Who can forget the first S&M (Symphony and Metallica) released in 1999, where the Four Horsemen performed their greatest hits with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. That first performance was conducted by Michael Kamen and was praised by critics and fans alike. There was huge demand for a second performance and it finally became a reality in 2019. Led this time by Michael Tilson Thomas, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and Metallica offer a purer vision than the one Kamen chose twenty years earlier. Rather than adding on layers of brass and strings like Kamen did, Tilson Thomas truly uses the orchestra to support the Californians’ music rather than enveloping it, retaining the essence of the original pieces, which become even more intense. This is a union between two worlds and the superimposed feeling of the first S&M disappears. The grandiloquent overture The Ecstacy of Gold (Ennio Morricone) introduces the instrumental The Call of Ktulu with an almost jubilant brilliance. Metallica also ventures into more acoustic lands (the band becoming more and more inclined to revisit their pieces in different tonalities) letting James Hetfield and the orchestra transport us into almost aerial atmospheres, like on All Within My Hands . Not just in a supporting role, the San Francisco Orchestra uses Metallica for relevant and enjoyable performances of Sergei Prokofiev’s Scythian Suite ( Chuzhbog and The Dance of the Dark Spirits ) and The Iron Foundry Opus 19 (Alexander Mosolov). Excellent choices that manage to grab you by the throat and convey an astonishing atmosphere. (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth , an instrumental originally composed and played by the late bassist Cliff Burton, is covered by double bassist Scott Pingel, making for a real highlight of the concert. It’s a shame that Metallica chose to include some of their classics, which are less suited to this orchestral setting, as it would have perhaps provided a more logical and cohesive setlist. S&M 2 is surprising and moving but also a bit frustrating at times. The Four Horsemen seem determined to take their catalogue in unexpected directions and to please themselves and their audience at the same time. Known to family, friends, and fans by her nickname "Flicka," the mezzo-soprano has enriched the world of classical music for three decades.     September 10, 2020 Please review the following additions to the San Francisco Symphony’s roster for the upcoming 2020–21 season. This season, Mark Almond joins the San Francisco Symphony as Associate Principal Horn. He joined the San Francisco Opera Orchestra as Co-Principal Horn in 2016 and before that held the position of 3rd Horn with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London. Growing up in Bolton, England, Almond was taught to play horn primarily by Christopher Wormald, his local high school music teacher, and subsequently won principal horn positions with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and the European Union Youth Orchestra. He made his professional debut playing with the London Symphony Orchestra, at age 19, and has since performed as guest principal with numerous ensembles including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to playing the horn, Almond is an experienced hospital physician and has a PhD in immunology and virology from Imperial College, London. He is currently researching COVID-19 as a Post-Doctoral Research Scholar at UCSF. Bryce Leafman joins the San Francisco Symphony as Assistant Principal Timpani/Section Percussion. Previously, he was Principal Percussion of the Billings Symphony Orchestra during the 2019–20 season, and he has performed with the Omaha, Berkeley, Marin, and New World symphonies; the Boston Philharmonic; and Symphony New Hampshire. In 2017 he was the first percussionist to win a solo concerto competition at the Aspen Music Festival, and he returned to the Aspen Music Festival in 2019 as the Charles Owen Memorial Percussion Fellow.

By David Mermelstein March 3, 2020 Michael Tilson Thomas, music director of the San Francisco Symphony, in 2018 When Michael Tilson Thomas became music director of this city’s estimable but not very exciting or forward-looking symphony orchestra in 1995, he had been working in London and needed an American career boost, and the ensemble was looking for an energetic maestro who would elevate its profile and maybe even lend it “buzz.” A quarter-century later, their partnership stands as one of the great success stories in U.S. musical history, thanks in large part to Mr. Thomas’s searching intellect, fierce curiosity, and supreme repertorial fluency. His direct connection to musical history, unmatched in our time, hasn’t hurt, either. As a result, the 109-year-old San Francisco Symphony is now widely regarded as among this country’s finest orchestras—right up there with East Coast titans like the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra. West of Chicago, only the Los Angeles Philharmonic challenges San Francisco’s dominance.     Boris Godunov Biographies Cast Stanislav Trofimov (Boris Godunov) began his operatic career in the Chelyabinsk Opera House in 2008, and went on to perform leading bass roles at the Ekaterinburg Opera House (the Bolshoi Theatre) and other opera theaters across Russia. He became a soloist at the Mariinsky Theatre in 2016. Mr. Trofimov has portrayed numerous leading roles including Boris Godunov (Boris Godunov), Philip II (Don Carlos), Procida (I vespri siciliani), Fiesco (Simon Boccanegra), Konchak (Prince Igor), Ivan Susanin (Life of the Tsar), Sobakin (Tsar’s Bride), Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich (The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia), Prince Gremin (Eugene Onegin), Ferrando (Il Trovatore), Don Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), and Old Hebrew (Samson et Dalila). Recent performances include Procida in Mariinsky’s new production of I vespri siciliani, Zaccaria in Nabucco at the opening of Arena di Verona Summer Festival, a tour with the Bolshoi Theatre as Archbishop in The Maid of Orleans in France, and performances at the Salzburg Festival as Priest in the new production of Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. Mr. Trofimov will appear at the 2018 Salzburg Festival and at Teatro alla Scala in 2019. These performances mark his San Francisco Symphony debut. This season, Cuban-American mezzo-soprano Eliza Bonet (Fyodor) made her debut at the Kennedy Center as a member of the Washington National Opera’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program, singing the role of Bradamante in Handel’s Alcina. As a part of this season’s nationwide Bernstein at 100 celebrations, Ms. Bonet performs as Paquette in Candide with the WNO, and with National Symphony Orchestra in West Side Story.
