Miami City Ballet Presents Places Choreography by Claudia Schreier Videography by Alexander Iziliaev

MCB Dancers in Miami City Ballet’s World Premiere of Places by Claudia Schreier. In the face of COVID-19, Miami City Ballet has reflected on how to thoughtfully advance our mission in a rapidly-digitizing landscape and develop that work beyond what is required of the current, socially-distanced atmosphere. In response to this challenge, Artistic Director, Lourdes Lopez, curated a double bill of exciting digital programming. The first of the featured works commissioned internationally-renowned choreographer, Claudia Schreier, who developed a brand-new ballet on Miami City Ballet dancers. The ballet was accompanied by a custom musical composition by Miami-based composer, Jorge Mejia. These critically-acclaimed artists converged to record the work at the Adrienne Arsht Center, bringing innovation into living rooms across the country and highlighting Miami as a cultural hub.

Miami City Ballet was thrilled to share A Dance for Heroes, a World Premiere work commissioned by Artistic Director, Lourdes Lopez inspired by and dedicated to our front-line heroes and service providers of COVID-19. Lopez commissioned Durante Verzola, an accomplished MCB School alum, to choreograph the work. All rehearsals were conducted in accordance with social distancing, with each dancer working with Verzola via zoom from their respective homes, and then filmed one at a time in our studios. Each filming was edited to coalesce into a moving, entirely virtual choreographic sequence.

Miami City Ballet Ballet Studio

Miami City Ballet’s temporary studio space on the corner of Lincoln Road and Meridian Avenue.

In order to prepare for Miami City Ballet’s 2020/21 Season digital works in alignment with social distancing, The Company secured temporary studio space on Lincoln Road from July-September 2020. The MCB production team transformed an empty storefront into a professional-grade dance studio, outfitting the space with industry-standard floors and ballet barres. Coupled with lively, onsite music and interactive social media campaigns, this project inserted an element of artistic delight onto the sidewalks of Miami Beach, where residents were able to watch our dancers from the windows.
