Market Commentary
Indonesia reported its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) first quarter of 2021 was -0.74% a year, an increase compared to the previous quarter of -2.19% a year. In May, Indonesia reported inflation of 0.32% in a month or 1.68% in a year. Food and transportation are the main drivers of inflation due to the euphoria of Eid. Indonesia applied movement restrictions for inter-city travel during the Eid holiday. New cases of COVID-19 could still be handled with daily new cases of 5,000 cases, the infection rate dropping to 9% nationally and 3% for Jakarta. However, the impact of the Eid holiday can be seen in early June. At the end of May, the Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) closed down -0.8% in a month. There was an inflow of IDR 3.5 trillion of foreign investors in the stock market in May.
