Disney India's 'Zokkoman' Closing Indian Film Fest of L.A. hollywoodreporter.com/news/disney-indias-zokkoman-closing-indian-171685 Festival runs April 12-17 at the Arclight theaters in Hollywood. by Nyay Bhushan 3/26/2011 3:20pm PDT NEW DELHI -- The world premiere of Walt Disney Pictures India's live action debut Zokkomon will close the 9th annual Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) on April 17. Written and directed by Satyajit Bhatkal, Zokkomon is described as an "adventure of an ordinary boy who finds the strength to face extraordinary challenges." The film will see a limited theatrical release in the U.S. in April 22, and stars child actor Darsheel Safary along with veteran actors Anupam Kher and Manjiri Phadnis. The festival opens on April 12 with director Nila Madhab Panda's I Am Kalam , the story of a young boy who struggles to get an education over seemingly insurmountable odds. The film is partly inspired by India's former President Abdul J Kalam. IFFLA's lineup includes 13 feature films, 6 documentaries and 13 short films which will be screened at the ArcLight in Hollywood. "We are extremely proud of this year's program. This year's selections were selected not only for their great storytelling, but because each reflects the creativity, color, pace and surprises that truly represent Indian culture and cinema," said IFFLA executive director Christina Marouda. IFFLA will also see U.S. premieres of feature films such as An Unfinished Letter (Iti Mrinalini) from director and star Aparna Sen, Virgin Goat (Laadli Laila) directed by IFFLA alumnus Murali Nair and writer/director Anurag Kashyap's That Girl In Yellow Boots. IFFLA's Bollywood By Night series will screen three popular titles including Kiran Rao's directorial debut Mumbai Diaries (Dhobi Ghat) starring her husband Aamir Khan, romantic comedy and runaway musical hit Band Bajaa Baaraat starring up-and-coming actress Anushka Sharma and blockbuster sci-fi fantasy hit caper Robot from director S. Indian entertainment and media outlook 2010 2 Indian entertainment and media outlook 2010 Message To our clients and friends both in and beyond the entertainment and media industry : Welcome to the 2010 edition of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Indian Entertainment and Media (E&M) Outlook, covering the forecast period of 2010–2014. Our forecasts and analysis for this edition focus on eight major E&M industry segments and one emerging segment. Each segment details out the key trends observed and challenges faced apart from providing the prospects for the segment. In the industry overview section, we have highlighted the key theme observed during 2009 and what we perceive as future trends in the coming years. We have a chapter on the tax and regulatory impact on the various E&M segments and for the very first time we have included a chapter on how technology can be leveraged in the E&M industry. In 2009, the economy severely impacted the world, translating into steep declines in advertisement as well as consumer spending. India though impacted, did manage to show growth with increased consumer spending as well as innovative action on the part of the industry. Against this backdrop, across the world, except certain markets, speed of digital spending increased due to changing consumer behavior as well as technology available to deliver the same. In India, while the spend on digital media is likely to grow, it is unlikely that it will dominate in the forecast period. This is largely due to the relative unavailability as well as unaffordability of the broadband and mobile infrastructure.

Bollywood's Lens on Indian Society Professor Anita Weiss INTL 448/548, Spring 2018 [email protected] Mondays, 4-7:20 pm 307 PLC; 541 346-3245 Course Syllabus Film has the ability to project powerful images of a society in ways conventional academic mediums cannot. This is particularly true in learning about India, which is home to the largest film industries in the world. This course explores images of Indian society that emerge through the medium of film. Our attention will be focused on the ways in which Indian society and history is depicted in film, critical social issues being explored through film; the depicted reality vs. the historical reality; and the powerful role of the Indian film industry in affecting social orientations and values. Course Objectives: 1. To gain an awareness of the historical background of the subcontinent and of contemporary Indian society; 2. To understand the sociocultural similarities yet significant diversity within this culture area; 3. To learn about the political and economic realities and challenges facing contemporary India and the rapid social changes the country is experiencing; 4. To learn about the Indian film industry, the largest in the world, and specifically Bollywood. Class format Professor Weiss will open each class with a short lecture on the issues which are raised in the film to be screened for that day. We will then view the selected film, followed by a short break, and then extensive in- class discussion. Given the length of most Bollywood films, we will need to fast-forward through much of the song/dance and/or fighting sequences.

JAMES M.Phil Scholar CMS College Coimbatore Abstract The child development is expandable and its potential may differ with the environment. Every child is different and hence, special. The distribution curve shows that most of the children who undergo dyslexia seem to be average in many traits. Few children deviate from the generally accepted norms in many ways. These deviations may give rise to multi factorial problems of adjustments at home, school and social setting and thus, leads to addition of problems in divergence. Deviation can be in terms of physical, social, emotional and mental characteristics. In the film Taare Zameen Par, the director Aamir Khan tried to disclose the present scenario of education. The director enhances his vision and mission through the film and he teaches about unconventional Montessori teaching. Teaching should not force the student to conform to the existing pattern of the world. The students should be equipped to think out of the box and define their own goals instead of fitting their ideas with the prevailing ones. Curricula and assessment should be flexible and encourage critical thinking on the part of the students so that they become compassionate and sensitive human beings. Interrogating Masculinity Through the Child Figure in Bombay Cinema
Networking Knowledge: Journal of the MeCCSA Postgraduate Network, Vol. 4, No. 1 (2011) ARTICLE Interrogating Masculinity through the Child Figure in Bombay Cinema SIDDHARTH PANDEY, University of Delhi, India Abstract Patriarchy is most often understood in relation to the position of women in society. I propose to interrogate patriarchy in relation to children – particularly the male child – as depicted in two major works of Bombay Cinema. The number and scope of critical engagements with the onscreen portrayal of the child figure are restricted, and in the light of this lack I interrogate the portrayal of the male child figure, with particular emphasis on the constructs of masculinity that always implicate the child. The paper will undertake a detailed analysis of these masculine constructs, which are significantly shaped and interrogated in the areas of family and educational institutions for the male child (See Kakar 1981, and Haywood and Mac an Ghaill, 2003). For case studies, I analyze two highly acclaimed contemporary movies of Bombay Cinema: Taare Zameen Par (by Aamir Khan, 2007) and Udaan (by Vikramditya Motwane, 2010). Both movies critique the many notions associated with manhood and masculinity by situating their arguments within the contexts of family and educational institutions. What makes these critiques even more significant is the resistance offered by the child figure to conventional masculine authority through the agency of imagination. With such agency, not only does the male child debunk the traditionally sanctioned interests and attitudes of men, but also brings about a reconfiguration of those behavioral co-ordinates that have till now dominated the domains of family and education.
