Greetings! Two of the most important events of last month are crucial to discuss in this editorial. Firstly, disturbing stories of mass graves of Indigenous children in Canada are bothersome to all human beings. Secondly, European Union passed a resolution calling on Sri Lanka to express serious concern over the human rights abuses and urging the European Union Council to consider targeted sanctions against senior Sri Lankan officials accused of war crimes. This is a FOR JUSTICE welcoming approach that all other nations should follow. Cowessess First Nation announced last month the discovery of hundreds Together, we can change society! of unmarked graves on the grounds of the former Marieval Indian Residential School in the Canadian prairie province of Saskatchewan, and Indigenous leaders say they will find more at other sites. Chief Cadmus Delorme of the Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan said they found at least 600 graves Mission after radar detected 751 “hits” in a field on the school grounds. Chief Bobby Cameron of the Federation of Sovereign Indian Nations said the discovery, With the view to providing a voice to expose acts of injustice against coupled with the recent discovery of the remains of 215 Indigenous children individuals or communities, whether they be unfair, discriminatory, illegal at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia, shows or unjust, “Voice for Justice” stands firm on the ground that there can be no “genocide” committed by Canada. freedom without justice. However, structural genocide has now taken a strong hold on their lives, compounded with denial of accountability and non-dispensation of justice and reparations for the victims. The UNHRC Resolutions of 31/1, 34/1, 37/1, and 40/1, sponsored by core members including the USA, the UK and Germany were met with contempt, rejection and denials of Sri Lankan Governments which consider accountability and justice as anathemas, irrelevance, and interference with Sri Lanka’s sovereignty and integrity, which are exploited as convenient shields of impunity for defying the resolutions.
