Descendants of Jacob Christ and Mary Bortsfield

(1) JACOB CHRIST was born 26 Feb 1791,1 probably in Lancaster County, Penn. (It is likely that he was the son of Jacob Christ Jr., who was born about 1756 in Manor Township, Lancaster Co., the son of Jacob and Anna Kauffman Christ.2) He is probably the Jacob Christ who appears on the census in Manor Township starting in 1820.3 Jacob's wife was MARY BORTSFIELD, or Bortzfield. She was born 27 Dec 1790, probably in Lancaster Co. She was the daughter of Jacob Bortzfield of Manor Township who is buried in the Witmer Cemetery, 2 1/2 miles west of Millersville.4 Jacob Christ died in May 1848.5 Probate records mention sons Jacob, Samuel, John, Benjamin and Amos, and daughters Susan (wife of Henry Kahler), and Mary. Jacob Pickel was appointed guardian of Amos. The same records show he had two houses in what was then called "Millerstown."6 His wife Mary died 4 Feb 1844. The inscription on her gravestone reads, in part, "I leave this world without a tear/Save for my friends I have so dear." The rest of the inscription is unreadable, as the gravestone is sunken into the earth.7 They are buried in the graveyard of what is now the Grace United Methodist Church, in Millersville.

Gravestone of Jacob Christ

1Gravestone in graveyard of Grace United Methodist Church, Millersville, Penn. 2Birth of Jacob Christ Jr. from the LDS (Mormon) International Genealogical Index (IGI). 31820 U.S. Census, Index. In 1820 and 1830 there is also a in Manor Township. John was undoubtedly a relative, perhaps a brother. 4 According to a card in the card file at the Mennonite Historical Society Library in Lancaster, Penn. He was born June 14, 1766 and died June 20, 1842. His wife Magdalena, born Nov. 22, 1779 and died May 4, 1850, would have been too young to have been Mary Bortsfield's mother. However, she may have been Jacob's second wife 5Gravestone, Grace United Methodist Church. 6Probate records, photocopy from Lancaster Co. Courthouse. (Book N, Vol. 1, p. 27.) The houses were (1) a 1 1/2 story house with 10 acres of land in "Millerstown," and (2) a two story brick dwelling house with 9 1/2 acres, also in "Millerstown." 7Gravestone. 1 A. H. Second Generation

(2) JACOB CHRIST JR. was born Sep 1816,9 in Millersville. He died 18 Dec 1905,10 in Millersville. He married MARY ANN BARR, 24 Sep 1840.11 She was born 24 Sep 1818 in Maytown, Lancaster Co., and was the daughter of Owen Barr. She died 24 Jul 1910 in Manor Township, and is buried in the “Evangelical Cemetery” in Millersville.12 Jacob is listed as a cooper, living in Manor Township, Millersville, on the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census. In 1850 another cooper lived with the family.13 On the 1900 census, Mary is listed as the mother of six children, only one living. An obituary states that Jacob was a lifelong resident of Millersville and was a member of the United Evangelical Church there. He learned coopering from his father.14 Another obituary says he “sustained an apoplectic stroke, which hastened his death. The deceased was born and lived all his life in Millersville. He had a kindly disposition and was held in high esteem by a host of friends.”15 Mary’s obituary says she was known as “Mother Christ,” and was an active member of the Grace United Evangelical congregation of Millersville.16

91900 census. He and his wife lived in Millersville in 1900. However his obituary states that he had turned 90 in Sept. 1905, indicating a birth year of 1815. 10 Obituary, cited below. No gravestone found in findagrave.com. 11Marriages and Deaths From Newspapers of Lancaster Co. PA, 1831-1840, p. 63. 12 Death certificate, ancestry.com. KLINE, probably in about 1838 or 1839.19 She was born 22 May 1817, and is said to have been the daughter of Christian Kline and Elizabeth Scholtey.20 She died 10 Mar 1905. She is also buried in the Creswell Mennonite Cemetery.21 Jacob is listed as living in Manor Township, Millersville, on the 1850, 1860, 1870 and census, being described as a farmer in 1860 and farm hand in 1870. In 1880 he lived in the Indiantown District of Lancaster County, and is called a laborer.22 On the 1900 census, his widow Sophia lived in Manor Township with her daughter Fanny Shellenberger. The census record states she was the mother of four children, three living. Sophia’s obituary says “she suffered quite a while from dropsy. She was a member of the Dunkard Church…”23

(4) SUSANNA (“SUSAN”) CHRIST was born 22 Nov 181827 in Lancaster Co. She married HENRY KAHLER, by about 1840.28 He was born 12 Sep 1812.29 His mother was Elizabeth (-----) Kahler, born in about 1784 (see below). His father’s name is not known. He was probably the brother of George W. Kahler, born in about 1820, who lived next to him in 1880. According to the 1880 census, Henry’s parents were both born in Pennsylvania.

19 Based on the birth of their first child. 20 According to an ancestry.com family tree. 21 Records of Creswell Mennonite Cemetery. 22 Census records online at ancestry.com. On the 1880 census his father’s birthplace is given as “Hesse.” 23 Lancaster Semi Weekly New Era, 22 Mar 1905. 24 Some family trees on ancestry.com state that all of the children of John and Sophia had “Kline” as their middle name. This is quite possible but I cannot state with certainty. 25 Found on 1850 and 1860 census. According to kimberlyajohnson family tree on ancestry, she died in 1922, a single woman. However I am skeptical since she is not seen on any census records after 1860 and no death record is found, even though ancestry has Pennsylvania death records after 1906. 26 No photograph is given, but the note is “dau/o John & Sophia.” 27 There is no photo on findagrave.com, but billiongraves has a photo. 28 Estimate based on the year of birth of their first child. 29 There is no photo on findagrave.com, but billiongraves has a photo. 4 A. On the 1850 census, Henry Kahler, 37, is listed as a laborer, with Susan, 32, and children Henry, 9, Elizabeth, Mary, 5, and Adaline, 1. Living next door was Elizabeth Kahler, 66, apparently his mother. In 1860 the family lived in Millersville, with two children added, Jacob, and George W. Susan died 13 Jan 1892; George died about a month later, on 19 Feb 1892, both probably dying in Millersville, PA.30 They are buried in the Grace United Methodist Church cemetery.31

(5) SAMUEL B. CHRIST was born 17 Dec 1820,32 undoubtedly in Lancaster Co. He married MARY GAMBER in about 1845.33 She was born in 26 Oct 1824, in Lancaster Co.,34 the daughter of Nicholas Gamber and Elizabeth Dickle.35 On the 1850, Samuel and his family lived in Manor Township, where he is listed as a shoemaker. Besides his wife and daughter Serena, two others are listed with him: a 20 year old shoemaker named Michael Shea (?)36 and 10-year-old Catherine Gamber, perhaps a sister of Mary’s. In 1860, in Manor township, the family is listed as follows: Samuel Christ, 36, shoemaker; Mary 35; Lavina 13; Mary 7 and Franklin Lyne 4. “Lavina” must refer to Serena. It is not clear who Franklin was. In 1870 he is listed as “without occupation,” with wife Mary and daughter “Sarena” who was then a 22 year old teacher, and Anna 12, who, from the 1880 census, is shown to have been his niece.37 In 1880 Samuel is again listed as a shoemaker. In 1900, Samuel and Mary lived in Manor Township with their daughter Serena and her husband J. R. Wallick.

In 1880 she was 21, and her occupation was “strips tobacco” 5 A. H. Gilbertson 4 Jan 2021

Samuel died 20 Nov 1901,38 in Millersville. Mary died 5 Jan 1910 in Manor Township, at age 85.39 They are both buried in the cemetery of the Grace United Methodist Church, in Millersville.

Children:

26. SERENA CHRIST, b. 17 May 1847; d. 26 Apr 1934; m. JABEZ R. WALLICK

27. MARY CHRIST, b. about 1853; probably died before 1870 and before 190040

(6) REV. BENJAMIN CRIST41 was born 4 Apr 1825. He had two wives, the first named MIRIAM, and the second MARY JANE DOAK. The career of Rev. Benjamin Crist is somewhat difficult to follow, as he moved from place to place. He is not found on the federal census for the years 1850, 1860 or 1870. However, on the 1857 Minnesota state census, he is listed in Chisago, MN, as clergyman, age 31, born in Pennsylvania, with wife Miriam, 29, also born in PA, and son James, 2, born in Minn. According to the History of Methodism in Minnesota, “The conference of 1861 appointed Benjamin Crist to the Farmington Circuit. During the conference year, Brother Crist’s wife and child died within one week of each other, with diphtheria. Alone and desolate the preacher traveled his circuit and kept up his appointments in East Grove, Eureka, Farmington and Vermillion.”42 He had come to Minnesota as early as 1854, being called a “pioneer Methodist minister and evangelical itinerant missionary…whose appointments at wide intervals of distance and four weeks of time, were met through sunshine and storm, with the regularity of a through express train.”43 In 1880, Benjamin Crist, M. E. preacher, 51 years of age, lived in Clinton, Anderson Co., Tenn., with 40-year-old wife Mary J. His place of birth is listed as Pennsylvania. No children are listed with them. In 1888 he is listed in the minutes of the annual conference of the Methodist Episcopal church as being in the Greenville Circuit (Tenn.).44 According to an obituary, he was active in the ministry for 60 years, and was a “pioneer circuit rider, both in Minnesota and Tennessee.” “Rev. Christ walked long distances to meet important appointments, and no sacrifice was too great for him to make for the good of his chosen work.”45

38 Gravestone. 39 The cause of death was chronic interstitial nephritis. 40 She is not listed with the family on the 1870 or 1880 census; in 1900 Mary (Gamber) Christ is listed as having had 2 children, 1 living. 41 That he was a minister is seen from the obituary of his brother Amos B. Christ, also on the 1900 census he is listed as a retired minister 42 Chauncey Hobart, The History of Methodism in Minnesota (1887), p 162. 43 Charles S. Bryant, History of Fillmore County, Minnesota (1882), p. 601. 44 Minutes of the Annual Conferences of the Methodist Episcopal Church, vol. 22, found on google books. 45 Lancaster New Era, 10 Jan 1916. 6 A. H. Gilbertson 4 Jan 2021

By 1900, Benjamin had retired from the ministry and returned to Lancaster County, where he is listed on the 1900 and 1910 census. He died 8 Jan 1916 in the Neffsville Brethren Home, Lancaster county. His occupation is listed as “Retired minister.” He is buried in the Grace United Methodist Church cemetery.46

Child:

28. JAMES CRIST, b. about 1855; d. 1861, of diphtheria

(8) AMOS B. CHRIST was born 30 Nov 1827, in Lancaster Co.47 He was married twice. He married first, by 1850, CATHERINE KNEISLEY, the daughter of Michael Kneisley and Catherine Ripley. She must have died before 1860. At that time, Amos was a farmhand who lived with a Mr. Harnish.48 Two of Amos' children, Michael and Catherine, lived with their Kneisley grandparents in 1860. 49 Amos' second wife, HANNAH CATHERINE JACKSON,50 was born 11 Dec 1845 and died 18 Apr 1896.51 In 1860, she (apparently) lived in Manor Twp. with a minister, John Stamon. It is possible that she was an orphan.52 The death certificate of Susan (Christ) McDonnell states that she was Catherine H. Jackson, born in Rochester, N.Y. Interestingly, during 1876-80, there appears in the Rochester City directory, “Hannah C. Christ, widow of Amos.” Although Amos was still living, this could be the correct Hannah C. Christ. Amos Christ is not a common name, and there are no others known to have had a wife named Hannah. None are found in prior Rochester city directories. It seems possible that Hannah and Amos could have been separated, either due to marital difficulties or financial difficulties, and she may have called herself a widow to avoid embarrassment. Regardless, something seems to have split apart the family by 1880, because all the children are living in other households as servants, and Amos is found living by himself in Lancaster.

His age is incorrectly listed as 30, but it appears certain this is the right Amos Christ. 491860 census, p. 433. Michael Kniesley 56; Catherine 57; Susan A., 25; Michael, 23; John, 25; Michael Christ, 9; Catherine Christ, 6. 50The death certificate of Susan (Christ) McDonnell calls her Catherine H. Jackson, born in Rochester, NY. 51Gravestone, Grace United Methodist Church. Efforts to find her parents have been unsuccessful. According to the 1870 census, she was born in Pennsylvania. 521860 Census, p. 434. John Stamon, "minister U.B.", 59; Ann, 54; Abraham, 25; Bauchman(?), 17; Convall (?) Gassner, 30; Emanuel Rockeffnous, 16; Hannah Jackson, 14; Julia Hoffman, 16; Charles Dandre(?), 14. The fact that this minister's family had four unrelated teenagers makes one believe that perhaps he had adopted them, or was taking care of them in some way. 7 A. H. Gilbertson 4 Jan 2021

Hannah’s obituary states:

Mrs. Hannah Christ, wife of Amos Christ, died on Tuesday at her home on Manor Street, after a lingering illness. Deceased was fifty-two years old. Mrs. Christ was a member of the Church of God, and was a most estimable woman. A husband and six children survive. The funeral was held on Thursday afternoon at one o'clock; interment at Millersville.”

Although daughter Susan is said to have been born in Quarryville, the family appears never to have lived there. Amos and Hannah and family are listed in Manor Township, near Millersville, on the 1870 census. His occupation is given as a farmer.53 It is Amos Christ likely that he is the Amos Christ listed in an 1875-76 directory of Lancaster County as living in Washington Borough.54 An 1884 Lancaster city directory lists him as a “buyer” living at 133 Concord Al. In 1888 he is listed as a tobacco packer at 556 Lafayette. He is probably the Amos B. Christ, laborer, living at 618 Fifth Street in 1894.55 During his later years he lived with son Harry in Letort.56 Amos died December 25, 1907. His obituary reads: Amos Christ, a well-known farmer of Manor township, died on Christmas Day from gangrene, which resulted from cutting an ingrown toe nail. Deceased was eighty years old. He made his home with his son, Harry, of Letort. He resided in the township all of his life with the exception of a few years spent in this city, during which time he engaged in tobacco buying. He was twice married and the children surviving, to his first wife, are: Michael, of Letort; Mary, of Millersville; Mrs. Kate Lipp. By his second wife the surviving children are, Mrs. Laura Ehrhart and Harry, of Letort; Susan, of Philadelphia, Hattie, of New York; William, of Lancaster. Rev. Benjamin Christ, of Millersville, is a surviving brother. The funeral will be held to-morrow morning at ten o'clock at the Evangelical Church, Millersville, interment in the adjoining cemetery57

531870 U. S. Census, p. 530. The family consisted of: Amos, 40; Hannah, 27; Mary, 17, Henry, 8; Amos, 6; Susan, 2; and Annie, 3 months. Also with the family was Susan Kneisley, 35, and her children Lizzie, 4, and John, 2. . Susan was Amos' first wife's sister. She was born Dec. 31, 1833, and died Jan. 16, 1920. In 1900 she lived with her brother Michael Kniesley. She was unmarried. She is buried in the same plot as Michael K. Christ, with a gravestone that says "Aunt." 54Lancaster Legacy, Vol. 5, #4 (Dec. 1988), p. 33. 55City directories on microfilm at Library of Congress. In all three directories he is listed as Amos B. Christ. 56Obituary. 57Obituary. 8 A. H. Gilbertson 4 Jan 2021

His death certificate lists his occupation as "laborer."58 Both Amos and his wife are buried in the graveyard in back of what is now the Grace United Methodist Church in Millersville. (17) MARY CHRIST was born 28 Jul 1844, in Lancaster County.64 Some sources give her middle name as Kline. She died 31 Mar 1922, in Manor Township. She apparently married three times, first, JOHN BRENNEMAN;65 second, CHRISTIAN ESHLEMAN, and third RUDOLPH KAUFFMAN. The evidence for her three marriages is as follows: her death certificate calls her Mary Kauffman, daughter of John Christ and Sophia “Lines.” This is assumed to be an error for Sophia Kline, wife of John Christ. The informant on her death certificate was Mazie Eshleman. Her husband’s name is not given. She was buried in Creswell Evangelical Cemetery.66 A search of census records found the following: On the 1900 census: Kauffman, Rudolph, b. Aug 1833; farm laborer, married (crossed out 45) 34 years , Mary C., wife, b. Jul 1844, married 34 years, mother of 6 children, all living Eshleman, Sophia, step-daughter, b. Dec 1880 Brenneman, Isaiah, step-son, b. Jun 1866

And, on the 1880 census: Eshleman, Christian, 52 years old, shoe maker , Mary, wife, 39

Along with several children, including Isaiah, 14; Mary 8, Elmer 5; Clara 3, and Ella, 1. Two older children, Aaron, 19, and Christian, 17, were Christian’s children by his first marriage. Using death records, it is found that Clara’s mother was Mary Christ. The oldest of the children listed in 1880 were Christian’s children by a prior marriage. Rudolph H Kauffman died 9 Mar 1907 in Manor Township. He is buried in the Highville U. B. Cemetery. Mary was buried with her second husband Christian Eshleman in the Creswell Cemetery. Mary’s obituary only mentions two marriages, but does list her son Isaiah Brenneman. Was he born out of wedlock? Children:

38. ISAIAH BRENNEMAN, b. 24 Jun 1866; d. 9 Jul 1930, Lancaster; unmarried; bur. Creswell Cem. According to his death certificate he was a laborer. No obit found.
