is captivatingly real. Be held captive by tales of train wrecks, funereal lullabies and love gone, gone, gone as they offer up an assemblage of nostalgia-laden, rockabilly, alt-country-noir originals in addition to a handful of obscure covers from the 20s to the 50s that pay homage to the roots of their original sound - tunes from artists like Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and the Kirby Sisters. Mark Wilkinson announces, ‘Hand Picked, Vol. 3’, the newest instalment in his much- loved acoustic series. Available worldwide from Friday February 12th, it continues the tradition of showcasing his songs laid bare, in their most raw and honest form. To celebrate the release Mark will be returning to the road, crossing open borders after a long absence, sharing songs from the new album along with many other favourites. Restrictions mean numbers will be limited, so book early to avoid disappointment. Time: Doors open 5pm. Entry: $30 plus booking fees online. John Haycraft is the watercolour tutor at The Royal Art Society; Mitchell School of Arts, Bathurst; Sturt Summer School, Mittagong; Paradise Courses, Fiji, among others. Stephen Fisher-King and his incredible band unpack Don McLean's much-loved classic American Pie, with the stories, facts and music of this astounding artist and his unforgettable songs including ‘Vincent (Starry Starry Night)’, ‘Castles In The Air’, ‘And I So Love You’ and of course, ‘American Pie’. Encounter this intoxicating music brew infused with Unza, Swing and Balkan Gypsy beats that is the widely acclaimed, Lolo Lovina. Created and fronted by Romani-Gypsy singer and actress Sarah Bedak, Lolo Lovina's music reflects the cosmopolitan identity of an artist who grew up with three native tongues and cultures. Time: 8pm. Entry: $35 + booking fee or choose any 3 or more concerts from the Wanderlust series to receive the special ticket price of $30 per concert. www.bluemountainstheatre.com.au/what-s-on/ Sat 13 Mar 2021 Six Foot Track Marathon – The Six Foot Track is a 45km trail stretching across the Blue Mountains from The Explorer’s Marked Tree near Katoomba to Jenolan Caves. The marathon, which started in 1984, follows the length of the entire trail and attracts over 850 entrants each year. Time: Various wave starts. See website for more details on registration. www.sixfoot.com Thurs 18 Mar – 1001: Circled - full circle - Kerrey Williams – Braemar House & Gallery, 104 Macquarie Road, Sun 11 April Springwood. This exhibition showcases works from artist Kerrey Williams’ creative journey, to 2021 create an artwork a day, sometimes more. Starting with an A5 visual diary and pencil, Kerrey began each work by drawing a circle with a diameter of 12cm. Using a black fineliner pen, each circle was then filled with a drawing, pattern or design, taking inspiration from events, experiences and things seen during the day or from imagination. After two years, Kerrey had created 830 circle drawings. Then 1000. Then just one more. The 1001st freehand circle drawing was drawn in the 16th book. Time: 10am – 4pm Thursday – Sunday.
