THE ‘Greg Williams’ of the WAFL – that’s how former premiership teammate describes Top 25 Over the Past 25 inductee Rod Wheatley. When East Perth’s drought-breaking premiership dream became a reality in 2000, South West product Wheatley was at the core of the success. The prolific triple premiership-winning midfielder had been having one of the best seasons of his career in 2000 when he, as part of the Royals leadership group, helped the club win its first premiership since 1978. Jubilant scenes followed, although Wheatley had to enjoy them after having a few strong headache tablets. The Royals were playing in their first grand final since 1996 where they suffered an agonising two-point loss to Claremont. Wheatley had 23 possessions in the first half before a ‘freak’ accident 18 minutes into the third term. East Fremantle opponent Leigh Willison soccered the ball and Wheatley’s head got in the way. WAFL Colts Super Round

THE West Australian Football League has scheduled three colts games to be played at East Fremantle Oval this Saturday, May 12 to increase recruiting opportunities for young players. With the support of the East Fremantle Football Club, three Round 9 WAFL colts games will be played at East Fremantle Oval, with the first game to commence at 9am and the last kicking off at 2pm. The Peel Thunder versus Claremont colts game will be played after the league match at Bendigo Bank Stadium, commencing at 5.15pm. West Australian Football Commission Pathways Manager Darren Davis said the Colts Super Round initiative had received the support of WAFL football managers, player development officers and colts coaches, providing a great opportunity to showcase three colts games at one venue on the same day. “We are looking forward to what should be a great day for our WAFL colts and an opportunity for AFL recruiting staff to view four matches in one weekend, with the 5.15pm start at Bendigo Bank Stadium set to allow for travel time from East Fremantle,” Davis said. The Colts Super Round will be the final round of colts fixtures before trial games start for the State 18’s Talent Academy.
