Co- President of the Federation of Gay Games, Kurt Dahl, and FGG Technology Officer, Gene Dermody, met with the new group in Cleveland on 16 October 2010. The new organisation represents the LGBT community and high-profile civic leaders of Cleveland. The City of Cleveland will continue to be very involved in assisting the world’s largest sports and cultural event to come to Cleveland- Akron, Ohio. Local tourism representatives with local LGBT sports, cultural and community civic leaders have joined forces to organise the 2014 Gay Games in Cleveland. Federation of Gay Games Co-President, Kurt Dahl, is very pleased with the new organisation. “The high calibre of people and organisations that are part of this group is incredible and will help ensure wide support in the state of Ohio. I am very impressed to see Mayor Frank G. Jackson's involvement. Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010 was helped greatly this year in Cologne, Germany, by the local city government and the German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle.” “The Gay Games in 2014 will shine a national and international spotlight on the City of Cleveland. Our representatives either lead or are a part of some of Cleveland’s and the region’s most dynamic institutions and will help show the world our greatness,” said Mayor Frank G. Jackson. The Cities of Cleveland and Akron were awarded the Games last year following a competitive bidding process. Cleveland City Council passed legislation in support of the Gay Games in 2014. The games will take place in Cleveland August 9-16, 2014. Cleveland Special Events Corp. board member Nathan Tolliver is ready to work in this group. ”As an openly gay African-American young man, who also happens to be a native of Cleveland, it is truly an honour and a privilege to be involved in the world's largest sporting and cultural event organised by and specifically for LGBT athletes, musicians, artists. I am very excited about the impact this special event that brings together people from all over the world will have on the city of Cleveland and particularly our own LGBT community.” Board member Hollie Ksiezyk commented on how current bullying issues tie in to the importance of the 2014 event. “At a time where there is so much pain and grief surrounding LGBT youth, we look forward to reaching out to our schools and young people in the community to provide a safe outlet and environment among friends and family. Henderson © 2010 Brian Conlin ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT BRIAN CONLIN: Who’s on the Playing Field?: A Journalistic Series about Homosexuality in Sports (Under the direction of Jan Yopp, Dr. Richard Cole and Dr. Karla Henderson) The number of openly gay and lesbian athletes has boomed since the 1980s. The Gay Games is one example of this. The first Gay Games in 1982 had 1,300 participants. By 1994, the Gay Games drew 11,000 participants. In three articles, this master’s thesis examines various aspects of gays and lesbians in sports. The first article covers the Gay Games. It includes information about its supporters and protestors, a brief history and a look ahead to the upcoming Gay Games and beyond. The second article profiles a rugby player on the Carolina Kodiaks, one of two gay rugby teams in North Carolina. The third article examines how journalists, especially those in sports departments, cover LGBT issues. The thesis aims to explore the issues of the gay and lesbian community as they pursue sports and to show that LGBT issues in sport will become more important as society becomes more tolerant.

Abstract Many members of the LGBT community have viewed the Gay Games as an opportunity to challenge dominant ideologies concerning sexuality and sport participation. Members of the mass media, however, play a potentially important role in how the event is perceived by the general public. Therefore, the primary purpose of the current study was to examine how the Gay Games have been framed in newspaper coverage. A total of 646 articles published in the United States covering the eight Gay Games events held during the 32-year period of 1980 to 2012 were analyzed in terms of three aspects of framing: (1) the types of issues highlighted, (2) the sources of information cited, and (3) the manner in which either episodic or thematic narratives were employed.

  • Accueillir Les Gay Games À Paris En 2018 : Du Projet Sportif Au Projet Urbain Structurant
Abstract Paris was chosen to host the next Gay Games, a sports tournament organized by gay and lesbian associations in order to promote inclusion in sports competition. The Gay Games are similar to an Olympic Games organization, but quite different in spirit. The emphasis on cooperation and the smaller budgets seem to entail a lesser impact on the urban territory. However, the huge number of participants, the political claims, the specificity of Paris – a world class capital city – and the probable consequences on gender norms and visibility in the city, all contribute to make the Paris 2018 bid an actual urban project, indeed a veritable city project.

WANG, JIAYI, M.S., May 2016 Hospitality and Tourism Management UNDERSTANDING CLEVELAND AS A SPORTS DESTIONATION: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF BRAND PERSONALITY THEORY (76 pp.) Director of Thesis: Phillip Wang, PhD In this globalizing world, sporting events play an important role in improving the attractiveness and competitiveness of a city. Sports tourism and sporting events are viewed as a growing niche market. This is reflected by the contribution that sports tourism brings to a destination. As a consequence of sports being attractions or activities that tourists seek to experience in the destination, it is paramount for a destination to be able to offer them. Cleveland’s continuously increasing sports offering is making the city an appealing tourist destination to wider groups of tourists. Brand personality theory provides the theoretical support for the present study. The purpose of the study is to test the brand personality framework in the context of sports tourism, explore the brand personality of Cleveland as a sports destination, and apply the theory into destination marketing.

There has been a scarcity of research on the full range of legacies that these types of medium-sized events can have, as previous studies focus on larger mega-sport events like the Olympics and/or economic and infrastructural aspects. This study evaluates the potential sociopolitical and sport legacies of the 2014 Gay Games held in Cleveland/Akron, based on interviews with 29 key stakeholders and complemented with conversa- tions with 46 local residents. It demonstrates a range of positive sociopolitical and sport legacies were cited, although awareness of possible negative legacies and barriers also emerged. The discus- sions, centered on legacies, show the Games have symbolic significance for both the gay and wider community and accelerated the process of more accepting societal attitudes towards LGBTQ people. The conclusion discusses the somewhat qualified transgressive potential of the Games to challenge wider existing dominant heteronormative values in the local area. • An Examination of the Motivations for Sponsorship of Gay Games IX
Journal of Marketing Management June 2018, Vol. 6, No. 1, pp. 30-40 ISSN: 2333-6080(Print), 2333-6099(Online) Copyright © The Author(s). All Rights Reserved. While sport sponsorship has emerged as a substantial topic in the marketing and management literature, there is minimal research investigating the growth and prevalence of sponsorship for amateur based sporting events, particularly sporting events which attract predominantly lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered participants. Therefore, this exploratory case study set out to examine the motivations of the sponsors of the 2014 Gay Games, in an effort to understand why companies chose to affiliate with the LGBT amateur sporting mega- event. Site observations, document collection and analysis, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 sponsorship decision-makers representing 13 companies in order to investigate reasons which led organizations to enter into sponsorship agreements. Findings indicated that motivations for sponsorship included support for an event with aligned mission and values, a desire to support the northeast Ohio community, and a personal connection to the LGBT community. Keywords: Gay Games, motivations, sponsorship, case study 1. Introduction Sponsorship of sport properties has grown into a multi-billion-dollar component of business (IEG, 2017) and a necessary revenue stream for the sport and recreation industry (Stotlar, 2013). Mullen, Hardy, and Sutton (2000) define sponsorship as “the acquisition of rights to affiliate or directly associate with a product or event for the purpose of deriving benefits related to that affiliation or association” (p.
