10 2005 Dayton Volleyball 2005 Dayton Volleyball 11 The Home of Dayton Volleyball The Thomas J. Frericks Athletic and Convocation Center is home to the Flyer volleyball team. The Frericks Center is the third- largest volleyball-only facility in college volleyball. Its 5,000 seat capacity is only behind Arkansas' Barnhill Arena (9,000) and Murray State's Cutchin Fieldhouse (5,500). The venue served as host of the 1997, 2000 and 2001 Atlantic 10 Volleyball Cham- pionships. UD plays and practices on a Sport Court vol- leyball floor. UD's red and blue floor that is marked just for volleyball competition is the same surface used by the U.S. National team. Many of the nation's top 20 college volleyball programs play on Sport Court floors, and it is the official court of the men's and women's NCAA champion- ships, and the USA Volleyball nationals. Following a recent renovation, the Frericks Center unveiled a volleyball-specific scoreboard, new fan seating and an environmental graphics package including championship banners.

12 2005 Dayton Volleyball •Basketball The crown jewel of UD’s superb athletic facilities, the UD Arena is regarded as one of the nation’s best college venues. A $13.1 million renovation was completed in 2002 which updated the arena’s concourses, facades, concessions and restrooms and added valuable premium seating, clubs and retail space. Both the new Time Warner Cable Flight Deck and a renovated Boesch Lounge, along with the accompanying loge seats and suites at each end, offer a perspective on the game unlike any other. A regular stop for the NCAA Tournament, UD Arena has hosted 65 NCAA postseason games since opening in 1969 -- the third-most among active venues and fourth-most all-time. UD will host the 2006 NCAA Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds, the Opening Round Game through 2010 and a 2007 NCAA Women’s Basketball Regional.

This time, Dayton wouldn’t be denied as they didn’t lose a single game in sweeping George Washington and Temple, 3-0 and 3-0, for the A-10’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Once in the NCAA Tournament, Horsmon picked up his first-ever NCAA tourney win as Dayton bested a favored Michigan State team on its home floor in front of 4,000 stunned Spartan fans. The Flyers jumped out to an early 2-0 game lead in the match, and after the Spartans clawed back into it, the Flyers dominated the fifth game to knock off the Spartans and advance to the Round of 32. Despite the Second Round loss to No. 9 Nebraska, the Flyers’ 2003 season goes down as the best in their history. By season’s end, UD was ranked 28th in the RPI Report and was receiving votes in the AVCA/USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll.

The Flyers did not suffer a let down in Horsmon’s sophomore season at Dayton. In fact, UD won its third-ever Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship after finishing 2004 with a 23-9 overall record and a 12-2 mark in A-10 play. Dayton entered the A-10 Tournament as the top seed, swept host Duquesne and beat arch-rival Xavier, 3-1 en route to its second automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Although Dayton would lose in the First Round to NCAA Regional Finalist Ohio State, UD became the first team in five years to repeat as Atlantic 10 Tournament Champion.

Horsmon came to UD after four seasons as head women’s volleyball coach at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh, PA. In his four seasons there, the Colonials’ successes were unprecedented, including three Northeast Conference regular season championships (1999, 2001, 2002) and four Northeast Conference Tournament championships (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002). Horsmon guided Robert Morris to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure, and a 97-50 overall record. He was named Northeast Conference Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2002.
