(2009) Directed by Dr. Elizabeth Chiseri-Strater. 149 pp. This dissertation intends by contextual analysis to examine a Southern textile community and through its literature—formal and informal, and written before, during, and after the 1929 Lora Mill strike—to show how the stories of this community construct a “figured world” in which identities were formed and lives were made possible through the genres and language practices of different social groups in Gaston County. It argues that each discourse—that of the mill barons, the mill workers, and the communist labor organizers— developed primarily along lines of money and social class, and shows how each discourse defines itself and is subsequently defined, silenced, and/or given voice by the others. It studies the genres of each written discourse (histories, newspapers, dramatic presentations, songs, and other studies) from a power standpoint that each genre maintains this particular social context. These discourses require and sometimes create speaking and writing genres that define the communities and map out the power structures that further define and divide the members of the community. Individuals define themselves, define others, and negotiate power through the discourses in which they participate. This dissertation intends to examine a Southern textile community and through its literature— formal and informal and written before, during, and after the 1929 Loray Mill strike— show how the stories of this community construct a world in which identities are formed and lives are made possible through the genres and language practices of the various social groups. It argues that each of three discourses—the mill barons, the mill workers, and the communist labor organizers—developed primarily along lines of money and social class and shows how each discourse defines itself and is subsequently defined, silenced, and/or given voice by the others. It studies how each discourse employs genres in relation to the power or lack of power that each genre maintains in this particular geographical and social context. In the early years of the nineteenth century Gaston County, North Carolina, was a quiet place, carved out of two adjoining counties, and butted against the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The seeming peacefulness of the county was interrupted in 1848 2 when the first pieces of textile machinery rolled into the county and the beginning industrialization divided the people into two groups; owners and workers. Within sixty years the communists arrived to start labor unions and each group established its own discourse, privileging some and disprivileging others, each with its obvious motives and its hidden motives, each with its silences. The ensuing battle of ideals became one of the bitterest of the management-labor disputes in the United States textile industry and its effects are evident in Gaston County today, nearly a century later. It is within this context that the mill barons, the mill workers, and the communist union organizers established their unique discourses. This contextual analysis follows the prescriptions set forth by Harold Bazerman and Paul Prior: a contention that “regards particular rhetorical acts as parts of larger communicative chains, or conversations” (183). The discourses of each of the three social groups act and react within the larger context of the community as a whole and define themselves and the others in relation to this community. Just as these discourses are dependent on each other, they also operate independently of each other and so demand that the contextual analysis be combined with a textual analysis to understand what Bazerman and Prior refer to as the interplay between the two (362). It is within this intertextuality that the motives of each discourse can be observed and understood most fully. Terms of the Argument Linguist James Paul Gee argues that discourse situates us in relation to others and defines our possibilities and gives us access to live within and outside the

By examining working-class literature that adopts the rhetoric of “feeling right” in order to promote a proletarian ideology as well as neo-slave narratives that wrestle with the legacy of slavery, this study explores the ways contemporary authors engage with familiar sentimental tropes and ideals. Despite modernism’s influential assertion that sentimentalism portrays emotion that lacks reality or depth, narrative claims to feeling— particularly those based in common and recognizable forms of suffering—remain popular. It seems clear that such authors as Grace Lumpkin, Josephine Johnson, John Steinbeck, Margaret Walker, Octavia Butler, and Toni Morrison apply the rhetorical methods of sentimentalism to the cultural struggles of their age. Contemporary authors self-consciously struggle with sentimentalism’s gender, class, and race ideals; however, sentimentalism’s dual ability to promote these ideals and extend identification across them makes it an attractive and effective mode for political and social influence.

D. Cornell University 2019 Demonizing Unions uncovers the significance of a Biblical idiom in American novels portraying violent labor conflicts from the 1910s to the 1930s. I reveal the different ways that Upton Sinclair’s King Coal and The Coal War, Mary Heaton Vorse’s Strike!, and Ruth McKenney’s Industrial Valley employ a Biblical motif both to emphasize the God-like power of Capital over society, and to critique an emergent socio-political faith in business power. The texts I examine demonstrate how it was clear to industrialists in the early 20th century that physical violence was losing its efficacy. Therefore, much of the brunt of the physical conflict in labor struggles could be eased by waging a war of ideas to turn public opinion into an additional, ultimately more powerful, weapon against the potential of organized labor. I argue that in these texts, the besmearing of the discontented workers as violent dupes of “outside agitators,” rather than regular folks with economic grievances, takes on Biblical proportions. In turn, these authors utilize Biblical stories oriented around conceptions of power and hierarchy to illuminate the potential of ordinary humans to effect their own liberation. Minimum wage, better pay, safer working conditions, better standard of living, apprenticeship programs, saving lives, better benefits, civil rights protections, fair treatment for women, and overtime pay are just some of the benefits that they will receive as they work their summer jobs at Chick Filet or Auto Bell, and as they move on into more long-term positions after high school or college. So, why do they need to know about the history of unions? Their pay check is a result of the protest and struggle American workers have engaged in over the last 100 or more years. It is crucial for them to comprehend the sacrifices and struggles that the American laborers undertook in order to get these kids to enjoy a minimum wage, and work within a safe and orderly environment. It is guaranteed now but was not always. My goal is to feature lessons about the American labor movement from late nineteenth century to the 1950s. Subjects covered will include the rise of the labor movement in the US, labor unions, strikes, and moving on in to the South, textile mills and the Loray Mill strike of 1929.

    JEWS IN THE AMERICAN LABOR MOVEMENT: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE by Bennett Muraskin INTRODUCTION Think of the greatest strikes in US labor history. Apart from the garment workers' strikes in New York and Chicago before World War One, none come to mind in which Jews played a major role. The railroad workers' strike in 1877, the strikes for the eight-hour day in 1886, the Homestead Strike in 1892, the Pullman strike in 1894, the coalminers' strike in 1902, the steelworkers' strike in 1919, the general strike in San Francisco in 1934 and autoworkers' sit- down strike in 1936-1937 all occurred either before Jews immigrated to the US in large numbers or in industries where few Jews were employed. Among the “industrial proletariat” considered by Marxists to be the agency of social revolution, Jews were under-represented. Furthermore, apart from the WASP elite, only Jews, among all European immigrants to the US, have been over-represented in the world of business. But if you look a little closer, you will find Jews as the ferment for a great deal of radical labor activism. The only two Socialist Party candidates elected to the US Congress were Victor Berger and Meyer London. Bernie Sanders is the only US Senator to call himself a “socialist.” All three were Jews. (Ronald Dellums, a non-Jewish Black man who represented Berkeley CA in Congress as Democrat from 1970 to 1997, is the only other person to so identify.) The Jewish garment workers' unions pioneered social unionism and were among the founders of the CIO.

Greene All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT Between the 1930s and mid-1980s, North Carolina became one of the most industrialized states in the country, with more factory workers, as a percentage of the total workforce, than any other state. And yet, North Carolina generally retained its rural complexion, with small factories dispersed throughout the countryside, instead of concentrated in large industrial cities. This dissertation asks two essential questions: first, how did this rural-industrial geography come to be, and second, what does the creation of this geography reveal about the state of the American political economy in the post- World War II era? I argue that rural industrialization was a central goal of North Carolina’s postwar political leaders and economic development officials. These industry hunters, as I call them, wanted to raise their state’s per capita income by recruiting manufacturers to develop or relocate operations in North Carolina. At the same time, they worried about developing large industrial cities or mill villages, associating them with class conflict, congestion, and a host of other ill-effects. In the hopes of attracting industry to its countryside, the state invested heavily in its secondary roads and highways, increasing the accessibility of rural communities.

    “DO WE LOOK LIKE OUTLAWS?”: REPRESENTATIONS OF LABOR UNIONS IN AMERICAN CHILDREN’S NOVELS by CYNTHIA ANNE MCLEOD (Under the Direction of Joel Taxel) ABSTRACT In this arts-based multigenre dissertation, I explore representations of labor unions in 53 American novels for children and young adults. The selective tradition described by Raymond Williams (1977) offers a lens for analysis, explaining the process whereby versions of history that serve the interests of the dominant culture come to be viewed as logical or natural when, in fact, other competing versions can and do exist. I analyze depictions of class consciousness within the novels and identify specific topics that are missing or under-represented in the novels. My creative writing about the general textile strike of 1934 provides insight into ways in which alternate viewpoints might be silenced, and historical description of the strike explains how Georgia’s textile workers experienced the strike and its aftermath. Through autoethnographic pieces I examine my own developing awareness of the power and possibilities of story as a means of resisting the selective tradition. These novels provide opportunities to explore the neglected issue of social class in American children's literature. I argue that labor unions in children’s novels are historicized in ways that weaken their connection with the present and suggest that the problems unions seek to remedy were resolved long ago. The overwhelming majority of the books are historical fiction, and their representations of labor are far more sympathetic than those of the six contemporary novels. The novels focus on aspects of labor that situate it in the past, so that young readers lack contemporary portrayals of organized labor.

The workplace is and has long been a central battlefield of economic, political and social conflict, woven through with tensions of class, race and power. The conditions, relationships and cultures established in the workplace influence all of our lives. The actions and aims of the Workers Viewpoint Organization leading up to Nov. 3, 1979, cannot be understood outside the broader history of labor in North Carolina and throughout the southeastern United States. This chapter looks at that history – at what issues propelled and influenced work and labor and union activism, what reactions organizers encountered from managers and workers, and, more specifically, the actions and history of the WVO’s union campaigns and how workers, the mills, other institutions and the broader community reacted to these campaigns. Labor organizing in the American South Despite its reputation as a region hostile to unions, the American South has seen some of the most persistent and creative organizing activities in the United States. For more than a century, West Virginia mine workers, the Industrial Workers of the World (known as the Wobblies) in Louisiana’s timber groves, tenant farmers and North Carolina’s textile workers have all established landmarks for union organizing that benefited American workers as a whole. In some cases, both whites and blacks were members and union officers. By 1920, over a quarter of the 420,000 textile workers in the United States belonged to unions, roughly half of them in the South.1 Far from a homogenous collection of passive, racially divided workers, Southern workers united across gender and racial lines to confront some of the most powerful industries in the region, even in defeat gaining crucial advances in pay and working conditions.2 At the same time, some of America’s most devastating anti-union violence has taken place in the South.
