What Was Happening While I Was a Student At Watterson?

Historical events between 1966 and 1970 set the tone and established cultural parameters for our tenure at Bishop Watterson High School. The following is a list of historical events which occurred while we were in high school. They have been categorized into freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior years. Events emphasized are those in which classmates have expressed a particular interest. For example, Chris Bush had a passion for the Monkeys, so events related to the Monkeys are included. Greg Buchwalter had a passion for flight and space, so those events are listed. There was an article in the Eagleview about a priest who loved to discuss Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in his religion class. Thus, all historical events concerning have been included. However, I made sure not to include anything about Frank Zappa. So, if your interest is not included in this list, it simply means, you didn’t hang out with me.

The Questionnaire

In order to get a profile of the Watterson Class of 1970 a questionnaire was designed by Steve Marson and Cathi Coridan. A field test was conducted and appropriate changes were made. The questionnaire was made available on March 6, 2015 and was closed June 15, 2015. Classmates were selected through Pat Kane’s Watterson Facebook page, Pat Kane’s list of email addresses and Classmates® (an Internet service). A total of 55 classmates completed the questionnaire. The table below illustrates the response patterns.

The data collection process fails to comply with the minimum social science standards of data acquisition. Thus, this report is NOT scientifically valid. The reader cannot draw inferences about Watterson or even the class of 70. However, you can have a lot of fun reading it. The rest of the paper is organized around the items from the questionnaire. Each item on the questionnaire is addressed in the order the item was presented.

Names

A default was not set to require classmates to include their names. The first item ask the classmate to insert “your name while attending” BWHS. Of the total of 55 classmates, 39 included their names while 16 did not. The next item asked for “your current name” with 32 electing to respond while 23 did not. Aliases were used. For example, “Electricity” was used as a current name. Then, of course, someone indicated that his name was “Patrick Kane.” Obviously, this isn’t a real person’s name.

Sex

The class of 70 had approximately 231 graduates. Of these 231, 124 were females while 107 were males. Thus, there were slightly more females in the graduating class. In responding

18 to the questionnaire, as illustrated in the next table, females were more likely to respond than males. Of the 55 classmates who completed the questionnaire, all respond to this item.

There is peculiarity surrounding this response rate. There are more males on Facebook and on Classmates® then females. One would expect more males to respond than females. One can only infer that males were reluctant to complete the questionnaire because they did more embarrassing things in high school than their female counterparts.

Current Resident

Of the 54 respondents, 39 have elected to remain in the Buckeye State. Obviously, the remaining 15 were forced out the state. For example, John Stock was forced to move to California because of the pants he had worn to the senior prom (see photo on the right; notice striped, bellbottom pants). When Cathi Coridan left the Buckeye State, she took her gloves with her. Of the 15 classmates who were forced out the state, three refused to identify their location. Clearly these three graduates are facing even greater embarrassment than even John Stock. However, some admitted their current locations. They include: Arizona, California, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The problem of not having a scientific protocol for extracting data is best illustrated in the next table.

0 Married Widowed Divorced Living in Sin Never Married

In comparison to national statistics, the class of 70 has an extremely low divorce and living in sin rate. Because we have not used a scientifically approved data collection protocol we cannot draw an adequate inference. BUT, according to the Baltimore Catechism (see on right), “living in sin” constitutes living in a household with another and participating in coitus without the benefit or liability of marriage. As a result, the 70.91% of the married classmates have requested that the 5.45% of those “living in sin” send photos. On the original questionnaire, this item included the options of “separated “and “a domestic partnership or civil union.” No one among our classmates indicate they belonged to these categories.

Marrying a Classmate

The dimension of great interest to sociology is the proportion of our classmates that married their high school sweetheart. Five or 9.26% students married classmates. They have an extraordinary low divorce rate. Values shared within a marital bond create stability.

Religious Affiliation

Did our Catholic education have an impact on our religious affiliation? Apparently, our teachers and parents had a significant influence on the class of 70. Nearly 80% (78.26% to be exact) have remained Catholic. No classmates converted to Judaism or Buddhism. However, 8.7% of our class became Protestants. Those who selected Protestant as an option listed the religious affiliation as:

 Church of Christ  Unitarian-Universalist  non-denominational  Christian  Spiritual but not Religious  Lutheran  None (not nun)

Among the class, 6.52% defined themselves as Agnostic while 4.36% are Atheists. Regardless of being an Agnostic or Atheist, no one “Disagreed” or “Strongly Disagreed” with the statement, “I feel that Catholic values have made me a good person.” This outcome is quite striking. It suggests that even if one totally rejects the teaching within Catholicism, one will continue to embrace Catholic moral values. Only 9.09% stated they were not sure, which is about the proportion of Agnostics or Atheists (10.87%). See the table below:

23

Regrets about Attending Watterson

Three questionnaire items addressed the issue of regrets about attending Watterson. These items include:  I have fond memories of my experience at BWHS  If I had my choice and could redo my high school years, I would want to attend BWHS.  I believe I received a better education than I would have if I attended public school The following three tables are self-explanatory and suggest that few classmates have regrets.

24

When the last three items are taken in concert with each other, the class of 70 has extraordinary positive attitudes toward Bishop Watterson High School.

The Uniforms

Throughout the responses within the questionnaire, sex of the classmate has had no influence on how the question was answered. In other words, males and female demonstrate a shared pattern when responding to the items – until item 16 on the questionnaire.

Within item 16, male classmates envision the uniform much differently than females. The Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U test indicated a significant difference with a p value of less than

25

.0001. In non-statistical terms, the analysis demonstrates a very strong difference in the how males/females see the uniform. In words of Mary M. McEwan Schneider on Facebook:

I found that question interesting as well… Let's face it… teenage boys think everything from eating a hotdog to uniforms is sexually provocative! To this day Dan has some hilarious sexually oriented comments that still make me shake my head! You men never stop thinking about it!

In addition, John Bixler offered a profound philosophical insight regarding the uniforms that continues to resonate 45 years later. While John was walking down a Watterson hallway with Michael Hummel and me, he gazed upon three girls (Kathleen Brennan, Donna Napolitano and Hildegard Freeman) walking toward us on the opposite side of the hallway. He murmured,

Have you ever noticed that every time you see a girl in a Watterson uniform – you immediately realize that – that – that, her legs go all the way up.

Michael and I nodded in solemn agreement and in unison replied, “Indeed.” Because of its colors and style, the Watterson uniform has gained international attention. Dan Brown, the author of The DaVinci Code, originally wanted his book and movie to end at Bishop Watterson High School. Cost overruns prevented the move to Columbus.

As noted earlier, Brown’s interest in the uniform emerged from the color and the V-shaped top [see the V in the photo above]. The V is the ancient symbol for femininity and more importantly the Holy Grail. Audrey Tautou, who played the role of Sophie Neveu, was supposed to be wearing the Watterson uniform at the end of the film. To commemorate Brown’s visit to Watterson, a uniformed student held up a signs stating “WE ARE THE HOLY GRAIL.” Because of being disappointed with the last minute and unexpected change, “THE HOLY GRAIL” was cropped off of the picture.

26

Because of their shortened hemline, the data from item 15 indicates that 43% of female students found themselves in trouble or humiliated. Clearly the alternations made by the 43% were an exercise of futility. One cannot alter the uniform to be more sexually provocative than it already is.

One other element is noteworthy. According to the questionnaire, at least one male wore the Watterson uniform. On Facebook, Beverly Burke writes,

Please, guys who wore the uniform?! Identify and IF possible post photo of self IN THE UNIFORM. LOL.

I could break the code and identify the individual. However, ethics prevent me from doing so. Perhaps a closely related question is hatred of PE. If one examines the overall responses, we will see a flat response from Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree.

Female Male Both

As soon as we separate sexes, it is clear that males liked PE and females did not. The question becomes, “did female students hate PE because of the uniform they had to wear?” The undisputed fact is: even male students saw the girls PE uniforms as sexually unflattering and somewhat of an embarrassment. Here lies a question for the 50th reunion: Did the girls hate PE because of the uniform they were required to wear? An event regarding the hideous appearance of the girls’ gym uniform has moved from mere Watterson folklore to an empirical fact. As reported by Julie Van Doornevelt, during a girls’ gym class, Watterson had a fire drill. This was the first time the boys of Watterson had an

27 opportunity to see the girls in their gym attire. However, we knew not to look – except for Chris Beale who got a quick glimpse of the gym uniform that Joyce Girlando and Molly Wilson were wearing. He immediately went into shock and passed out, but not before screaming:

THIS IS NOT THE HOLY GRAIL!!!

Greg Gassin and Frank Rabe ran to Chris’ rescue. Frank ordered Greg to get water as he administered CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) on Chris. When Chris returned to consciousness, Greg had the water ready to give to Chris and Frank gently assisted Chris in drinking the water. In a scolding voice, Frank Rabe was quoted as yelling:

You should know better!! Don’t you know that you’re never supposed to look at the girls’ gym uniform directly!? Hereafter, if you need to look, use this mirror. Never look directly at the girls’ gym uniform.

Because of this significant historical event, several actions altered the lives of many:

 Frank Rabe decided to become a medical doctor.  Joyce Girlando interpreted Chris’ reaction in a very personal way. Greg Gassin spent a great deal of time comforting her. This event was the catalyst for their marriage.  Molly Wilson took the event less personally, but thought it would be best to change her name from Molly to Mary.  Chris Beale has never quite recovered from the trauma.  Chris’ parents sued Watterson. The out of court settlement mandated that Watterson no longer require this particular girls’ gym uniform. If it were not for the law suit, the girls of Watterson would still be wearing this gym uniform.  Because Chris’ trauma was so profound, he is not able to remember the event; the others involved (Julie Van Doornevelt, Joyce Girlando, Molly Wilson, Frank Rabe and Greg Gassin) were sworn to secrecy. If they reveal these events, the court has ordered that they must wear the girls’ uniform for a week.

Many readers of this document are likely to disbelieve this incredible story. However, there is a way of verifying the truth of this story. Merely ask one of the people involved and, as the court has ordered, they will deny that the event occurred. Although absent from the fire drill because of a field trip, Mary Jo Sergi was the only student who knew the secret of the girl’s gym uniform. It had a Medusa-like effect on males. Mary Jo uncovered that Bishop Watterson placed a curse on the uniform -- to make males sick if they looked. She immediately recognized Chris’ symptoms and wept for him in isolation her entire senior year. Upon graduating, she fled Columbus only to return 45 years later when she learned Watterson discontinued using the cursed uniform. Medusa

When We Weren’t Studying Activities at BWHS Sports

Three items of the questionnaire addressed attending games. They included: - I regularly attended football games. - I regularly attended basketball games. - I regularly attended baseball games. The data on attending football, basketball and baseball games demonstrates statistically significant differences in attitudes towards these sports. With no doubt, Watterson is a football school with basketball a distant second. One could infer that some of our classmates didn’t know that Watterson had a baseball team. The items can be combined into one table. Pat Kane Loves Baseball

I had a psychology professor once report that baseball includes 15 minutes of action packed into 2 hours of the game. This is an exaggeration. A Wall Street Journal study reports that the

29 average baseball game includes 5:47 minutes of action. The class of 70 agrees with the WSJ findings. Proms were a time that students could put on a tie or white gloves and attempt to act sophisticated. More students attended the senior prom than the junior prom. Clearly going to the prom during the senior year had a higher priority.

THE GOOD1 THE BAD THE UGLY

This section of the report represents good and bad things the class of 70 experienced.

During our senior year in December of 1969, the entire class of 70 was invited to appear on Channel 4’s Dance Party. Within the context of this historical point in time, such an event was a very big deal. The class of 70 had an opportunity to have its 15 minutes of fame. Unfortunately, Channel 4 did not retain this program in their archives. The only evidence we have for the event is our memory and a poor audio recording of the TV show. You can download the CD at http://www.watterson70.com/ Although the event gained a great deal of notoriety at the time, as illustrated in the table below, few classmates have vivid memories of it.

My friends (God love 'em) were screaming Proud Mary AND Green River...so...I of course answered "Green Mary". The horrors!!! In the end I beat Richie Brooks and won an album by Crosby, Stills and Nash! YAY ME!!! .....memories, like the corner of my mind.....

If Watterson sponsored a yearbook, the class of 70 would have had a better memory of this event. The talent show during our junior year was a significant event. Sadly, because Watterson did not have a yearbook, we can only rely on our 45 year old memory.

Classm ates were asked for their best and worst memories. These responses are difficult to summarize in a chart. However, they are listed in pairs below. Thus, you will be able to read everyone’s best memory immediately followed by their worst memory. Everyone had a BEST memory while three students could not list a WORST memory. Some noteworthy responses include a female student who reported that her best AND worst memory was “being in love”; while a male student reported that his best AND worst memory was “my girlfriend.” I cannot report who made these comments, but it would be interesting to learn it they dated each other. The sad commentary is a pattern found in the worst category. Bullying was the most common worst memory reported.

Classmates were asked for the memory of the best BWHS hang out. The first place winner was Jerry’s Drive-In; follow by a close second Sandy’s Hamburgers.

One of the most remarkable finding is that 70.21% of the class of 70 have remained in contact with their high school classmates.

The last item on the questionnaire asked classmates to offer comments. Follow is an unedited list of what we wrote:

Great classmates -- great teachers -- still to this day !

Yes. I strongly believe the Catholic school system is the biggest reason the Catholic European immigrants to the US were successful in the US. Certainly, Worthington & UA schools are academically equal to BWHS, but I do not believe the group support system-teacher wise & class mate wise-inherent in the Catholic system can be matched. I found our BWHS Class to be very kind and inclusive; we went to the 20th reunion -that reaffirmed this belief-the kids had turned into kind and thoughtful adults. Most of the pairings in HS at BW resulted in long term marriages. Our children also spent some time in Catholic schools. This further strengthened my belief in Catholic education. There is a reason Catholic schools win more than their share of sports' titles across the USA-the kids do what they are told to do with a strong bond with their team mates with better coaches that sacrifice salary amounts that public schools would pay to work with better kids. Though I did not marry my HS girlfriend, I did marry a Catholic girl from NJ (like me) whose best friend in NJ married a fellow student from the All Boy Catholic Prep school I attended in Jersey.

Thanks to all who are so committed to putting together the class info and the reunion details. It must be so challenging to put so much time into this and, tho I'm unable to attend most reunions, it is so rewarding to keep up with the lives of those who were an important part of our youth and our collective memories. A heartfelt thank you!

I wish that I had lived in Clintonville when I attended BWHS and not 10 miles away.

Have a great reunion!!!

It bothers me that I have taught in a BWHS feeder school for over 35 years, yet no one has made any effort to send me info regarding a reunion until this summer when I ran into a fellow graduate at my place of employment. after reflecting, what made Watterson so special is that the in crowd was the star athletes/scholars, and then the fringe was the scholars who didn't play athletics I pity the schools that the in crowd is the athletes/no brains.

Fondness achievement was making the 69 football team. Was a senior, and I worked my butt off that summer by running, running, studying, running. Wanted to be in the best shape possible, it paid off. Started on the offensive line with some good talent and team mates. Silly achievement, but I remember it to this day.

I want to attend the next reunion.

I have enjoyed staying in touch with so many classmates- it is even more fun the longer we are out of school. I would encourage supporting the alumni fundraising efforts and paying it forward for future generations.

Good idea to have a questionnaire.

Thanks to the planning committee for organizing this year's reunion! It will be a blast to see everyone again.

What does one get for the $70/couple at a Pizza Parlor in Canal at this years reunion?

The Facebook page is a good idea.

"It was the best of times...it was the worst of times..." How the hell did we grow this old???

Thanks for creating the survey, Doc!

AND then there were ALL the times when several of us performed numerous pranks stuffed in (you guessed it) Mary Pat's car. I remember sitting in the backseat and literally holding the door closed with a rope. It stretched to the other passenger door and we all held it shut. Those corners were tough! We had no concept of seat belts but were pretty well protected by all the toilet paper stuffed around us. YAY US!!!! Thanks for the walk down Memory Lane, Steve!

Sadly, my high school memories were based on friendships and heartaches Wish I could go back and concentrate on academics! Could have done so much better! My parents were into my social

38 life! So was I! Would change everything if I could! Loved my friends, especially the ones I have today, and the ones that are coming back to me after all these years!??

I wish I could look back on my high school years and say "yeah, that was a blast!". Not that I didn't enjoy any of my time at BWHS, but I don't look back on that time with fondness, more like "I'm glad it's behind me."

Actually wouldn't change a thing other than maybe not being so shy around all the girls ~ :(

Question #4 not fair, no one else (from Watterson) lives in Readfield Maine! My affiliation remains Catholic- but my personal beliefs are not entirely in alignment with Church doctrine. My God loves with no bias toward anyone and never confuses politics with faith. I'm hopeful the Church will share this sentiment one day. hope we have a good turnout for this year's reunion.

Why didn't I know how many female classmates had the hots for me.

Hope you get a great response, should be interesting to read. Thanks to Steve and Cathi for your efforts.

It's nice to see old friends/classmates from grade school and high school on Facebook. Even though I don’t have a lot of fond memories it's good to see how people are doing, and very sad when we lose one if our classmates. I have come a long way since high school. I have a great husband (married 43 years this coming August), 3 awesome kids and their spouses, and 6 of the greatest grandkids ever born!!! I would say I have done well!! Plus I am retired from Ohio State Medical Center after 24.5 years of service and loving retirement!!

I miss Mary Pat Kington Gregory.

Thanks, Steve for creating the survey! Can't wait to see everyone at the reunion!

I am so very happy that Pat Kane developed the class of 70 Facebook page

Watterson did not have a year book. This is sad because such a book would jog our memories. Many life course changing events happened at Watterson. As we age, we forget these important events. A yearbook would have preserved our collective memory and prevent people like me from lying about what actually happened.

The End
