Thanks to our Member's dues, a substantial contribution from our most generous member and contributions from a couple of local patriotic organizations, we will end the year financially sound and feeling confident that we will be able to make any emergency repairs and continue to make improvements to the Museum. As reported in previous Scuttlebutts, most of our major projects have been completed. Our upgraded security system with motion activated cameras inside the Museum and outside the shed John Cecil should be completed this month. The construction of a concrete structure for the mid-1600s British Admiralty Cannon should be completed early next year. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a New Year that is happy, healthy and prosperous. On this Christmas day let's all say a prayer for our troops that can't be home with families and loved ones. They are doing a great job of preventing the spread of terrorism and protecting our freedoms. Please say a prayer for their safe return home. Another example of a mission ready ship because of a U.S. Navy Port Engineer USS Bainbridge Answers A Distress Call Story Number: NNS190613-19Release Date: 6/13/2019 8:53:00 PM By Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Jason Waite, USS Bainbridge (DDG 96) Public Affairs GULF OF OMAN (NNS) -- The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Bainbridge (DDG 96) responded to a distress call from the M/V Kokuka Courageous in the Gulf of Oman the morning of June 13. The Bainbridge received a call from the Kokuka Courageous crew advising that their ship was in distress approximately 30 nautical miles from Bainbridge’s location. All 21 crew members of the Kokuka Courageous had evacuated to a tug boat and were transferred to the Bainbridge. One of the Kokuka Courageous sailors suffered burns on his hands and was treated immediately by the Bainbridge medical team. Once safely aboard Bainbridge, the Kokuka Courageous crew received medical check-ups, showers and clean clothes along with food and any other attention they required. Bainbridge is underway as part of Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group's (ABECSG) deployment in support of maritime security cooperation efforts in U.S. 5th, 6th and 7th Fleet areas of operations. Color profile: Disabled Composite Default screen Appendix I A Chronological List of Cases Involving the Landing of United States Forces to Protect the Lives and Property of Nationals Abroad Prior to World War II* This Appendix contains a chronological list of pre-World War II cases in which the United States landed troops in foreign countries to pro- tect the lives and property of its nationals.1 Inclusion of a case does not nec- essarily imply that the exercise of forcible self-help was motivated solely, or even primarily, out of concern for US nationals.2 In many instances there is room for disagreement as to what motive predominated, but in all cases in- cluded herein the US forces involved afforded some measure of protection to US nationals or their property. The cases are listed according to the date of the first use of US forces. A case is included only where there was an actual physical landing to protect nationals who were the subject of, or were threatened by, immediate or po- tential danger. Thus, for example, cases involving the landing of troops to punish past transgressions, or for the ostensible purpose of protecting na- tionals at some remote time in the future, have been omitted. While an ef- fort to isolate individual fact situations has been made, there are a good number of situations involving multiple landings closely related in time or context which, for the sake of convenience, have been treated herein as sin- gle episodes. The list of cases is based primarily upon the sources cited following this paragraph. -

Norfolk’s Nauticus: USS Wisconsin BB‐64 The history of the U.S. Navy’s use of battleships is quite interesting. Some say the first battleship was the USS Monitor, used against the CSS Virginia (Monitor) in Hampton Roads in 1862. Others say it was the USS Michigan, commissioned in 1844. It was the first iron‐ hulled warship for the defense of Lake Erie. In any case, battleships, or as some have nicknamed them “Rolling Thunder,” have made the United States the ruler of the high seas for over one century. A history of those famous ships can be found in the source using the term bbhistory. By the way, BB‐64 stands for the category battleship and the number assigned. This photo program deals with the USS Wisconsin, which is moored in Norfolk and part of the Hampton Road Naval Museum and Nauticus. Though the ship has been decommissioned, it can be recalled into duty, if necessary. On July 6, 1939, the US Congress authorized the construction of the USS Wisconsin. It was built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Its keel was laid in 1941, launched in 1943 and commissioned on April 15, 1944. The USS Wisconsin displaces 52,000 tons at full load, length 880 fee, beam 108 feet and draft at 36 feet. The artillery includes 16‐inch guns that fire shells weighing one‐ton apiece. Other weapons include antiaircraft guns and later added on missile launchers. The ship can reach a speed of 30 nautical miles (knots) per hour or 34 miles mph. The USS Wisconsin’s first battle star came at Leyte Operation, Luzon attacks in the Pacific in December 1944. -

Our current agreement with the company runs until June 15, 2019 and covers the LIBERTY PRIDE, LIBERTY PROMISE, LIBERTY PASSION and LIBERTY PEACE. The parties tentatively agreed to a subsequent meeting at M.E.B.A. Headquarters on Monday, June 17. The M.E.B.A. negotiating team is led by Atlantic Coast V.P. Jason Callahan and included President Marshall Ainley, Secretary-Treasurer Bill Van Loo Contracts Rep. Mark Gallagher and M.E.B.A. in- house counsel Nils Djusberg. TWO MORE TANKER ATTACKS NEAR OMAN/IRAN Officials are investigating two more vessel attacks off the coast of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz after crews on a pair of tankers battled shipboard fires caused by “some sort of shell.” The KOKUKA COURAGEOUS, a Japanese-owned Panamanian-flagged chemical tanker carrying methanol, was reportedly attacked twice, three hours apart. -

Sundt, a Stoughton, Wisconsin native, discusses his career in the Navy spanning World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War. Sundt touches on enlisting, boot camp at Great Lakes (Illinois), radio school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and joining the Pacific Fleet in March of 1945. He relates duty as a radio operator aboard the USS Argonne (AG-31), being in Ulithi Atoll during the Battle of Okinawa, being in a “Recreation Island Working Party” on Enewetak Atoll, and patrolling the Leyte Gulf area for remaining Japanese troops. After entering the active Naval Reserves, he touches on using the GI Bill to finish undergraduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and a Master’s degree in education administration at the University of Colorado. Sundt mentions being recalled in 1947 to the Midshipman Training Squadron as the admiral’s tactical radio operator aboard the USS Wisconsin. He talks about his recall to active duty for the Korean War and receiving a direct commission to ensign. -

For nearly three years now, I’ve had the privilege to command the exceptional men and women of the United States European Command and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Allied Command Operations. As you know, it has been a busy year for these commands, for the NATO Alliance, and for our international and interagency partners who are such a vital part of our mission, our many initiatives, and our team. Working together, we have accomplished some important objectives since I saw you last: saving tens of thousands of lives from a despotic and unstable regime in Libya; supporting continued progress and transition in Afghanistan; maintaining a safe environment in the Balkans; sustaining vital relationships with our key allies and emerging partners in the region; and developing the necessary capabilities to meet the rising—and, in many cases, different—security challenges of the 21st century. I am happy to report that we continue to make sound and efficient progress, in concert with our allies and partners, toward ensuring continued security and stability across our theater and, in so doing, are providing for the forward defense of the United States. But before reporting our progress and achievements over the past year, I want to take a moment to examine a fundamental question on many minds here in Washington and abroad: How does the U.S. -
George Prince Kaumuali'i, the Forgotten Prince
DOUGLAS WARNE George Prince Kaumuali'i, the Forgotten Prince CATHERINE STAUDER provides considerable historical data on George Prince Kaumuali'i, the first born son of King Kaumuali'i, the last king to rule over the islands of Kaua'i and Ni'ihau.1 She discussed his military record and reached the conclusion that the royal prince and his missionary benefactors were less than honest in reporting his exploits in the U.S. Navy during the war of 1812. However, additional material gleaned from military and secular records indicates George Prince Kaumuali'i may not have been such a lying rascal after all. The purpose of this article is to revisit the period in question, and consider some other documentation which has come to light that indicates that the Prince probably was indeed wounded in combat during the war of 1812, but the particular sea battle cited in the religious press is in error. A brief chronology of George's activities based upon Stauder's arti- cle follows: Jan. 1804 to July 1805: George left the island of Kaua'i at the age of four aboard the Brig Hazard, an American trading vessel, under care of Captain James Rowan. His original Hawaiian name was Hume- hume, but his father, King Kaumuali'i, suggested he be called George (after King George of England) when he went abroad. The lad was sent off alone by his father to obtain an education in America. The ship sailed first to the Northwest Coast of America, then back across the Pacific to China, the Indian Ocean, around Africa arriving in Providence, Rhode Island eighteen months after leaving Kaua'i.
