  • Domaine Porto Carras: a Greek Experience with Old World Vines
LEISURE / FOOD & DRINK / DRINKS Domaine Porto Carras: A Greek experience with old world vines March 18, 2014 5:26 PM MST View all 7 photos Enjoying the wines of Domaine Porto Carras and the cuisine from Ulysses Voyage. Any Olsen Opportunities come in many forms and when you are a wine lover it could be experiencing wines from a new region. In my case, the door opened for me to discover Greek wines. The wines were those of Domaine Porto Carras. In Greece there are 330 varietals of which only seventy- eight are imported. Many of these varietals are native to Greece. Most the wine in Greece is produced in the northern portion of the country. There are twenty different wine regions and the location of Domaine Porto Carras is an appellation onto its own as encompasses the Sithonia Peninsula. This peninsula is one of three that make up the Halkidiki Peninsula, which runs from the city of Thessaloniki south to the Aegean Sea and is shaped like a hand with three fingers. Sithonia is the middle finger. Situated along the coast of Sithonia, the winery sits atop a Cori Solomon hill on the slopes of Mount Meliton and affords magnificent views of the Greek coastline. There are 1100 acres of terraced vineyards, which make it ideal to grow Bordeaux varietals in addition to the Greek ones. The winery is planted with twenty-seven varietals of which thirteen are French and the other fourteen are those native to Greece. The grapes used for the Domanine Porto Carras wines are organically grown and utilize dry farm irrigation.

You are reading this because you love wine. Know why you love wine? The Greeks. (And because it makes the soul-crushing trials of life bearable) See, 3000 years ago there were folks bumbling around E the Mediterranean making dumpster fire wine. The Greeks saw this and said, "Hold my ouzo" and then changed the world. Everything we know and love about making and drinking wine was invented by Greeks. Seriously. This is not a "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" thing where Greeks SAY they invented SIP N everything but did not, they really did. Vineyard management? Greeks. Deciding on what grapes were I grown where? Greeks. Using special vessels to drink certain wines out of? Greeks. The concept of the wine tasting? Greeks. The sommelier? Yes, the weirdo writing this has a job because of Greeks. Nobody is perfect. The Greeks invented all of it. So, when you drink wine here you are drinking history. A W history of joy, reflection, and camaraderie. A history that continues in the wines made by the gifted producers on this list. So, grab a glass, pick a wine, thank a Greek, and drink. Yiamas. Available online: www.notulaebotanicae.ro Print ISSN 0255-965X; Electronic 1842-4309 Notulae Botanicae Horti AcademicPres Not Bot Horti Agrobo, 2019, 47(1):46-53. DOI:47.15835/nbha47111213 Agrobotanici Cluj-Napoca Original Article Genetic Study of Native Grapevine Varieties of Northern, Western and Central Greece with the Use of Ampelographic and Molecular Methods Katerina BINIARI, Maritina STAVRAKAKI* Agricultural University of Athens, School of Agriculture, Engineering and Environmental Sciences, Department of Crop Science, Laboratory of Viticulture, Iera Odos 75, 118 55, Athens, Greece; [email protected] ; [email protected] (*corresponding author) Abstract The aim of this study was the identification and discrimination of 49 grapevine varieties that are cultivated in northern, western and central Greece with the use of the ampelographic description and the molecular method RAPD. The grapevine varieties were located in their cultivation centers and the studied samples were collected from productive vineyards of these regions. For the ampelographic description, 22 ampelographic characters were used following a list of descriptors developed by the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), while for the molecular analysis 8 of the most polymorphic primers were used. The results showed that: (a) there is high degree of genetic heterogeneity among most of the varieties studied, (b) grapevine varieties ‘Xinomavro’ and ‘Zalovitiko’ exhibited identity with both methods used, therefore the latter constitutes a synonym/clone of the former, (c) high degree of genetic similarity was recorded between cv ‘Stavroto’ and ‘Abelakiotiko’, a result enhancing the view that they constitute biotypes/clones of an original/parent variety and originated through the accumulation of mutations, (d) a previous hypothesis is confirmed.

  • (Crete) PGI Achaia
PGI Chania (Crete) The PGI Chania zone is defined by the limits of the district of the same name in western Crete. The vineyards must be at altitudes of over 30 m. The PGI Kissamos wine zone has existed for many years in the northwestern section of the Chania district and is the only PGI zone to cover an entire area in Crete. Nevertheless, there are also vineyards and wineries in the central section of the district (Akrotiri, Theriso, Keramies, Moussouri) and in the northeastern section (Kryonerida) of Chania, and total production far exceeds that of the Kissamos area. With the introduction of the PGI Chania designation in late 2010, nearly the entire wine-producing region at the western end of Crete has acquired its own identity. Varieties Athiri, Vilana, Vidiano, Thrapsathiri, Muscat White (Muscat of Spina), Macabeu, Trebbiano, Kotsifali, Liatiko, Mandilaria, Romeiko, Tsardana, Fokiano, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Grenache Rouge, Syrah. Wine Types • Dry white, semi-dry, semi-sweet, sweet • Dry rosé, semi-dry, semi-sweet, sweet • Dry red, semi-dry, semi-sweet, sweet Sweetening is permitted in the production of semi-dry and semi-sweet wines. Sweet wines may either be fortified wines or sun-dried wines. In the latter case, other than grape exposure to the sun, no further intervention is permitted (sweetening, concentration, fortification). PGI Achaia (Peloponnese) The PGI Achaia zone (est.2004) comprises the district of Achaia, in Peloponnese’s northwestern part. Zone vineyards must be planted at altitudes ranging from 20 to 700 meters. Achaia is one of Greece’s most important winegrowing zones with four PDO wines produced within the zone’s boundaries (PDO Patras, PDO Muscat of Patras, PDO Muscat of Rio Patras and PDO Mavrodaphne of Patras).

  • Vcr Joint Work
CLONE SELECTION OF GREEK GRAPEVINE VARIETIES: A SUCCESSFUL VITRO HELLAS‐VCR JOINT WORK Nikolaos Tsompikos**, Nikolaos Dalpis**, Eugenio Sartori*, Francesco Anaclerio*, Elisa De Luca* *Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo, Rauscedo (PN), Italy **Vitro Hellas, Alexandria Imathias, Greece VIVAI COOPERATIVI RAUSCEDO (VCR) is a cooperative nursery of 250 partners founded in 1933 and settled in Friuli (North Eastern Italy). It is the world leader on the market of the grapevine propagation material. VCR has an yearly average production of over 60 million grafted plants in 4.000 rootstock/scion/clone combinations and has worldwide appreciation for the quality of its plants. In 1967 VCR established a 30‐hectare experimental farm, aimed to selection, evaluation and registration of new clones, equipped with a laboratory for phytosanitary screening (ELISA and PCR) and with a micro‐winery for enological clone characterization. At present more than 317 registered proprietary clones are successfully marketed in more than 28 countries across all continents. Vitro Hellas is a private company established in 1986 in Northern Greece, mainly involved in production and trade of high‐quality propagation material. Vitro Hellas produces different cultivars of fruit trees and is the official distributor for the Greek market of VCR grafted vines. Its research activities have been developing through several projects in cooperation with Greek and foreign Universities and research Institutes. The most significant international and local varieties of the Mediterranean basin have been included into VCR’s selection programs. At the end of the eighties, thanks to Vitro Hellas advice, VCR started a forward‐looking program for the selection of Greek varieties (Assyrtiko, Liatiko, Limnio, Mandilari, Moschofilero, Moschomavro, Roditis, Xinomavro, etc.), since in those times there were no clone selections for these Greek cultivars.
