The rise of such entertainment tends to drive them away from understanding and appreciating the values of Malaysian culture. Upin and Ipin animation has successfully promoted Malaysian folklore culture and has significantly portrayed the art of Malaysian values including Islamic values by providing the platform for harmonious relationship among different societies or groups or religious backgrounds. The focus of this research is to look into the usage of Malaysian culture iconic visual styles such as backgrounds, lifestyles, character archetypes and narrative (storytelling). Therefore, we hope that this research will benefit the younger generation by highlighting the meaning and importance of implicit Malaysian culture. La serie de animación propia Upin & Ipin ha promovido con éxito las diferentes culturas de Malasia y obtenido valores culturales significativos que representan a su arte, incluyendo el islámico, y proporcionando así una plataforma de relación armónica entre los diferentes grupos que componen la sociedad en Malasia, ya sea civil o religiosa. -

International Journal of Creative Multimedia Promoting Positive Values While Emphasising on Aesthetical Perspectives in University Students through Adaptation of Knowles Seven Step Process of Andragogical Approach Juhanita Jiman [email protected] University Malaysia of Computer Science and Engineering (UNIMY) Abstract This paper intends to illustrate how Knowles’ seven step process of androgogical approach can help educators to better facilitate animation students with acquired technological knowledge and skills while exposing them to critical aesthetical elements and ethical principles. It is important for educators to understand that they are dealing with young adults who are highly affected by their environments in this borderless world. Therefore, educators are responsible for more than just academics; they also have social roles. To resolve these concerns, an effective androgogical approach can be advantageous for both educators and students. We used to assume that teaching pedagogy was necessary at all levels of education; however, since university students are no longer children, pedagogical methods are not entirely relevant to them. Pedagogy is a teaching method that focuses on children, while andragogy is a teaching approach that focuses on adults and helps them learn more effectively. When people grow older, they become more self- reliant and accountable for their actions. The pedagogical model, in several ways, fails to take care for such developmental shifts, resulting in individual stress, frustration, and resistance. Due to the rapid development in technology, animation students have become highly aggressive in their pursuit of technological expertise, leading them to ignore and overlook the importance of a story's core values. As educators, we must not only help them achieve their goals in terms of technical abilities, and professional experience, but also teach them what is right and wrong, and inspire them to instil moral principles in their work. -

Malay Studies and Orientalism By Azhar Ibrahim Alwee National Institute of Education “The cultural mummification leads to a mummification of individual thinking” Frantz Fanon “Now colonialism and imperialism are not abstractions for me: they are specific experiences and forms of life that have an almost unbearable concreteness.” 1 Edward Said Introduction This essay attempts to discuss the effect of orientalist mode of thinking on the study of Malay society and culture in both colonial and contemporary times. This discussion however, is not exhaustive but shares a concern that it is crucial to understand the limitations that orientalist mode of thinking has had imposed on the Malay literary studies or Malay studies in general. In this paper, we argue that not only orientalism in colonial scholarship contained several prejudices and stereotypes but its continuities in the post-colonial scholarship, reflects a serious crisis of intellectual alienation amongst the indigenous scholars. Orientalism, as discussed by Edward Said, is basically the notion of the West about the Oriental/East.2 It is a style of thought or perception by which the Westerners came to understand, perceive and define the Orient. In this defining and demarcating of the Other (i.e. Oriental) the West/ Europe attempts to define itself. As a discourse, it makes a constant distinction between Western superiority and Oriental inferiority.3 Orientalism as discussed extensively by Said shows us how power and knowledge are inevitably combined, and it exerted several adverse effects on contemporary scholarship, be it in the West or the ‘Oriental’ societies. Generally the Orient is given the following characteristics or objectification: (a) it is monolithic; (b) it is static/stagnant and changelessness; 1 (c) it is inferior, simple and irrational; (d) it is primitive, exotic and mysterious. -

Thus, an interactive 2D animation about the Tale of Mousedeer and Crocodile or ‘Hikayat Sang Kancil & Buaya’ was proposed as a new alternative of folklore storytelling to enhance user experience. There are three main objectives in this study. Firstly, to identify the main factors contributing to the abandoning of the Malay folklore. Secondly, to analyse the existing tools and media available related to sustaining Malay folklore. Lastly, to design an interactive animation to help sustain Malay folklore by adapting it into the modern world through technology. The research methods used in this research were both qualitative and quantitative, to help obtain information, opinions, and ideas related to the research from the view of professionals from various backgrounds. The technology used is motion sensor technology using Leap Motion Controller to enable the interactivity between the animation and the user. The outcomes from this study shows that the respondents enjoy this new platform for Malay folklore storytelling. As a conclusion, this research helps to sustain the Malay folklore from the being swallowed by the modernization. -

International Journal of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences volume 5 issue 6 pp. 232-242 doi: https://dx.doi.org/10.20469/ijhss.5.20003-6 Folktales, Trans-locality and the Construction of Social Values by Children Mumtaz Begum Aboo Backer∗ Department of Drama & Theatre, School of the Arts Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia Abstract: Within the context of trans-locality, this paper will discuss two popular folktales shared amongst the Malay Archipelago, mainly Indonesian and Malaysia, Bawang Merah Bawang Putih (Shallots and Garlic) and the story of the cursed son known as Si Tanggang in Malaysia or Malin Kundang in Indonesia. This paper argues that although the stories may differ accordingly through the locality of the cultural adaptation, the ongoing process of acculturation and assimilation which influences communitys perception, however, what remains relevant and binds these communities of the Malay Archipelago, especially Malaysia and Indonesia, is the social values. This study adopts an arts-based research method which includes the systematic use of the artistic process, the actual making of artistic expressions in all of the different forms of the arts as a primary way of understanding and examining cultural heritage experi- ence. This paper further indicates that by presenting the children as actors and story-tellers through performative platforms, specifically, Wayang Kulit as in this research, they are not only able to present a better understanding of the social values from these different versions of the stories but also can re-contextualize these values to their daily lives. As a result, they acquire new skills and understanding in constructing new social values whilst drawing an analogical relationship between the trans-locality of the imagined situations in these folktales and their living realities. -

Zuern Singaporean Identity and Contemporary Culture: The Nationalization of Capitalism and Modernity What makes a place unique, that gives it its distinct identity? Its people. Its landscape. Its place in the world. Its passage through time. Promotional Ad Campaign by ‘Uniquely Singapore,’ Singapore Tourism Board Becoming independent and sovereign only in 1965, Singapore has emerged as one of the most economically successful and controversial nations in South East Asia. While Singapore is often celebrated for its remarkable economic success, measured through its passage from Third-World to First-World status in a short time, it is also notorious for its controlling, socially conservative government. Despite the controversy, the Singapore government makes no apologies for their state policies. Instead, it celebrates what is perceived as the unique foundation for its success. It is from this notion of uniqueness that this project begins. As someone who has lived in Singapore for a number of years, my time away has also enabled me to look back at Singapore with a critical eye; indeed, what is it that makes Singapore unique and gives it a “distinct identity”? I turn back to the promotional campaign’s top answer: “its people.” How are the people of Singapore, its citizens, fashioned? What is the relationship between the state and the citizens of Singapore? Naruse 1 Through this paper, I examine three components of citizenry in Singapore – capitalism, modernity and (ethno)nationalism – that construct the ideal Singaporean citizen. The relationship between these three components, I believe, can be understood as a triad: The Singaporean Citizen Triangle (ethno)nationalism The nation- state Singaporean citizen capitalism modernity Each of these imaginaries – nationalism, capitalism, modernity – figures in the Singaporean citizen’s identity as registers and logics through which the Singaporean citizen’s identity is read. -

A COMPARISON OF ANIMATED AND HUMAN CHARACTER PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS: THE CASE OF DENGUE CAMPAIGN BY MBAZZAKI MAYIMUNA A dissertation submitted in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Human Sciences (Communication) Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences International Islamic University Malaysia OCTOBER 2011 ABSTRACT This experimental study investigates the effectiveness of using animated characters in a public service announcement (PSA) on preventing dengue. The study seeks to find the difference in recall of animated and human character PSAs. This research also intends to unveil the difference in recall of PSAs between the recency and control groups. Using a post-test - only control group design, the researcher randomly assigned a total of 80 young adults to three experimental groups which are, animated group (who watched animated PSA only), human character group (who watched human character PSA only), recency group (who watched animated PSA in the last order) and one control group (no treatment given). The independent t-test analysis demonstrates that there was a significant difference in recall of the animated and human character PSAs with the results indicating that there was better recall for the animated PSA than the human character PSA. Furthermore, the test generated significant results for the recency effect towards recall of PSA. There was better recall of the PSA for the recency group unlike the control group which performed poorly in recall of PSA content. Generally, the results in this study suggest that animated characters and recency effect may enhance recall of PSA content. The researcher concludes that PSAs designed in persuasive formats with animation may play a pivotal role in raising public awareness on important societal issues that affect them and other people around them, for example awareness on the global burden of dengue and how to prevent it. -

These views and perceptions impact our relationship with the natural world. Note Some people see nature as wild and chaotic while others view nature as orderly, acting according to natural “laws”. There are those who perceive nature as an economic resource to be exploited for profit or for human enjoyment, yet there are also many who strongly believe that nature should be left untouched to flourish in its natural state. This issue of BiblioAsia looks at how human activities over the past 200 years have affected and transformed our physical environment, and how we are still living with the consequences today. This special edition accompanies an exciting new exhibition launched by the National Library – “Human x Nature” – at the Gallery on Level 10 of the National Library Building on Victoria Street. Do visit the exhibition, which will run until September this year. Georgina Wong, one of the curators of the show, opens this issue by exploring the relationship between European naturalists and the local community as plants and animals new to the West were uncovered. Not unexpectedly, indigenous input was often played down, dismissed, or exoticised. Farish Noor examines this phenomenon by taking a hard look at Walter Skeat’s book Malay Magic.
