Myanmar, a country with 49 % of the population accounted as poor, is currently facing a life-threatening natural disaster with floods and landslides affecting millions of people

The Current Situation Overview Since end-July 2015, the heavy and long rains of . 1.29 million acres of farmland have been flooded and contaminated. Huge parts of the country’s rice harvest and crops have been destroyed. This leads to a critical situation with lack of food right now, and has long-term impacts on food security and livelihoods. The water levels are slowly decreasing in some regions, but the threat still remains very high, as flood waters continue to move downstream, affecting other areas and the rainy season is still on-going. The number of people in need is expected to grow as more assessment results become available and more previously inaccessible areas are reached.

How We Help Flood Affected Areas

The immediate need of the affected people is urgent access to food, drinking water, critical health services, evacuation centres and temporary shelters. Child's Dream is preparing emergency and disaster relief funding, partnering with the local, community- based organisation NEED. Our emergency and disaster relief programme is focused on communities which have not yet received help from the government or any other NGO. Staff from NEED are very familiar with the rural areas in , one of the worst affected regions, in the west of Myanmar bordering .

Our Initial Help

Child’s Dream is releasing initial, urgent emergency funding of USD 30,000 and is planning for more, partnering with NEED.

An estimated 14,000 people across 15 villages have been identified by our local partner as in dire need. Although international aid has been deployed, NEED plans to distribute basic support such as food, medicine, water filters, school supplies, and financial aid to rebuild their homes.
