R91 Police Records Skye SKYE & LOCHALSH ARCHIVE NORTHERN CONSTABULARY RECORDS, 1877 – 1994 The Rogue Money (Scotland) Act 1839 (2 & 3 Vict., c.65) empowered Counties to set up police forces and provided finance for the setting up of county police forces by the commissioners of supply. The Police (Scotland) Act 1857 (20 & 21 Vict., c.72) required all counties that had not already done so to establish and maintain a police force, and established the post of chief constable. County police forces were administered by a police committee made up of commissioners of supply, the lord lieutenant and the sheriff of the county. The Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889 (52 & 53 Vict., c.50) transferred the powers and duties of the police committees to standing joint committees composed of county councillors, commissioners of supply and the sheriff-principal. Under the 1929 Local Government (Scotland) Act (19 & 20 Geo. V, c.25) some police forces were merged. There have been further mergers since and today there are only six police forces in Scotland: Northern, Grampian, Tayside, Central Scotland, Lothian and Borders, and Strathclyde. The first Northern Constabulary was established in 1969 when the constabularies of Caithness, Orkney and Zetland amalgamated. The present Northern Constabulary was established in 1975 and covers the local authority regions of Highland, Orkney, Shetland, and the Western Isles. Highland area is made up of the former counties of Inverness, Ross and Cromarty, Nairn, Caithness, and Sutherland, each of which had its own police force. Some Highland burghs also had their own force. Included within Highland are parts of Argyllshire and Morayshire. Clouds B& B is about 4.5 miles north of UIG – Marked with a on the map, on the Trotternish Peninsula. Most people get to Clouds by travelling North on the A87 from Portree towards UIG. The Black route opposite. It is also possible to get to Clouds the long way round, through Culnacnoc, Brogaig and up and over the tip of the peninsula at Duntulm. The Red Route, opposite. This is ALL single track roads and takes significantly longer. This guide will explain both routes. How to get to Clouds from Portree via UIG Most people go this way. The start point for the black route is The Aros Centre just outside Portree. (Viewfield Road Portree, IV51 9EU) 1 – Head north towards A87 / Viewfield Road for 1 kilometre. As you approach the Junction bear LEFT towards UIG / A87. 2 - After half a mile you will come to a mini roundabout – The Co-Op supermarket will be to your right. Go straight over the mini-roundabout (2nd exit) and carry on the main road A87. Stay on the A87 all the way towards UIG. – approximately 14 miles. You will go through small villages such as Kensaleyre and Earlish. After Earlish take care of the next set of directions – You will NOT be going all the way into UIG village. Please carefully follow the steps below. You should still be on the A87 and you have come up the hill towards Earlish. As you come DOWN the hill you will be approaching Uig. The first phase was an analysis of existing recruitment and selection statistics from the eight Scottish police forces. Phase Two was a study of two police forces using a case study methodology: Identified issues were then circulated using the Delphi approach to all eight forces. There was a consensus that both society and the police are changing, and that disparate functional maps of a police officer's job have been developed. It was generally recognized that recruitment and selection are important, but time-consuming, aspects of police activity. Wide variations were found in practices across the eight forces, including the use of differential pass marks for the SET. Independent assessors have identified anomalies in the test indicating that it is both ambiguous and outdated in part, with differences in the readability of different versions that compromises comparability.
