The mining plan for the lease area was approved by the Indian bureau of mines vide letter No. TN/SLM/MP/MG&S.ST-1071-MDS dated 06.03.1998. As per the recent MMDR Amendment Act 2015, the validity of the mining lease is extended upto 26.03.2020. Hence, the Review of Mining Plan under Rule 17(1) of MCR, 2016 has been prepared and submitted. In this Review of Mining Plan period is 2017- 2018 to 2021-2022.     ISSN (Online) - 2349-8846 Drought Mitigation in Tamil Nadu S RAJENDRAN Vol. 49, Issue No. 25, 21 Jun, 2014 S Rajendran ([email protected]) is with the Department of Economics, Periyar University, Salem, Tamil Nadu. Sustained and focused efforts have to be made by the Tamil Nadu state government to provide relief and rehabilitation to the drought affected people of the state. Due to the failure of the north-east monsoon in December 2013, Tamil Nadu is witnessing drought like conditions this year, leading to poor agricultural productivity, rural distress, acute shortage of drinking water and fodder. For three consecutive years 2011, 2012 and 2013, the state has been reeling under drought, having received below normal rainfall. This summer (2014), the situation is pretty alarming in the state. It is facing an acute drinking water crisis, leading to protests all over the state. Also the farmers’ associations and left parties have been demanding that the government declares the state as drought-hit. The state administration is finding it difficult to tackle the situation. The state government has sanctioned Rs 681 crores in the budget 2014-2015 to address the drinking water problem alone. The chief secretary of the state convened a district collectors’ meeting with the secretaries of finance and revenue during the first week of May 2014 to take stock of water requirements and other needs. Subsequently, the chief minister also convened a meeting with senior ministers and officials to ensure the supply of drinking water. Unless the water scarcity is addressed on a war footing, a serious drinking water crisis is imminent in the state.

Hence, proper assessment of groundwater potential and management practices are the needs of the day. Establishing relationship between remote sensing data and hydrologic phenomenon can maximize the efficiency of water resources development projects. Present study focuses on groundwater potential assessment in Salem district, Tamil Nadu to investigate groundwater resource potential. At the same, all thematic layers important from ground water occurrence and movement point of view were digitized and integrated in the GIS environment. The weights of different parameters/themes were computed using weighed index overlay analysis (WIOA), analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy logic technique. Through this integrated GIS analysis, groundwater prospect map of the study area was prepared qualitatively. Field verification at observation wells was used to verify identified potential zones and depth of water measured at observation wells. Generated map from weighed overlay using AHP performed very well in predicting the groundwater surface and hence this methodology proves to be a promising tool for future. 1. Out of 6607 ground water assessment units (Blocks/ mandals / taluks etc.), 1071 units are over-exploited and 914 units are critical. These units have withdrawal of ground water is more than the recharge (over exploited) and more 90% 7 less than 100% of recharge (Critical). Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) has taken up largest Aquifer mapping endeavour in the world, targeting total mapable area of country ~ 23.25 lakh sq. km with a vertical extent of 300 m in soft rock area and 200 m in hard rock area.
