Bio-availability is composed of four processes: 1) ingestion of soil, dust and foodstuffs containing contaminants; 2) release in the gastrointestinal tract and availability for absorption ( bio- accessibility); 3) intestinal absorption; 4) liver passing metabolism. Pedological Processes Soil forming processes which are mainly responsible for the development of distinct horizons in the soil profile. These processes involve the redistribution of materials within the soil profile and the addition to, and loss of material from, the developing soil. Water hardness Hardness is a natural characteristic of water which can enhance its palatability and consumer acceptability for drinking purposes. Originally taken to be the capacity of a water to destroy the lather of soap, hardness is now determined by measuring the concentration of calcium and magnesium in water. Total hardness is taken to comprise the calcium and magnesium concentrations expressed as mg/l calcium carbonate (CaCO3). UNIT OF MEASUREMENT Stream sediments: concentration of lead.

It is about one particular spot ‘on the plains of Tipperary‘ that I wish to write, namely my home parish of Borrisokane?? . So I turn again to verse, which so often suggests things that mere prose cannot? In a book of poetry, ‘The Spirit of Tipperary‘ published many years ago by the Nenagh Guardian,we find a poem by Dermot F ?Gleeson who for many years was District Justice in Nenagh.He wrote under the pen-name ‘Mac Liag‘ .     Clonmel Advertiser. 20-4-1822 We regret having to mention a cruel and barbarous murder, attended with circumstances of great audacity, that has taken place on the borders of Tipperary and Kilkenny. A farmer of the name of Morris, at Killemry, near Nine-Mile-House, having become obnoxious to the public disturbers, received a threatening notice some short time back, he having lately come to reside there. On Wednesday night last a cow of his was driven into the bog, where she perished; on Thursday morning he sent two servants, a male and female, to the bog, the male servant to skin the cow and the female to assist him; but while the woman went for a pail of water, three ruffians came, and each of them discharged their arms at him, and lodged several balls and slugs in his body, and then went off. This occurred about midday. No one dared to interfere, either for the prevention of this crime, or to follow in pursuit of the murderers. The sufferer was quite a youth, and had committed no offence, even against the banditti, but that of doing his master’s business. Clonmel Advertiser 24-8-1835 Last Saturday, being the fair day at Carrick-on-Suir, and also a holiday in the Roman Catholic Church, an immense assemblage of the peasantry poured into the town at an early hour from all directions of the surrounding country. The show of cattle was was by no means inferior-but the only disposable commodity , for which a brisk demand appeared evidently conspicuous, was for Feehans brown stout.

This is a great example of forward thinking and of having a unified approach to the development of a town or village. Because of the nature of Toomevara, with the main Dublin - Limerick road giving heavy traffic constantly this poses special problems for a village community. Co-operation with local authorities and organisations is obviously essential to progress work and Toomevara seems to excel in this respect. The number of people working on projects on the day of adjudication was edifying. There was painting, restoration, grass cutting and work on the riverbank in progress. This reflects the results that are to be seen in the village. THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT The general state of presentation of buildings is high. Sean Ryan's, Kinanes Kitchens and the parochial Hall would benefit from attention to bring them in line with the efforts made with other buildings. The Toomevara action plan by Tipperary County Council is a substantial document and addresses the buildings clearly in the village.

ABSTRACT Lead Zinc, copper, sulphide and barites have been mined in the Silvermines area of Ireland since Roman times. The last active mining ceased in 1993 and there is a legacy of abandoned open pits, underground workings, waste dumps, tailings and mine infrastructure. There have been incidents of animal lead poisoning and general health and safety concerns in various parts of the area. Groundwater and surface water continue to be affected to varying degrees and this paper presents the risk based approach used to assess the present environmental impacts, including the risk to humans and livestock. Options and preferred solutions for remediation and water management are discussed. Although there are many factors affecting decision making for remediation of abandoned mine sites such as Silvermines, this presentation will focus of the water management which is a key factor for the off site impacts. BACKGROUND The Silvermines area of County Tipperary has been mined for over one thousand years, for lead, zinc, copper, baryte and sulphur. The last mine, Magcobar, closed in 1993. The mining has resulted in undermining and surface subsidence, the excavation of open-pits, the construction of large waste dumps and tailings dams and the presence of derelict surface structures. The mine tailings, the rock waste and other process waste from mining, contain heavy metals, which are mobilised after heavy rain, entering the streams. In the past, the tailings impoundments have also produced severe dust blows, with the wind-blown particles containing heavy metals.
