DESMOND HOEBIG, Professor ofCello at The Shepherd School ofMusic at Rice University, has had a distinguished career as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician. Desmond was born in 1961 and raised in , Canada. He studied with James Hunter, Jack Mendelsohn and Ian Hampton. In 1978 he moved to Philadel­ phia to study with David Sayer at the Curtis Institute ofMusic. He received his BM and MM at the Juilliard School with and Channing Robbins, and participated in master classes with Janos Starker and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi at the Ban.ff Centre. Mr. Hoebig won the First Prize at the Munich International Competition (1984), the Grand Prize ofthe CBC Talent Competition (1981) and the Canadian • Music Competition (1980). He was also an award winner at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1982). Mr. Hoebig has been a soloist with many prominent orchestras in North Amer­ ica, including Cincinnati, Cleveland, , Montreal, and Vancouver. His international orchestral engagements have been in Germany, Spain, Portugal, .; Japan, Mexico and Colombia . As a chamber musician, Desmond was the cellist with the Orford String Quartet when they won a Juno award for the best classical music album in 1990. He has also performedfor 30 years with the Hoebig-Moroz Trio and in a duo with Andrew Tunis. Mr. Hoebig has taught and performed at festivals throughout North America, including Aspen, Ban.ff, La Jolla, Marlboro, Music Bridge, Orcas Island, Sarasota and Steamboat Springs. Before joining the faculty ofThe Shepherd School, Mr. Hoebig had been Prin­ I. cipal Cellist ofthe Cleveland, Houston, and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestras. Korean pianist JEEWON LEE has performed extensively as a solo and col­ laborative pianist with appearances in major venues such as Alice Tully Hall, Steinway Hall and Carnegie-Weill Recital Hall. She was twice voted "Audience Favorite" at Houston Symphony's Ima Hogg Competition in 2008 and 2009 and Ms. Lee's performances with Houston Symphony were broadcast live on KUHF and received critical acclaim. Since her Los Angeles debut with New West Symphony in 1997, Ms. Lee has given solo and chamber music performances in the US., Spain, Canada, Ger­ many and Korea. As a participant ofthe Leipzig International Music Festival, Ms. Lee was featured on Leipzig Radio and at the Gewandhaus Hall with the principal cellist ofthe Gewandhaus Orchestra, Christian Giger. At the La Jolla • Summer/est in 2008, Jeewon Lee performed as a part ofthe fellowship piano trio • in residence, and collaborated with artists such as violinist Cho-Liang Lin, cellist Eric Kim, and Michelle Kim, the Assistant Concertmaster ofthe New York Phil­ harmonic Orchestra. As a top prize winner ofthe Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition, Ms. Lee performed in Steinway Hall and Carnegie-Weill Recital Hall in New York. Ms. Lee gave a debut recital at Chopin Hall in Seoul in 1994. Winning re­ • nowned competitions early in her studies, she was invited to the Young Musicians Festival to perform at some ofthe most distinguished concert halls in Korea. Many scholarships have allowed Ms. Lee's talent to flourish, among them from the Young Musicians Foundation in southern California, Thaiviu-Issac Scholar­ ship (2001), Hendrickson Scholarship (2004) and Corrine Prada Pick Piano Scholarship (2004). She has performed in masterclassesfor Leon Fleisher, Yefim Broefman, Claude Frank, Arie Vardi, and Anton Kuerti among others. Notable festivals she has attended include the the Banff Centre Piano Masterclass and Chamber Music Residency (Canada), Bowdoin International Music Festival, Sarasota Music Festival, and the Gijon International Piano Festival (Spain). Jeewon Lee has successfully completed a double degree program in Econom­ ics and Piano Performance at Northwestern University, where she studied with Sylvia Wang and David Kaiserman. With various achievements in her undergrad­ uate studies, Ms. Lee was recognized in the National Dean's List, and graduated ~I with top honors. During the graduate program at the Juilliard School, she studied with Julian Martin and chamber music with JosefKalichstein. Currently, Jeewon Lee is a doctoral student in the studio ofJon Kimura Parker and studies chamber music with Cho-Liang Lin at Rice University where she also serves on the faculty ofthe preparatory division ofthe Shepherd School ofMusic. Recipient ofthe 2011 Pro Musicis International Award, American pianist ANDREW STAUPE is an internationally recognized soloist hailed by audiences and critics alike for his compelling virtuosity and poetic lyricism. Staupe has per­ formed across the United States and extensively in Europe, appearing in Russia, .. Holland, Latvia, Romania, France, Germany, and Bulgaria. On tour in Europe, he has performed in distinguished concert venues including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Rachmaninov Hall in Moscow, and the Ateneul Roman in Romania among others. This season Andrew will make his Carnegie Hall debut, as well as his Boston debut at Pickman Hall. Recent highlights include an acclaimed San Diego Symphony debut under Jahja Ling as a last minute replacement for Orli Shaham, and debuts with the Rochester Symphony and Minnesota Sinfonia. Since 2005 Andrew has been consistently re-engaged with the Minnesota Orchestra, and has performed with the orchestra 5 times with Osmo Viinski:i, Andrew Litton, Mischa Santora, and Daniel Alfred Wachs. He was a guest artist at the 2010 Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival, and performed on numerous occasions with acclaimed violinist Chee-Yun, including a recital at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. An avid chamber musician, Staupe has collaborated with distinguished artists such as Martin Chalifour, Anne Martindale Wililams, James Dunham, Leone Buyse, and Norman Fischer. Staupe has a keen interest in performing new music and has premiered a number ofworks for solo piano and chamber ensemble. Andrew has participated in a number ofmaster classes, per­ forming for pianists Yefim Bronfman, Stephen Hough, Gary Graffman, Awadagin

Pratt, Lee Kum-Sing, Paul Schenly, Jerome Lowenthal, and Eugene Pridinoff. 41 Other notable performances include concerts at the Kennedy Center and the Library of Congress in Washington DC, a solo performance at Jones Hall in • Houston, and an appearance on "A Prairie Home Companion" in 2004. His live performances have been broadcast nationally on KSJN in Minneapolis, KUHF in Houston, and WQXR in New York City. Staupe has earned prizes in a number ofcompetitions including the Gold Medal at the 2010 Young Artists Music Competition, and.first prize at the 2006 WAMSO (Minnesota Orchestra Volunteer's Association) Competition. A na­ tive ofSaint Paul, Minnesota, Staupe is currently completing his D.M.A in Piano Performance at Rice University with pianist Jon Kimura Parker. Andrew com­ pleted his B.M and MM in Piano Performance at the University ofMinnesota, studying with pianist and Distinguished McKnight Professor Lydia Artymiw. Before studying piano, Andrew was an actor and worked in numerous theater productions in Minneapolis, including performances ofMartin Guerre at the Guthrie Theater. He studied violin with Mark Bjork at the University ofMin­ nesota, and also enjoys performing jazz standards. Andrew founded The Leoninus Ensemble, a Medieval-Renaissance choral group, at the University ofMinnesota in 2004, and continues to have a passion for early music.
