20160807.Pdf Dear People of God, Our parish bulletin is read by people outside the parish and occasionally someone registers a question from afar. Today’s comes from Columbus and touches on a tract published by one of our Protestant Brethren about “Angels.” Although the author of the little tract is hard-pressed to find the angels in Genesis’ account of creation, he does find numerous references elsewhere to the creation of angels to function as God’s particular messengers to humanity. In fact, the bible is full of references to the angels who pass on something God wants a prophet or individual to know. A few of these messengers are mentioned by ‘name’, which isn’t actually a name but an identifier for the kind of message they are brining. I’m sure all of us know the names of the four Archangels: Mi- chael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel [who is mentioned only once in the Bible so is often overlooked], and I bet each of us over the age of forty occasionally thinks about that famous Guardian Angel watching over us and may even remember the prayer we said at night invoking the guardian angel’s protection. God’s messengers are sent to earth to help people, warn people, advise people, pass on commentary on the commandments and otherwise act as a kind of ‘loud speaker’ for what God wants humanity to know about God or God’s many works. Now for the question of the week: towards the end of the tract there is a brief four paragraph description of Jesus as the “Angel of the Lord.” The question is whether Jesus is/was/can be an angel. To answer, we need to translate the Hebrew term angel into English: messenger of God. In the broadest sense, Jesus, as the ultimate messenger of God the Father, could be considered - in Hebrew - as an angel. In using the English term we don’t generally think of Jesus as an angel; however, the tract goes on to quote Psalm 34: The angel of the LORD [remember, when you see all caps in the text it represents the four letter ‘name of God’ which no one was allowed to speak aloud] is on guard round those who fear him, and rescues them, and suggests that this is a reference to the great messenger of God who is sent from on high to deliver the people. Of course, that’s Jesus, the Son of God and God Himself who alone is worthy of rescuing humanity from its many sins. To the extent that he brings us a message of love, compassion, mercy and forgiveness, I suppose we could call Jesus the angel of the LORD, but when we ordinarily think of an- gels, spiritual messengers, we needn’t include Jesus in that company since one of the purposes of angels in the classical sense is to stand before the throne of God to sing God’s praises and while he may have sung in whatever passed as a shower in ancient times, Jesus does not spend his time in heaven singing to himself. The Celebration of Sacraments Infant Baptism: The Sacrament of Baptism is regularly celebrated on Sunday during or after the Eucharistic Liturgy. Registered parishioners are asked to arrange for the Baptismal Preparation Class and the Liturgical Celebration by calling the Parish Office. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: RCIA is the process of growing in your faith and love of God. Weekly gather- ings take place from September until Easter. If you are interested in learning about Catholicism and joining us please call Deacon Tom at the rectory. Penance: The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at IC, 9:30 a.m. at HSP and 10:30 a.m. IC every Sunday or by appointment. Matrimony: Anyone planning to be married must contact the parish at least six months in advance. The exact date and time of your wedding should not be determined until after consultation with a priest or deacon. If either party has previously been civilly or religiously married, the Presider is not permitted to set a date for the wedding without resolving the previous marriage. Pastoral Care of the Sick: When a parishioner is admitted to the hospital, nursing home, or confined to home because of age or infirmity, please call the Parish Office. Parishioners are ready to visit and to bring Holy Communion. When one is seriously ill, the healing Presence of the Lord should be requested in the Sacrament of the Sick. • St. Mary's Sts. Peter & Paul
APRIL 26, 2020| 3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER HOLY ANGELS ST. MARY’S STS. PETER & PAUL The CATHOLIC PARISHES of SANDUSKY To seek and to show the face of Jesus Christ. Final Blessing at Easter Vigil Seminarian Albert Beltz, Deacon John Bialorucki, and Father Hoyles INFORMATION ON THE HOLY MASS Even though we are not permitted to have a congregation at Mass at this time, Mass has not been cancelled! The priests of Sandusky continue to offer Holy Mass each and every day. We offer these Masses for the intentions listed below which had been scheduled weeks or even months in advance. Rest assured that your loved ones are being remembered at the altar even if you are not able to be present. Throughout this worldwide pandemic, the Eucharist is still being celebrated somewhere in the world at every moment of every day. “It would be easier for the world to survive without the sun than to do without Holy Mass.” (Padre Pio) Below, find some information on ways to unite yourself spiritually with the Sacrifice of the Mass.
