In Volume 19, Number 2, 1999 her introduction to Musicology and Difference (1993), Ruth Solie made the point that classification systems in music involve, imply, and reinforce social URI: https://id.erudit.org/iderudit/1014444ar hierarchies. What Solie had to say about the Western classification system DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/1014444ar applies equally well to India. This study supports the assumption, which I believe will hold true for other geographic regions, that there are universal implications to the term "classical," implications that include, but reach far See table of contents beyond, the musical. Specific to the Indian situation, however, are the particular historic dynamics involved in the subsidiary category known as "light-classical" music. See Geeta Kapur and Ashish Rajadhyaksha, ‘Bombay/ Mumbai 1992-2001’ in Iwona Blazwick (ed.), Century City: Art and Culture in the Modern Metropolis, Tate Publishing, London, 2001 This publication accompanied a major exhibition at the Tate Modern, London (February- April 2001) titled Century City: Art and Culture in the Modern Metropolis. The project set out to examine key moments of cultural creativity in nine cities across the world on the following premise: that at different times in different places through the twentieth century, the energy of the modern metropolis peaked to produce a cultural explosion, where the arts flourished in a dynamic and radical interchange. The reasons for these creative flashpoints are diverse, but each city, at its particular time, can be seen to have become a crucible drawing artists from the city and other regions into an artistic and intellectual ferment.

Political activist, actor, playwright and poet, Safdar had been deeply committed, like so many young men and women of his generation, to the anti-imperialist, secular and egalitarian values that were woven into the rich fabric of the nation’s liberation struggle. Safdar moved closer to the Left, eventually joining the CPI(M), to pursue his goal of being part of a social order worthy of a free people. Tragically, it would be of the manner of his death at the hands of a politically patronised mafia that would single him out. The spontaneous, nationwide wave of revulsion, grief and resistance aroused by his brutal murder transformed him into a powerful symbol of the very values that had been sought to be crushed by his death. Such a death belongs to the revolutionary martyr. 6 PUBLICATIONS Safdar was thirty-four years old when he died.

Arts and Philanthropy Art is a universal language where visual expression evokes raw emotions and is thus an effective medium of conveying the very important message of peace “and harmony. Indeed, powerful images of paintings can leave an everlasting impact on peoples’ minds.
