CTBA Band Scramble Fundraiser July 7th at Artz Ribhouse

Garage sale : 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm Band Scramble drawing: 5:30 pm Scramble Performances: 6:30 pm

Greetings all: Well it’s time once again for the annual BAD SCRAMBLE. This is one of CTBA’s biggest Fundraiser of the year. It is time for all of you to look in the back of the closets and other storage places and get out all of those music related items which you have not used for a while and donate them to CTBA.

Since the sale starts at 3:00pm it would be good to have them there between 2pm and 3pm so they can be set out. If you haven’t used them in the past year it is time to make the move and clear them out.

If you have any questions seek out Ken Brown, he has all 2330 S. LAMAR the answers and can direct you to the proper place. He will be AUSTI, TX. passing his cap around at 5:30 to take names which will be drawn 512 261-9440 randomly for the performances starting at 6:30. Any of you experienced people want to volunteer I’m sure Ken will not turn down the help.

2007 Camp Bluegrass ominees

We put out the call last month for nominees for The Willa Porter Music Scholarship. So far we have only one name in the hat. There is a limited time period in which one can register for the classes. We have to make the de- cision within the next few days or our person will not be able to attend.

This is an important worthy program and something we want to keep going. If anyone wishes to make a donation to the scholarship foundation please mark your check for the Willa Porter Music Scholarship fund and mail it to CTBA , P.O. Box 9810, Austin, Texas 78766-9816. Your participation in this program is greatly appreciated. CTBA Band to share spotlight with Byron Berline Byron Berline at the Cactus Café Saturday, July 28th, 8:30

After a huge success last year Byron Berline is back. Byron Berline performed with the Sieker Band at Artz Ribhouse and the place was packed to the last seat. It was an amazing concert and a great Austin welcome for Byron.

Byron Berline is one of the most influential play- ers. He played for almost everybody in the business, was a Bluegrass Boy in Bill Monroe’s band and a mem- ber of Country Gazette with Alan Munde. He was nominated for two Grammy's. With his band “The Byron Berline Band” he frequently has taken his music to Europe.

Rolf Sieker and Byron Berline have been friends for a long time. They played together in Europe many times touring Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland. They also performed together at the Bluegrass Festival in Winfield, Kansas.

This year, Byron Berline, along with The Sieker Band, will be at the Cactus Café. There will be a $10 cover charge. For discounts please email [email protected]. Also you can go to: www.siekerband.com

CD REVIEW Double Bluegrass Spectacular By Tony Trischka, Rounder Records

Double Bluegrass Banjo Spectacular is the latest from banjoist Tony Trishka and marks his periodic return to core blue- grass. The uniting theme of the 14 songs on the disc is that each is a duet with another top notch banjo player

To be safe, Trischka begins with the standard “Farewell ” and plays second banjo to . The format that is followed on this cut, and most of the tunes, is to have the two start off together, often with Tony playing harmony to the sec- ond banjo. Each player then plays a solo. Tony usually embellishes a bit beyond the first solo. Fiddle, , and dobro solos are interspersed throughout most cuts.

Some of the tunes were recorded with the players all together in the same session. Others, such as “Doggy Salt” (the chord progression of “Salty Dog” played in reverse), were created by Trischka recording his part and letting the second player, in this case, Scott Vestal, overdub his part. Vestal ends up adding a harmony banjo on this one.

Tom Adams twins on a nice take of “Fox On The Run” and Bill Emerson demonstrates why he is known as having impecca- ble timing on his composition, “Old Cane Pole.” Most of the pieces will be easy to grasp by the average bluegrass fan. The two that stand out as “on the fringe” would be the two tunes with Beta Fleck. These tunes include multiple sections of intri- cate doubling and tempo and meter changes.

The tune receiving the most attention off the CD is a song that comedian wrote, called “The Crow.” It has a fairly simple, catchy melody. Martin States the theme followed by Trischka and Fleck twinning before they each take a solo and throw it back to Martin to restate the opening theme. The three have played the piece on the daytime show, Ellen and nighttime’s David Letterman Show. While the double banjo concept is sure to thrill hardcore 5-stringers, the average bluegrass should find much to like about this CD as well. —Eddie Collins— (Eddie is a noted instructor and performer of Bluegrass in the Central Texas area)
