Izzy Sivam—Superstar Fundraiser!

Y ear 8 student, Izzy Sivam, runs a sweet treats fundraising stall on the Bissoe Cycle Trail. The amazing sweet cart you will find between Bissoe and Devoran was made by a friend of Izzy’s family for his recent wedding day and then kindly donated to Izzy and her brother William for their fundraising ventures. With their garden almost attached to the cycle trail, the Sivams spotted a superb opportunity for fundraising.

Izzy’s choice of products, beautiful display, cookery skills and dedication to raising money for others has resulted in over £500 profit since the Mother’s Day weekend. Izzy’s chosen charity this year is Lander4Uganda and we are extremely grateful for all her hard work. Your donation will be very carefully spent. Previous beneficiaries of William and Izzy’s remarkable business acumen have include our Area Resource Base (The Ark) where William’s donation helped to send our students on an outdoor adventure trip to the Calvert Trust on Exmoor.

These really are 2 very remarkable and inspirational students and we can personally vouch for the quality of their homemade baked goodies so please support them if you find yourself on the Coast to Coast Cycle trail. The stall is very close to Bissoe bridge and runs 7 days a week.

Exeter University Law Event

O n Wednesday 3rd April, some of our year 9 Gifted and Talented students attended a half-day law event held at Exeter University, Penryn Campus.

It was a great opportunity for students to learn about the rule of law, develop public speaking skills and learn how to structure a clear argument. They spent the session working alongside two practicing barristers, to learn about key aspects of criminal advocacy and hear what really happens in a courtroom.

Students were given a masterclass on opening and closing speeches, examination in chief and cross- examination and the opportunity to put these skills learnt into practice in a mock trial at the end of the workshop.

Each and every one of them did a fantastic job in the roles they took on, received very promising feedback on their performances and asked some brilliant questions to the barristers at the end.

Miss Squires. Teacher of RE and PD.

Putting our grave concerns about Climate Change to Sarah Newton MP

T he picture above shows our staff room packed with students who gave up their lunch hour to put their questions and concerns on climate change to our local MP Mrs Sarah Newton during the first week of term.

Students were solemn, serious and extremely concerned about the state our planet is in and that not enough is being done to prevent disaster. After an impassioned and very well informed speech from Emily, topics for questions included fracking, transportation, how carbon emissions are calculated and what is omitted from these calculations, the food industry, public transport and pollution.. the meeting overran and Mrs Newton has kindly offered to come back to finish the discussion.

Sarah Newton wanted students to know that she doesn’t see the future as being rosy but she does believe there is hope. She also emphasised that a report from the Committee on Climate Change was coming out on 2nd May which would provide new advice to the government on revised targets. Following this report some targets were revised.

Well done to all the students who attended and expressed their concerns so articulately and precisely .

Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge for Lander4Uganda

D uring the bank holiday weekend, 35 staff and their families and friends took part in the Welsh 3 Peaks challenge. For most this involved climbing Pen Y Fan, in the Brecon Beacons after a 6 hour drive from Cornwall and then driving straight to Cadair Idris in Snowdonia National Park, to complete that in the same day. This meant descending in the dark, with head torches and a very late night! The following day participants climbed Snowden to complete the trio.

All agreed the challenge was a exhilarating, eye popping, memorable and empowering experience with some staff describing it as one of the hardest things they have ever done!

It’s not too late to donate and every penny raised will be used to fund the vital work that the Lander4Uganda 2019 team will do in Uganda in July. https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ lander4uganda3peaks
