CLASS NOTES Course XIV: Lojong, Developing the Good Heart Class One: Eight Verses of Diamond Lion, Part One LO JONG Means Developing the Good Heart LO JONG Mental Training,orDeveloping the Good Heart. Jong can mean “to mind training make pure,” as in jong-chub (Buddha); or to “practice something” like football. Developing a good heart suggests a kind of radical behavior modification. It is meant to be used at work, with your family and in your life all day long. It is a major change in how you relate with other people, and it’s much more difficult than Buddhist logic and philosophy. It’s like a feeling of being in an airplane with others and the plane is going to crash and you all know that you’re in it together. The people all around us are suffering and dying. You’re going to lose everyone you love and everything you ever worked for. You have to jong this feeling – to practice or develop the feeling all daylong of loving other people around you who are dying and losing all the good things they have. Yet we waste our time struggling to get things we want for ourselves that we will lose anyway. There is no point to this selfish approach you have to life. You have to change your heart. Why not be good to each other? It takes a lot of practice. -

The work begins by situating issues of shame and self-aversion sociologically, in order to understand how and why self-aversion became a significant topic of concern during the final quarter of the twentieth century. This discussion allows for a further investigation of shame as it has been addressed first by psychologists, for whom shame is often understood as a form of isolating self-aversion, and then by philosophers such as Bernard Williams and Emmanuel Levinas, for whom shame attunes the person to the moral expectations of a community, and therefore to ethical commands that arise from beyond the individual self. -

Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche Training in Tenderness Week One: “Accessing Our Innate Tender Heart” August 6, 2018 Good morning everybody. This video series is going to be on tsewa [tenderness of heart] and there will be four talks. This talk is about how we all have an innate tender heart and how we can access it. That tender heart is the source of all happiness in our human society. Even in the animal realm, animals are still joined together by their relations, by the structure of the animal family life. You can see this with elephants or any other species of animals. First, I wanted to give a little bit of background. All human beings wish to be happy and we are always trying to cultivate the means to be happy. We all wish to be free from suffering, and we are always trying to get rid of the conditions of suffering. That binds us all as one human race and makes our lives very much equal. In that sense, we all have a tenderness towards ourselves and our loved ones. There is a sense of something underneath or beyond all of the external conditions of who we are and how we are brought up—what culture we belong to, what race we are, whether we have the means of happiness and wealth, or any other status. Inside we are identical, and when we not only believe that but really feel it in our heart towards other living beings, that opens up our heart to others. However, there isn't always an aspiration in one's own mind to be happy and to cultivate the conditions of happiness. -

In preparing for the retreat, the three of us decided it would be helpful if the lojong slogans were presented from various perspectives by drawing upon different commentarial sources. We chose four sources that we felt were both excellent in themselves and also provided a diverse perspective. We pulled all of these together into one place to facilitate our own study. When we saw what a great resource this created, we decided to share this with everyone doing the retreat. We then added some additional materials specifically geared towards the participants – such as practice instructions – and packaged everything into this sourcebook. During the retreat we will cover one point and a selection of its slogans each day. Please read some or all of the readings on the day’s topic and slogans in this sourcebook. There will be a half hour reading period each day in the shrine room dedicated to this purpose. In addition, of course, you are welcome to use the open periods after meals and nighttime for reading as well. The commentaries on the Lojong points and slogans were chosen because they lent the following qualities: The commentaries by Pema Chodron (Start Where You Are) and Norman Fischer (Training in Compassion) are the most accessible; Traleg Rinpoche’s commentary (The Practice of Lojong) is the most traditional; And Chogyam Trungpa, Rinpoche’s version (Training the Mind) represents the middle of the road. -

Biography of Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche
Dharma Dhrishti — Spring 2009 Biography of Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche .E. Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche was born in 1964 in Northern India as the son of the 3rd Neten Chokling Rinpoche, recognized as the emanation of Jamgon H Kongtrul Lodro Thaye, the great master and scholar who was very active in establishing the Rime movement. From early age, Rinpoche studied with his root guru H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Rinpoche was trained in the Longchen Nyingthig lineage as well as in the threefold lineage of Khyen Kong Chok sum (the lineages of Jamgon Kongtrul, Khyentse Wangpo and Chokgyur Lingpa). Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche also studied extensively under Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche and the great scholar Khenpo Rinchen. In the year 1989, H.E. Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche moved to the United States with his family and in 1990 he began a five‐year tenure as a professor of Buddhist philosophy at Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado. In the United States Rinpoche established the Mangala Shri Bhuti organization dedicated to further the practice of the Longchen Nyingthig and Khyen Kong Chok sum lineages. Rinpoche also established a mountain retreat center Longchen Jigme Samten Ling in Southern Colorado, where he spends much of his time in retreat. When not in retreat, Rinpoche travels widely throughout the world teaching and leading retreats. Rinpoche currently presides and oversees the activities of Mangala Shri Bhutiʹs three practice and study centres (Phuntsok Choling in Boulder, Colorado, Pema Osel Do Ngak Choling in Vershire, Vermont, and the Guna Institute in Bir, India), and two retreat centres (Longchen Jigme Samten Ling in Creston Colorado and Guna Norling in Salvador da Bahia in Brazil). -

These methods are no si- necure as the ego cherishing part of our minds is confronted straight out. From this it may be clear that these teachings are aimed at the Mahayana practitioner. Even though these teachings stem from the eleventh century, they still totally apply to our pre- sent-day situation and can be applied very well in our present-day lives. The first text from which is taught is Langri Tangpa's Training of the Mind in Eight Stanzas. These beautiful verses reveal profound yet very practical methods to the development of a real altruistic mind. -

Belongingness—Finding Refuge Handout and Reflection How can we take refuge and find a sense of complete and never-failing security and com- fort? For most people with trauma and attachment issues they’ve never had this sense of “never-failing security and comfort.” Part of the task of the Becoming Safely Embodied skills are to develop this felt sense of inner safety that allows us safe haven over the course of your life, through the ups and downs, giving us a way to put all things in perspective. To do this, though, we need to know our motivations for embarking on this journey and we need to know where we belong. In Buddhism we talk about “finding refuge in the Three Jewels:” in the Buddha (the teach- er who reached states of enlightenment), in the Dharma (teachings), and in the Sangha (community). The Buddhist teacher, Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche tells us that “having the three jewels constantly with us in our mind means the mind is always at peace.” For our explora- tion in the BSE Course I will be using this as a template. Exemplars Who is a model of being that you trust? It could be a spiritual person, it could be a family member, it could be someone who holds the qualities of being in which you can feel safe. We call people like this “Exemplars.” They embody qualities and ways of being that pull forth those qualities out of you.
