Thate Received: 30 March 2016; Accepted: 12 August 2016; Published: 19 August 2016 Abstract: The archives of African American jazz musicians demonstrate rich sites for studying expressions of religious belief and daily religious practice in public and private arenas, in professional and personal capacities. Highlighting print material from the archives of Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington (1899–1974) and Mary Lou Williams (1910–1981), this article examines the ways that these musicians worked to articulate their beliefs in print and to make meaning of their routine practices. Ellington and Williams produced written records of their aspirations for non-clerical religious authority and leadership, novel notions of religious community, and conceptions of quotidian writing tasks as practices with devotional value in the middle decades of the twentieth century. In preparation for his Sacred Concert tours of American and Western European religious congregations, Ellington theologized about the nature of God and the proper language to address God through private hotel stationery. Following her conversion to Roman Catholicism, Williams managed a Harlem thrift shop and worked to create the Bel Canto Foundation for musicians struggling with substance abuse and unemployment. This study of the religious subjectivity of African Americans with status as race representatives employs archival historical methods in the effort to vividly approximate complex religious interiority. Pilot Season by Kelly Cousineau An undergraduate honorsrequirements thesis submitted for the degree in partial of fulfillment of the Bachelor of Arts in University Honors and Film Thesis Adviser William Tate Portland State University 2014 Abstract In the 1930s, two historical figures pioneered the cinematic movement into color technology and theory: Technicolor CEO Herbert Kalmus and Color Director Natalie Kalmus. Through strict licensing policies and creative branding, the husband-and-wife duo led Technicolor in the aesthetic revolution of colorizing Hollywood. However, Technicolor's enormous success, beginning in 1938 with The Wizard of Oz, followed decades of duress on the company. Studios had been reluctant to adopt color due to its high costs and Natalie's commanding presence on set represented a threat to those within the industry who demanded creative license. The discrimination that Natalie faced, while undoubtedly linked to her gender, was more systemically linked to her symbolic representation of Technicolor itself and its transformation of the industry from one based on black-and-white photography to a highly sanctioned world of color photography. -

Biographical Description for The HistoryMakers® Video Oral History with Terence Blanchard PERSON Blanchard, Terence Alternative Names: Terence Blanchard; Life Dates: March 13, 1962- Place of Birth: New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Work: New Orleans, LA Occupations: Trumpet Player; Music Composer Biographical Note Jazz trumpeter and composer Terence Oliver Blanchard was born on March 13, 1962 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Wilhelmina and Joseph Oliver Blanchard. Blanchard began playing piano at the age of five, but switched to trumpet three years later. While in high school, he took extracurricular classes at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. From 1980 to 1982, Blanchard studied at Rutgers University in New Jersey and toured with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. In 1982, Blanchard replaced trumpeter Wynton Marsalis in Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, where he served as musical director until 1986. He also co- led a quintet with saxophonist Donald Harrison in the 1980s, recording five albums between 1984 and 1988. In 1991, Blanchard recorded and released his self-titled debut album for Columbia Records, which reached third on the Billboard Jazz Charts. He also composed musical scores for Spike Lee’s films, beginning with 1991’s Jungle Fever, and has written the score for every Spike Lee film since including Malcolm X, Clockers, Summer of Sam, 25th Hour, Inside Man, and Miracle At St. Anna’s. In 2006, he composed the score for Lee's four-hour Hurricane Katrina documentary for HBO entitled When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. Blanchard also composed for other directors, including Leon Ichaso, Ron Shelton, Kasi Lemmons and George Lucas. -

Eli Yamin Celebrates the Dave Brubeck Quartet Curriculum Guide Eli Yamin Celebrates the Dave Brubeck Quartet Overview These six videos are presented and performed by jazz and blues pianist, composer, singer, producer and educator Eli Yamin. The videos vary in length from 3 to 12 minutes. The title of the series aptly denotes the content because Eli Yamin and his group of master musicians truly do “celebrate” 5 songs of Dave Brubeck. Each video examines and performs a specific song and its unique qualities. Although the focus is always the music, the lessons easily apply to literacy and language arts standards, grades 6-12. The amount of time spent on the lessons can be decided by the teachers, depending on students’ interest, needs, and planning. Below is a brief summary of the content of each video to help teachers decide which best suits their curriculum. It is recommended that all the videos be studied in order to provide a full scope of Brubeck’s music, but the lessons and videos can each stand alone. Dave Brubeck Brief Background Dave Brubeck was a famous jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader who lived from 1920 to 2012. He founded the Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951 after playing for several years in his group called the Dave Brubeck Octet. His group became very popular in the 1950s, most notably for his combination of great melodies, strong sense of swing, and unusual meters and rhythms from around the globe. Some of his more popular songs are "Blue Rondo a la Turk," "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "The Duke." He collaborated with quartet member Paul Desmond on numerous compositions; Desmond’s “Take Five” became the first jazz instrumental to sell more than one million copies. -

TMCF member-schools include the publicly-supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs). • The Monterey Jazz Festival is the oldest continuously-running jazz festival in the world established as a nonprofit organization in 1958. MJF will support participating jazz artists who are disproportionately impacted and losing their livelihoods due to COVID-19. The Monterey Jazz Festival’s mission is to inspire the discovery and celebration of jazz, anchored by an iconic festival. Even though we are not able to host an in-person festival in 2020, our work is anchored by an annual communion around jazz, a music rooted in black culture.
