2017-2018 Visiting Team Guide Welcome to Fordham University Fordham, City’s Jesuit University, offers a distinctive educational experience rooted in the 450- year old Jesuit tradition of intellectual rigor and personal attention, set amid the dynamic rhythm of , the cultural and commercial capital of the world. Fordham was founded in 1841 by Rev. John Hughes, Archbishop of New York City, who turned the school over to the Jesuits in 1846, when the New York Legislature granted it a charter as a university. Fordham enrolls about 8,855 students in its four undergraduate colleges, in addition to 7,136 students in its six graduate and professional schools. Offering more than 65 majors, the required Common Core Curriculum ensures that students develop a range of knowledge that secures the quality and reputation of the Fordham bachelor’s degree. Fordham’s three residential campuses in New York City include the beautiful Rose Hill campus, located just steps away from the New York Botanical Gardens and Zoo, the Lincoln Center campus, in the heart of Manhattan’s artistic community and the scenic Tarrytown campus which overlooks the Hudson River. Fordham sponsors 22 men’s and women’s varsity sports teams, the are members of the NCAA Division I and compete in the Atlantic 10 Confer- ence in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track, women’s rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball and in the (NCAA I-FCS) for football. New York City In what Pope John Paul II called “the capital of the world”, many of the world’s most ambitious young men and women make their mark in the arts, communications, business, finance, educa- tion, publishing, science, social science, the law, and international politics. For more than 150 years, Fordham University has been a vital part of this exciting city, offering its students an education that is as stimulating as their surroundings, not to men- tion personally and professionally fulfilling. New York City offers Fordham students a campus without peer. Across the street from the

Rose Hill campus are two of the world’s most distinguished biological research facilities: the New York Botanical Garden and the Wildlife Con- servation Society, more commonly known as the Bronx Zoo. The Lincoln Center campus is right at home in its theatrical and artistic neighborhood on Manhattan’s upper west side. Fordham University Visiting Team Guide Athletic Facilities Jack Coffey Field (Football, Men’s and Women’s Soccer)

Jack Coffey, a name that is synony- mous with Fordham Athletics, served as Graduate Manager of Athletics for thirty- two years and varsity baseball coach for thirty-seven years before retiring from both posts in 1958. The baseball field was named in his honor in 1954 and when Fordham restored football in 1964, the football Rams also called Coffey Field home. The plaque dedicated that day in 1954 summed up what Jack Coffey meant to Fordham and to Fordham men. It hails the pensioner as “A true sportsman scholar and Christian gentleman.” In 2012, Jack Coffey Field got an- other new addition with a full-color video scoreboard, made by DakTronics. The new display has the ability to show video, in game statistics, and more. In summer 2014, a new playing surface was installed along with a new Daktronics sound system mounted on top of the scoreboard and 899 new chairback style chairs were added.

Rose Hill Gym (Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Volleyball)

Fordham University’s home court, the Rose Hill Gymnasium, is the oldest gym still being used by an NCAA Divi- sion I team. The 3,470 seat gym opened on January 16, 1925 for a game between Fordham and Boston College. The Rams took the opener 46-16 in a game refereed by one of the University’s most prominent alumni, “The Fordham Flash”, Frankie Frisch. The Gym was one of the largest on- campus facilities at the time it was built, earning the nickname “The Prairie” be- cause of its large floor space. The original configuration had no end zone stands and a seating capacity of 2,100 but several standing room crowds of 6,000 were reported in the late 1920’s. Since its opening in 1925, the gym has seen numer- ous renovations, adding new seating, scoreboards and public address systems. In the summer of 2013, the Cathedral of College Basketball added two behemoth state-of-the-art Daktronic video boards, one behind each basketball, that allowed the latest in video technology to be utilized at Fordham events, and in 2014 a new Daktronics PA system was installed. The arena has been in continuous use by Fordham’s basketball teams since it’s opening with the exception of the World War II years, when it was used for a barracks. The Rose Hill Gym has been the site of many legendary college and high school basketball games including Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s final high school game and the 1988 Tolentine-Archbishop Molloy Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Championship game, billed by the New York Newsday as the “Best High School Game of the 80’s”. The Rose Hill Gym continues to host the CHSAA Championships annually. Fordham University Visiting Team Guide Athletic Facilities Houlihan Park (Baseball)

The Fordham Baseball Field took on a new look as the playing surface was replaced with Fieldturf, one of the top artificial surfaces in the world. This project is part of a three-prong effort to improve all athletic fields at Fordham. The new field features Fieldturf along with new lights, new baseball dugouts and a new for baseball. In addition to hosting the football and baseball Rams, the newly surfaced Jack Coffey Field also hosts the men’s and women’s soccer teams and is available for the intramural and club sports programs. In August 2005, Jim Houlihan (CBA ’74) and his family pledged $1 million to Fordham University’s baseball program to name the newly renovated baseball complex Houlihan Park at Jack Coffey Field.

Bahoshy Softball Field (Softball)

Just before the beginning of the 2012 Fordham softball season, the home of the Rams underwent a major facelift, giving the two-time Atlantic 10 Champions one of the top facilities in the conference. A brand new grandstand and backstop behind home plate was installed, giving the Fordham faithful a great view to watch their Rams, along with new in-ground dugouts for the teams, as well as a climate- controlled press box. A second batting cage and bullpen area were also added in. Following the Rams’ second Atlantic 10 title in 2013, the infield playing surface and outfield FieldTurfTM at the Bahoshy Softball Complex, while in 2016 a new outfiedl fence was installed with action shots of former Rams greats.

Vincent T. Lombardi Memorial Center (Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track & Field, Men’s Squash)

Built in 1976, the recreational facility is named in honor of Vincent Lombardi, FC ’37, who was a trustee and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It con- tains a 220-yard running track, six tennis courts, a 38-meter, eight-lane swimming pool, competition diving facilities, weight rooms, four racquetball/squash courts, locker rooms, and sauna. In the summer of 2015, the fieldhouse underwent a renovation the installation of a new running track, a new wood practice court and three multi-purpose court as well as the installation of new lighting and ventilation along with a new paint job. Fordham University Visiting Team Guide Athletic Facilities Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatics Center (Swimming & Water Polo)

Located in the Vincent T. Lombardi Memorial Center, named for one of Ford- ham’s most famous alumni, is the Colonel Francis B. Messmore Aquatics Center, home of the Fordham Swimming and Diving and Water Polo programs. The 40-meter pool has eight lanes and adjust- able bulkheads for competition by either meters or yards. Diving facilities include two three meter boards, two one meter boards and a trampoline with an overhead spotting rig. The pool also features a dry land exercise deck area, and the diving well allows for separate areas for instruc- tion and warming up. In addition, the Messmore Pool has an eight-lane scoreboard with a Colorado Timing system, and seating for 1,000.

Hawthorn/Rooney Tennis Courts (Men’s and Women’s Tennis)

Named for long-time head men’s ten- nis and squash coach Bob Hawthorn and former women’s head tennis coach John Rooney, the Hawthorn Rooney Courts are the home for the men’s and women’s tennis squads. The complex features six courts along with a tennis house with locker rooms. The courts were renovated in the summer of 2016 with the installation of a new playing surface.
