April 21, 2020 | Museum From Home Emails SALVADOR DALÍ AND

BACKSTORY Over eight months from 1945-46, Salvador Dalí and , a Disney studio artist, storyboarded the film . However, they never finished for a few different reasons. In 1999, Roy E. Disney found Destino while working on 2000 and enlisted a team of 25 animators at Walt Disney Studios to decipher Dalí and Hench's storyboards along with the help of journals from Dalí's wife and Hench himself. The film was released in 2003 with the original footage and some additional computer animation.

WHAT'S DESTINO ABOUT?! It's the story of Chronos (Greek God of Time) and his love for a mortal woman named Dahlia. Dahlia dances through surreal scenery inspired by Dalí's paintings. There is no dialogue, just music performed by Mexican songwriter Armando Dominguez and sung by Dora Luz. Luz also performed You Belong to My Heart to in Disney’s seventh animated feature film, The Three Caballero’s (1944).

Below is a documentary and 2 podcasts about the film and the relationship between the men. I’ve also included the film itself:

• FILM: Destino (Time 6:31) Destino can also be found on Disney+ as of January 2020 and on the 2010 DVD Fantasia & Special Edition.

Released by on June 2, 2003 at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in Annecy, . In 2004, it appeared in theaters before The Triplets of Belleville and Calendar Girls. Destino is a short film (production originally began in 1945) collaboration between American animator Walt Disney and Spanish painter Salvador Dalí.

The film was nominated for the Best Animated Short Film at the in 2003. It was also a part of The . The Animation Shows of Shows is an annual traveling show that brings the year’s best shorts, selected from festival around the world, to industry professionals who might otherwise have an opportunity to see them.

Is there an artist today you’d like to see work in animation?
