Christianity had a large part to play in medieval societies and was often the source of many conflicts, especially in the British Isles. The three novels covered in the essay take place during different periods of time in the medieval history of England, that is, the Arthurian period in The Winter King, the Viking invasions by the Pagan Danes in The Last Kingdom and the high-medieval period in Harlequin. The essay discusses both the historical background of each novel and how these novels depict the Church as it was during the period in question, as well as the Christian and non-Christian characters and religions in general. Furthermore, this essay discusses the troubling youth and life of Bernard Cornwell and how he has admitted to be prejudiced against all religions. Christianity is a religion which Cornwell treats with special contempt, especially when the faith is contrasted with the pagan or otherwise non-Christian faiths in his novels. The medieval Christians in these novels are extremely prejudiced towards their non-Christian counterparts, their adversaries in warfare, whether Christian or not, and even women, who are treated more badly than non-Christian women. These two visions have radically changed in Modern Literature and it is in Bernard Cornwell’s trilogy that these innovations are most obvious, as I intend to demonstrate in this paper. Introduction Whenever the word Arthuriana is mentioned, it conjures up a selec- tion of characters, mainly masculine, such as Arthur, Lancelot, Gawain, Merlin, Mordred or Uther Pendragon. However, the stories of Arthur and his men would not have developed were it not for the part women played: who bewitches Accolon in order to kill Arthur with his own sword? Who turns Sir Bercilak into a horrendous green giant? Who puts Merlin into a glass tower — or within a mountain, depending on the version — and keeps him there until the end of time? Who provokes, indirectly, the doom and fall of the Round Table? For better or for worse, the answer to these questions is a woman’s name. These characters have to atone in different ways. Morgan, Arthur’s half-sister and a horrible witch, is either killed or vanishes from the court. Guinevere becomes a nun in order to expiate her sins. Two more types of female characters can also be seen in Arthuriana. From this perspective, the main goal of this article is to identify expressions of memory about the history of England, by means of the concepts appro- priated mainly by Pierre Nora (1993), Maurice Halbwachs (2015), Michael Pollak (1992), and Jacques Le Goff (2013). Thus, we aim to emphasize in the narrative of Uhtred, the protagonist of the work, memories that bring new perspectives on the history of England in the 9th century. The adaptation was basically faithful to the novel but lost many of the connections to Sharpe's Siege as a result of an original story, Sharpe's Mission , being placed between the adaptations: Instead of the duel with Bampfylde, Sharpe fights a similar duel with Colonel Wigram, the officer who later commands his court martial, for insulting him at Toulouse and Lucille's brother is not Lassan but Maillot, the officer in charge of Napoleon's treasure with their mother omitted entirely. A good rattling yarn, as are most of the Sharpe novels, but this one marches to a slightly different beat and tone.
