PROCESS AND SPIRIT OF THE MPE A. How were members of the Self-study Committee – and its Chair – selected? The College of the Holy Cross was formally invited to engage the Mission Priority Examen process in the spring of 2018 when it received its letter of invitation from Rev. John J. Cecero, S.J., Provincial of the United States Northeast Province (UNE) of the Society of Jesus. (See Appendix #1 to this Self-Study.) However, remote preparations had begun before this formal invitation was received. These preparations included the drafting of a Sustaining Agreement during the preceding two years by the College’s leadership, its Jesuit Community and the Jesuit Provincial, a document that was signed by the relevant parties over several days in September of 2017. (See Appendix #2.) It was also during this time that Rev. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J., President of the College, asked Rev. William R. Campbell, S.J., Vice President for Mission, to chair the MPE process. Once the formal invitation to engage the MPE process was received, Fr. Campbell designed a general calendar and articulated a set of principles (both of which he shared with the President) to guide him in structuring the process. These principles included the establishment of a Self-Study Steering Committee to oversee seven sub-committees, one sub-committee focused on each of the seven characteristics articulated in the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) document Some Characteristics of Jesuit Colleges and Universities: A Self-Evaluation Instrument. These seven sub-committee chairs (who formed the membership of the Self-Study Steering Committee) were intentionally drawn, where possible, from campus community alumni of the Ignatian Colleagues Program (ICP – an intensive 18-month mission-focused professional development program sponsored by the AJCU) and various College-sponsored mission-related initiatives. Your support has meant so much to the ministries across the Midwest and in other regions of the world. These last months have created challenges to be sure. But are these never-before-seen challenges? I say not. Indeed, these are exactly the challenges that have called Jesuits into service for centuries. The plague interrupted the studies of the 23 year old St. Aloysius Gonzaga who ministered to the sick in late 16th century Rome and himself succumbed to the disease. During the cholera epidemic of 1849 many Jesuits including Fr. Arnold Damen ministered to the sick in St. Louis. And Fr. Pedro Arrupe ministered to the wounded in Hiroshima during WWII. So, the Jesuits are no strangers to challenges and to Christ’s call -- much like what we are seeing today. As the school year was interrupted in March, and the new school year begins, our many lay colleagues, along with Jesuits, have been working overtime to figure out how to continue to deliver a rigorous, quality education to thousands of young men and women in our schools. Midwest Jesuits involved in healthcare and in the education of healthcare professionals have had to pivot to address the needs of students and patients alike. And our Jesuits serving overseas have had to step up to serve those at the margins – in Uganda, in Nairobi, in Peru, and many other places where the suffering is great.

The kindness in your hearts and the love you show through all of YOUR good works, inspires me personally and keeps a flame burning throughout the church and in our Jesuit institutions. The word “Companions” used in my salutation, which we use to describe many of our events honoring your generous gifts of time, talent, and treasure, was not selected randomly. Indeed St. Ignatius’s closest and dearest friends with whom he began the Society, he referred to as his “Companions.” Later as his ideas evolved, he intentionally used a related word, “accompaniment,” to describe the pastoral activity we are all called upon to undertake—accompanying our brothers and sisters along their journey and in their time of need. As we publish this Honor Roll, I am reminded of the recently communicated Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAPs) released by our Superior General, Fr. Arturo Sosa, SJ, with the support of Pope Francis. This document provides guidance to all of us to focus our attentions on the following pursuits: leading people to Christ by promoting discernment and the Spiritual Exercises; walking with the excluded; caring for our common home; and journeying with youth. He said “The UAPs should help sharpen our focus on what’s really central to our mission at this point in history.” Pope Francis said the preferences “are in harmony with the present priorities of the church.” Our ability to serve in this way is only made possible through the partnership with you, our companions.

    ILLEGITIMATE BIRTHS IN GLOUCESTER, MA, 1855 – 1894 The term “illegitimacy” is derived from the Latin illegitimus, meaning “not in accordance with the law.” A child is considered illegitimate when it is conceived and born outside of the regulatory sanctions of marriage. In order to facilitate genealogical research the Gloucester, Massachusetts, City Archive department is in the process of building a series of data bases of the births, marriages, and deaths that took place in Gloucester in the last half of the 19th century. As we entered birth information into this data base we wondered what became of those children identified as ‘illegitimate.’ The following is a result of those ruminations. Please note that the figures provided are not conclusive, as during the period 1860 to 1875 the legal status of the child was only sporadically noted in the official records – an interesting fact in and of itself. Also, at the time of this survey, deaths were only available in an easily searchable format for the years between 1851 and 1873. Obtaining the figures from 1874 to 1894 would have consumed more time than was available to this researcher. Nonetheless, certain conclusions can still be drawn from the easily obtainable records. Illegitimate births accounted for less than 1% of the overall births in Gloucester during the thirty-nine years spanned by the survey, and were equally divided between the sexes (108 boys and 107 girls). This figure seems extraordinarily low compared, for instance, to the year 2000 when approximately 26% of all births in Massachusetts were recorded as illegitimate. However, one must take into account various social factors.

In addition to building on our strong outcomes for mothers and children in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota and Boston, Massachusetts, we opened an expanded campus in Austin, Texas; finished construction on our campus in Fargo, North Dakota; welcomed our first cohort of mothers to our new program in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York; and secured land and lead gifts to build a residential campus in Rochester, Minnesota. We are so proud of how far we have come. This year marks our 20th year of successfully transforming families out of poverty. When Jeremiah Program began in 1998, we started with 18 families. Over the past twenty years, we are proud to say that we have helped hundreds of single mothers graduate with a college degree and family-sustaining wages while preparing their kids to excel in school. To date, we have touched the lives of nearly 3,500 women and children, providing them with the resources they need to set themselves on a path to prosperity. Our work is needed more now than ever. Almost 10 million single parent families headed by women live in the country and more than 18 million children of single mothers are living in poverty (US Census). With the rise of single motherhood, demographers now estimate that 50% of all American children will live with a single mother before turning 18 and 70% of children raised by single mothers live in poverty. With families facing deep barriers to achieving social and economic prosperity, our services are critical to help single mothers and their children reach their highest potential.

    THE Fall 2020 Where the Marist Family Meets for News New Marist leadership eyes the future Fall 2020 DEAR MARIST FAMILY, 03 have walked the Marist halls for just about half of my life. I remember School News starting here as a nervous freshman. My family had moved here from Ohio, so we did not know many people. But as I walked the halls, I found friendly faces. I found Brothers who tempered being strict with 09 I their love of teaching and of God. I found teachers who were Athletic News passionate and pushed us to do better. I found teammates and coaches that gave every last bit of energy they had. I found 14 friends for life who have been with me for decades now. Advancement News When I became principal in 1998, I had a new perspec- tive as I made my way through the halls. So much was the same—the devoted Brothers, the dedicated teachers, the 17 Alumni News spirited students, the successful co-curricular programs. But as principal, I felt the urgency to put in place the programs, technology, space, and opportunities for our students and 29 faculty members to flourish so that our students were ready Donor Recognition Report for higher education and life. I humbly helped carry on the 2019-2020 Marist tradition of “reading the signs of the times,” as St. Marcellin had said, in order to serve our students. Today, as the first lay president of Marist Chicago, I see things from a different outlook. I now am looking towards the future and working to ensure that Marist’s Catholic, coed, college prep experience is available long after I walk these halls.

    Columban Mission in Cagayan de Oro Diocesan priests answer the missionary call It all began back in 1911 when Father Edward Galvin, a recently ordained Diocesan priest from Ireland accidentally meet another Diocesan priest, Father John Frazer from Canada in Brooklyn, New York. Galvin had been temporarily assigned by his bishop in Brooklyn, New York since ordination and was now due to return to his home diocese. Frazer, on the other hand, had volunteered to be a missionary inChina. What ever happened in that one conversation it was enough to convince Galvin that God’s call for him was to go to China with Frazer and not back to Ireland. After many years on mission Galvin would later become Bishop of Hanyang, China. However, before that in 1916 he returned to Ireland to seek the support of his Alma Mater, the National Seminary of Ireland (Maynooth), his classmates and fellow diocesan colleagues for a mission in China. Father John Blowick, one of the seminary professors, resigned his post and threw in his lot for Galvin’s cause. And thus in October, 1916 The Maynooth Mission to China began.It was to be a Society of Secular Priests (not a religious congregation) with the purpose of proclaiming the Gospel of Christ in foreign lands. Saint Columban, the 6 th century Irish missionary, who set about re-evangelizing Europe after the collapse of the Roman Empire, was chosen as Patron and his words: “ Perigrinari Pro Christo” (Exiles for Christ) would be the inspiration for these new missionaries to leave their homeland for the sake of Christ, not knowing if they would ever again return.
