Enid Majors Game Story

By Chris Morales

Despite a recent slump this summer, Garrett DeHaas never once changed his approach at the plate. His persistence paid off on Saturday, as the former Drummond High School standout knocked in the game winning , leading the Enid Majors to a 4-3 victory over the Bartlesville Indians.

“Coach Jensen never lost faith in me,” DeHaas said of his recent hitting woes. “It’s nice to finally get back on the right side and help the team get a win.”

The game began with Majors ace, Evan Kowalski, getting the start on the mound, eventually cruising his way to the third , where his offense would give him a lead. DeHaas, the eventual hero of the evening, drove in two runs on a with the bases loaded to give the home team the early 2-0 lead.

“It was good to see Garrett contribute the way he did tonight,” Majors head coach Chris Jensen said of DeHaas. “He works so hard for us, so to see what we did tonight was special.”

Through five , Kowalski had only allowed three hits, while striking five Bartlesville batters. But in the sixth inning, Bartlesville put up three runs against the righty.

With men on second and third base, Kowalski threw a wild , which cut the Majors’ lead down to 2-1. After two consecutive walks to load the bases, Indians standout Noah Yearout connected with a single to drive in two more runs to give the Indians the 3-2 lead.

“That was a tough inning for me overall,” Kowalski stated of the games sixth inning. “My command wasn’t where it needed to be, and a good team took advantage of that.”

Kowalski finished his night after 5 2/3 innings on the mound, while allowing three runs and five hits overall. Despite not leaving with a win, the Majors would not let Kowalski’s night end on a sour note.

The Majors offense found their chance to respond in the bottom of the seventh inning, beginning the frame with two consecutive singles, setting up men on first and third base. A Conner Gore to center would tie the contest at three, with the heroics of DeHaas to follow suit.

“The effort that we all put into the game tonight is why I think we’re a good team moving forward,” DeHaas said. “We trust each other, and that’s huge for the rest of the summer.”

With the win, the Enid Majors are now 16-5 overall this summer. The teams next games will come on Thursday evening, as the Majors prepare for a against the Mustang Broncos to begin at 5pm.
