Today is the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time as we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day. We come with thanks- giving “Remember(ing) Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David…”, as today’s second lec- tion reminds us. The gift of Jesus is cause for our joy and gratitude. His suffering, death and Resurrection have won for us salvation. Our faith is also a gift from God which leads us into communion with Him. Faith enables us to move beyond ourselves and into the world of expectation where God is waiting to surprise us with His blessings. Each of us is the re- cipients of His blessings as we consider that all we have is gift from God. The Lord is the One who endows us with time, talent and treasure so that we might praise Him for His goodness and use them for the building up of His Kingdom on earth.

Remembering God is unfortunately not on everyone’s priority list. Many times in life as we succeed and glean the fruits of bless- ing we just continue on our merry way forgetting to offer thanks to the ONE who is the source of all goodness. This forgetfulness is the result of selfishness and self-centeredness. In today’s Gospel the Lord Jesus makes note of such an attitude and calls His followers to give thanks because of their faith.

I give thanks to the Lord God who has inspired so many people to give offerings to renovate our church and to give memorials which beautify the Lord’s House. I am so grateful to the Alvarez Family for their donation of a ciborium (the vessel which holds the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle) which was given in memory of Ramon Alvarez. Thanks to the generosity of Art Valletta and his family the statue of Saint of Calcutta was purchased in memory of Regina (Jean) Valetta. The statue of has been given in memory of Martin Mackin by his son Martin and his wife Lee Ann. The restoration of the choir loft has been done in memory of Helen Lucas as was the offering of her daughter, Lee Ann Mackin and her husband Martin. All of the work done in the sanctuary and the donation of a new tabernacle is all possible because of the generosity of blessed memory, Mary Reynolds. I also would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Ferrone for their most generous gift for the renovation project. I know that all of these gifts are given in thanksgiving to God and in praise of His Holy Name.

This weekend the pastor, or his designate, is the homilist at all Masses which will focus on the thanksgiving which, I pray, will be visible in the support given to this year’s BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL. In today’s Gospel Acclamation we sing: “In all circumstances, give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.”

THANK YOU FOR YOUR OFFERINGS, FOR YOUR SUPPORT, FOR YOUR FAITH! God bless you!

ST. TERESA OF AVILA, Virgin and Doctor of the Church October 15-Patroness for Headache-Sufferers

St. Teresa of Avila was born on march 28, 1515, in Avila, Spain. Her mother died when she was twelve and her father placed her in a convent of Augustinian . When she returned home, she determined to enter religion. She became a in the Carmelite Convent of the Incarnation, near Avila, and made her profession in November, 1534.

Though for many years in the convent she led a god religious life, certain faults still adhered to her; but the moment of grace came at last and the noble hear of St. Teresa began to soar upward to perfection. Inspired by the Holy Spirit and acting under the direction of enlightened men, among whom as St. Peter of Alcantara, she undertook the superhuman task of reforming her Ordeer and restoring its primitive observance.

Assisted by St. , she succeeded in establishing the Reform of the Discalced Carmelites, bot both the brethren and the sister of her Order. Before her death in 1582, thirty-two monasteries of the Reformed Rule had been established, among which seventeen we5re convents of nuns. She was canonized in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV.

St. Teresa received great gifts from God. She also wrote many books on Mystical Theology considered by Gregory XY and Urban VII to be equal to those of a Doctor of the Church, According, on September 27, 1970, Pope Paul VI added her to the roll of the Doctor of the Church.

PRAYER: God, you raised up St. Teresa by Your Spirit so that she could manifest to the Church the way to perfection. Nourish us with the food of , and fir us with a desire for holiness. Amen.
