For children growing up in this changing landscape, there are always new trends, platforms and behaviours to keep up with. For parents, teachers and regulators, it can be hard to stay abreast of the latest advancements and the newest risks faced by children online. The Children’s Media Lives study provides an in-depth understanding of how a sample of 18 children, aged eight to 18, are thinking about and using digital media, and how this differs and is influenced by age, life stage, family circumstances, peer groups and wider society. It explores how digital media use evolves over time as children develop and respond to offline factors such as new schools, friendships, and access to new technologies. This is the sixth wave of this longitudinal study into children’s media lives. The unique ability to review analysis, dating back to 2014, allows us to identify structural shifts in children’s media use and to explore the drivers behind new and emerging patterns of behaviour.     Battlebots Newsletter: Preparing for Competition March, 2021 As the newest design team, Battlebots has never competed before. Our first competition would have been in March of 2020. However, COVID cancelled all of our events that year. With that being said, the team will be competing with two robots this year: the 15lb robot from 2020 and the 30lb robot from 2021. Students are excited to finally be able to see their robots compete at Bots KC in Kansas City, MO and Norwalk Havoc Robot League in Norwalk, CT. Navigating the logistics of traveling safely to competitions has been a challenge, but we are hopeful everything will work out. The state of what is safe nowadays is always changing and we want to make sure we take all the precautions necessary to compete responsibly. In February, the team performed construction on building a full scale testing enclosure for our robots. The former 12ft square arena has been extensively upgraded. Measuring a full 16ft by 16ft with 8ft ceiling it meets the size of competition standards and allows our team to test and practice safely on a regular basis. The expansion was a whole team effort to construct. We tore down the old enclosure and used its components within the new arena to save cost of the material and manufacturing time. Now that the new box is complete, the team will really be able to see what the robots are capable of on a larger scale. Our new 30lb robot has been named “Option 14”. Its name is somewhat of an inside joke on the team.

    dino_bot.md Bot for Google Chrome's Dinosaur Game If you've ever tried to access google chrome while the internet is down, you've probably seen a screen simlar to this: T-Rex Run is a simple game. The user plays as the dinosaur, using the space bar to jump over incoming cacti and birds. It's an easy game to play, and python makes it even easier. Automate the Game In order to automate the game, there are two user inputs that we have to consider: 1. Clicking the center to start/restart the game 2. Pressing and unpressing the space bar to jump To accomplish these tasks, three python modules are used: 1. NumPy - for summating pixel values 2. Pillow - for image processing 3. PyAutoGUI - for controlling mouse and keyboard input Conceptual Overview The goal is to make the program able to analyze the area in front of the dinosaur and jump when something is in his way. The following image shows the two places that the program is using to do this: The blue rectangle is a reference to the area of the screen in front of the dinosaur that the bot is constantly running calculations on. As the game runs, the area in front of the dinosaur changes as obstacles approach. With Pillow, we're able to calculate the sum of the different pixel values specifically in the blue area in front of the dinosaur. When nothing is in front of the dinosaur, the value of the sum of these pixels represented by the blue rectangle is 1,447.
